In ancient Greece, the scent of perfume was thought to signal the presence of a god. Breeze of the Gods starts its exploration of perfume in ancient Greece in the realm of these gods, searching for the mythological origins of perfume in the nebulous and complex interaction of gods and men. From there, the exploration follows perfumes development in the secular world, examining ingredients, production techniques, trade relationships, and pottery.
The perfumes of ancient Greece held a resemblance, at least in ingredients, to what we would recognize as perfume today. Lilies, bergamot, thyme, saffron, and dozens of other substances played a role in perfume. In Greece, spices were more sought after for perfume than flowers, but both played significant roles in developing the scents of the time. Like today, a waft of perfume was not as simple as it seemed and carried with it complicated implications of wealth, social status, and social philosophy. The wealthy embraced perfume and the poor sought out cheaper forms to emulate the rich, causing a race to find more exotic ingredients that could be used to distinguish one's social standing from other perfume users.
The great thinkers of the time declared war on the substances, from Solon's legal reforms that made the production of perfume illegal to Socrates who contended that the odor of exercise was the proper emblem of a free man. Breeze of the Gods explores these olfactory aspects of ancient Greece and allows us to explore history with our sense of smell.

Описание: From the New York Times bestselling author of Beach Blues comes a novel of summers you never forget and friendships that never fade. After a heartbreaking summer on the Connecticut shore, a group of beach friends is as adrift as an unmoored rowboat. When a dismayed Jason Barlow drives as far away from the sea as he can, leaving behind his wife, Maris, as well as their stately cottage on the bluff, that news hits like a sudden wave. Gathering over an intimate meal in a coastal diner, the friends make a solemn pact to lean on each other and not make any more rash decisions. Which is all well and good, until each friend wavers--testing relationships, commitments, and especially love in the little beach community of Stony Point. But can the magic of the weathered boardwalk, whispering lagoon grasses, and sweet salt air cure what ails them? Like a swaying seashell wind chime, Beach Breeze is a book that leaves echoes of summer's sweetness and sadness, long after the last page is turned.
The Victorian soldier-artist, Henry Edward Baines, has left us a unique legacy of his time in North America -- his lively and descriptive journal of a pleasure cruise around Lake Ontario in the summer of 1863, illustrated with dozens of vibrant watercolour paintings and simple pen-and-ink sketches.
THE CRUISE OF THE BREEZE is an annotated version of Henry's journal reproduced in its entirety, together with the story of his early life, a discussion of his artwork, and the details of the events leading to his tragic death in 1866 in the Great Fire of Quebec, all set in the context of the British Empire of the mid-19th Century.
War between the United States of America and Great Britain seemed imminent in December, 1861, when the young Royal Artillery officer, Lieutenant Henry Baines, was dispatched to Canada along with thousands of other British troops. While war was averted, Henry remained on duty in Canada for the next five years.
In August, 1863, while stationed at Toronto, Henry joined several friends aboard the private yacht, Breeze, for a cruise around Lake Ontario. The illustrated journal that Henry kept includes his entertaining views on colonial Canada, comments on events of the American Civil War and encounters with the U.S. Army, as well as many other adventures he had and people he met at places like Cobourg, Prince Edward County and Kingston on the Canadian side of the lake, and at Sackets Harbor, Oswego and Rochester on the American side.
THE CRUISE OF THE BREEZE brings a unique perspective to a fascinating and turbulent period of Canadian and American history, and gives us a glimpse into the life and times of this remarkable Victorian soldier, artist, yachtsman and hero.
