SELF-HELP / SPIRITUALITY "Unmasking the ego is the first giant step into the spiritual world, and Dr. Mutchler's contribution to the literature makes that step much easier." Foreword Clarion Review Rating: 5 stars (out of 5) We live in a marketplace filled with valuable ideas for how to be happy and find peace of mind, yet people continue to suffer--perhaps today more than ever before. We are just now awakening to the principal source of our unhappiness, which is ego. Ego wreaks havoc in our daily lives, from the emotional pain that individuals, couples, and families experience all the way up to global tensions and international conflict. Most people think of ego as an inflated sense of self-importance, but this is only a fraction of what it really is. Ego is the false identification of who we are as beings. It drives us to think and behave in ways that are inconsistent and incongruent with who we really are, leading always to dissatisfaction and suffering. The secret is to loosen ourselves from ego's painful grip by embracing it, not by trying to conquer or overcome it. As counter-intuitive as embracing ego may sound, the truth is that ego is the only doorway through which one can reach the world of spirit--where peace of mind awaits us. Without proper guidance, this trip can be perilous, because ego--to ensure its own survival--makes every attempt to derail us along the way. Embracing Ego is an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to help you make this journey as smoothly as possible. The seeds of happiness will take root at the outset of your journey and continue to grow every step of your way.
Under This Beautiful Dome tells the true story of journalist Terry Mutchler's secret five-year relationship with Penny Severns, an Illinois State Senator who mentored Barack Obama. Forced to engage in an elaborate ruse to keep their relationship a secret, the two women constantly fear discovery in their conservative town. Denied legal access to the altar, they face even greater hardships when Penny is diagnosed with cancer and begins undergoing treatment.
Set in the political arena, Under This Beautiful Dome reminds us why the march to legalize same-sex marriage is both personal and political. This vivid, beautiful story paints an intimate portrait of a loving relationship and the vast impact gay marriage legislation has on couples and families in America today. An essential look at how our laws affect our lives, Mutchler's memoir is a must-read for those interested in politics, equality, and the changes sweeping the nation

David Mutchler earned a bachelor's degree in education, master's degrees in philosophy and social work, and a doctorate in psychology, followed by advanced studies in religion. He has taught at the secondary, university, and business executive levels, with Honors in each. In addition, he spent several years working in the field of mental health.
Though raised as a mainstream Christian, David long felt that there were deeper messages in the Bible than is customarily thought to be the case. At the top of his list was the usual interpretation of the original sin, which the vast majority of Christians see as disobedience--that at the serpent's enticement, Adam and Eve ate the fruit that God had forbidden. And by doing so, they, and all of humankind, were cast into a state of sin.
In David's view, what this interpretation fails to acknowledge--and therefore fails to understand--is the significance of what the tree that bore the fruit represents and why it was forbidden. The banned fruit was from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and by eating the fruit, First Man and First Woman gained the knowledge that good and evil exist.
From there, it is a short jump to see that--gaining the knowledge that good and evil exist--is to think that we have the right to sit in judgment of ourselves, other people, groups, ideas, and situations. The truth is, judgment is the source of most dissatisfaction and suffering. Hence, judgmentalism is the actual original sin, not disobedience, and the real turmoil and pain which we fell into was a world filled with judgment.
This gives us a vastly different interpretation of the meaning of salvation. It means that to save ourselves--and the world--from suffering, we must reverse our predisposition to judge. "Judgment Day Is Not Coming: Are You Ready?" is a reader-friendly process for how to rid ourselves of judgment, and thereby to create more happiness and well-being in our own lives, which collectively means more happiness and well-being in the world.
