Описание:

Two teens meet after tragedy and learn about love, loss, and letting go

Naima Rodriguez doesnt want your patronizing sympathy as she grieves her father, her hero--a fallen Marine. Shell hate you forever if you ask her to open up and remember him as he was, though thats all her loving family wants her to do in order to manage her complex OCD and GAD. Shed rather everyone back the-eff off while she separates her Lucky Charms marshmallows into six, always six, Ziploc bags, while she avoids friends and people and living the life her father so desperately wanted for her.

Dew respectfully requests a little more time to process the sudden loss of his parents. Its causing an avalanche of secret anxieties, so he counts on his trusty voice recorder to convey the things he cant otherwise say aloud. He could really use a friend to navigate a life swimming with pain and loss and all the lovely moments in between. And then he meets Naima and everythings changed--just not in the way he, or she, expects.

Candace Gangers Six Goodbyes We Never Said is no love story. If you ask Naima, its not even a like story. But it is a story about love and fear and how sometimes you need a little help to be brave enough to say goodbye.

Описание: This book is the story of the reality of New York street gang in the late 90s to present. It is about the violence, the passion, the despair, the pain, the loyalty, and the disloyalty. It is the true story of the destruction of families caused by violence, incarceration and racism. It is about murder, rape, betrayal, and the injustice of the justice system. This is a society that fails to protect, defend, educate, rehabilitate, and inspire young people to succeed and families to grow and flourish. It's the Bronx and rawness of the ghetto. It's the true life story of actual individuals with their identities masked to protect them from further harm. Blacks, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Latin Americans, Muslims, Israelites, and the police are all engaged in a battle to dominate and to survive. The backdrop is the Bronx, the inner city and one of poorest congressional districts in the United States. It is about a failing school system, the question of race, the history of conflict, and the brainwashing of a society to ignore the truth and keep living a lie. The games they play out in the street pit females against females, and the cost is not being able to trust anyone or anything. Ask yourself the question, Could you survive this world? Can anyone survive this world? This is the world that some people live in, some people fear, and some people have never heard of. It is also the world that those in power don't want you to know about so that they can continue to profit off the misery and suffering of people fighting, trying, and doing their best to keep each other down. They're down lower than you can ever imagine or believe someone can go.

Описание:  Honorable Mention, 2018 Distinguished Book Award presented by the American Sociological Association’s Sociology of Sexualities Section The first inside look at gay gang members. Many people believe that gangs are made up of violent thugs who are in and out of jail, and who are hyper-masculine and heterosexual. In The Gang’s All Queer, Vanessa Panfil introduces us to a different world. Meet gay gang members – sometimes referred to in popular culture as “homo thugs” – whose gay identity complicates criminology’s portrayal and representation of gangs, gang members, and gang life.  In vivid detail, Panfil provides an in-depth understanding of how gay gang members construct and negotiate both masculine and gay identities through crime and gang membership.   The Gang’s All Queer draws from interviews with over 50 gay gang- and crime-involved young men in Columbus, Ohio, the majority of whom are men of color in their late teens and early twenties, as well as on-the-ground ethnographic fieldwork with men who are in gay, hybrid, and straight gangs. Panfil provides an eye-opening portrait of how even members of straight gangs are connected to a same-sex oriented underground world.   Most of these young men still present a traditionally masculine persona and voice deeply-held affection for their fellow gang members.  They also fight with their enemies, many of whom are in rival gay gangs. Most come from impoverished, ‘rough’ neighborhoods, and seek to defy negative stereotypes of gay and Black men as deadbeats, though sometimes through illegal activity. Some are still closeted to their fellow gang members and families, yet others fight to defend members of the gay community, even those who they deem to be “fags,” despite distaste for these flamboyant members of the community. And some perform in drag shows or sell sex to survive.   The Gang’s All Queer poignantly illustrates how these men both respond to and resist societal marginalization. Timely, powerful, and engaging, this book will challenge us to think differently about gangs, gay men, and urban life.

Winner, 2014 Distinguished Contribution to Research Award presented by the Latina/o Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association

Los Angeles is the epicenter of the American gang problem. Rituals and customs from Los Angeles’ eastside gangs, including hand signals, graffiti, and clothing styles, have spread to small towns and big cities alike. Many see the problem with gangs as related to urban marginality—for a Latino immigrant population struggling with poverty and social integration, gangs offer a close-knit community. Yet, as Edward Orozco Flores argues in God’s Gangs, gang members can be successfully redirected out of gangs through efforts that change the context in which they find themselves, as well as their notions of what it means to be a man.

Flores here illuminates how Latino men recover from gang life through involvement in urban, faith-based organizations. Drawing on participant observation and interviews with Homeboy Industries, a Jesuit-founded non-profit that is one of the largest gang intervention programs in the country, and with Victory Outreach, a Pentecostal ministry with over 600 chapters, Flores demonstrates that organizations such as these facilitate recovery from gang life by enabling gang members to reinvent themselves as family men and as members of their community.

The book offers a window into the process of redefining masculinity. As Flores convincingly shows, gang members are not trapped in a cycle of poverty and marginality. With the help of urban ministries, such men construct a reformed barrio masculinity to distance themselves from gang life.
