Описание: The first complete and up-to-date monograph devoted to the 18th-century painter Francesco Foschi (1710-1780), refined landscapist famous for his suggestive winter landscapes. Born in Ancona in 1710. Francesco Foschi had a prestigious career and became known as "Chevalier Foschi". His works were very much in vogue in the late 18th century and had high estimates. Among the many collectors known to have cherished his winter scenes, we find the Cardinal de Bernis, ambassador of France in Rome, Sir William Hamilton, British ambassador in Naples, the count d'Orsay, the Marchis de Robien, prince Camillo Borghese and Pauline Bonaparte. Of noble background, Foschi started his artistic training very early as a figure painter in the workshop of Francesco Mancini: his early paintings representing The Metamorphoses of Ovid (unfortunately now untraced) document his beginnings with figure paintings. In 1729 he arrived in Rome, where Gaspar Van Wittel had created great interest for this kind of paintings with city views, which were admired by many collectors. This new vogue influenced Foschi in changing his artistic direction, inclining him to paint landscapes and view paintings. In 1750 Foschi dated and signed his first known winter landscape and he did continue to paint this kind of paintings until his death (in 1780), reaching in them the highest level of his art. In his snowy landscapes, Foschi focuses on careful observation of nature (both atmospheric effects and notable details of the composition), using heavy brushstrokes and painting small figures in a soft, white landscape. The interrelationship of space, figures and nature, shapes and sophisticated colours (silvery grey clouds, snowy mountains, brown rocks) create a scene of tranquil harmony and peace.

Описание: In part one of this book Joshua L. Harper is able to demonstrate the following aspects of the Barberini version: when compared with the other Greek versions, it appears that the Barberini version was originally independent of the Septuagint but has been influenced by it in transmission. The Barberini version was probably translated no earlier than the later books of the Septuagint (that is, around the first century BC), and no later than the mid-third century AD. The style, methods of translation, and exegetical affinities suggest that the translator was primarily concerned with producing stylistic, understandable Greek rather than with conforming closely to the Hebrew source text. The translator was probably Jewish, particularly since some readings resonate with Jewish exegetical traditions. The relatively polished Greek suggests that the translator had received some formal Greek education, perhaps in a Hellenistic Jewish community. In the second part of this work Harper provides text, translation, and notes for the major Greek versions. The Barberini version has been analysed in particular detail, with regard to lexical and syntactical translation technique, as well as matters of style.
