Описание: This ambitious book provides the only systematic examination of the American abolition movement's direct impacts on antislavery politics from colonial times to the Civil War and after. As opposed to indirect methods such as propaganda, sermons, and speeches at protest meetings, Stanley Harrold focuses on abolitionists' political tactics—petitioning, lobbying, establishing bonds with sympathetic politicians—and on their disruptions of slavery itself.Harrold begins with the abolition movement's relationship to politics and government in the northern American colonies and goes on to evaluate its effect in a number of crucial contexts-the U.S. Congress during the 1790s, the Missouri Compromise, the struggle over slavery in Illinois during the 1820s, and abolitionist petitioning of Congress during that same decade. He shows how the rise of ""immediate"" abolitionism, with its emphasis on moral suasion, did not diminish direct abolitionists' impact on Congress during the 1830s and 1840s. The book also addresses abolitionists' direct actions against slavery itself, aiding escaped or kidnapped slaves, which led southern politicians to demand the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, a major flashpoint of antebellum politics. Finally, Harrold investigates the relationship between abolitionists and the Republican Party through the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Описание:

The Declaration of Independence announced equality as an American ideal, but it took the Civil War and the subsequent adoption of three constitutional amendments to establish that ideal as American law. The Reconstruction amendments abolished slavery, guaranteed all persons due process and equal protection of the law, and equipped black men with the right to vote. They established the principle of birthright citizenship and guaranteed the privileges and immunities of all citizens. The federal government, not the states, was charged with enforcement, reversing the priority of the original Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In grafting the principle of equality onto the Constitution, these revolutionary changes marked the second founding of the United States.

Eric Foner's compact, insightful history traces the arc of these pivotal amendments from their dramatic origins in pre-Civil War mass meetings of African-American "colored citizens" and in Republican party politics to their virtual nullification in the late nineteenth century. A series of momentous decisions by the Supreme Court narrowed the rights guaranteed in the amendments, while the states actively undermined them. The Jim Crow system was the result. Again today there are serious political challenges to birthright citizenship, voting rights, due process, and equal protection of the law. Like all great works of history, this one informs our understanding of the present as well as the past: knowledge and vigilance are always necessary to secure our basic rights.

Описание: In the wake of the Civil War, Constance Fenimore Woolson became one of the first northern observers to linger in the defeated states from Virginia to Florida. This volume`s sixteen essays are intent on illuminating, through her example, the neglected world of Reconstruction`s backwaters in literary developments that were politically charged and genuinely unpredictable.

Описание: Beyond the Civil War Hospital helps readers understand Reconstruction as a period of emotional turmoil that precipitated a struggle for form in cultural production. By treating selected texts from that era as multifaceted contributions to Reconstructions "mental adaptation process" (Leslie Butler), Kirsten Twelbeck diagnoses individual conflicts between the "heart and the brain" only partly compensated for by a shared concern for national healing. By tracing each texts individual adaptation of the healing trope, she identifies surprising disagreement over racial equality, womens rights, and citizenship. The book pairs female and male white authors from the antislavery North, and brings together a broad range of genres.

Описание: Gender and the Jubilee is a bold reconceptualization of black freedom during the Civil War that uncovers the political and constitutional claims made by African American women. By analyzing the actions of women in the urban environment of St. Louis and the surrounding areas of rural Missouri, Romeo uncovers the confluenceof military events, policy changes, and black agency that shaped the gendered paths to freedom and citizenship.During the turbulent years of the Civil War crisis, African American women asserted their vision of freedom through a multitude of strategies. They took concerns ordinarily under the jurisdiction of civil courts, such as assault and child custody, and transformed them into military matters. African American women petitioned military police for “free papers”; testified against former owners; fled to contraband camps; and “joined the army” with their male relatives, serving as cooks, laundresses, and nurses.Freedwomen, and even enslaved women, used military courts to lodge complaints against employers and former masters, sought legal recognition of their marriages, and claimed pensions as the widows of war veterans. Through military venues, African American women in a state where the institution of slavery remained unmolested by the Emancipation Proclamation, demonstrated a claim on citizenship rights well before they would be guaranteed through the establishment of the Fourteenth Amendment. The litigating slave women of antebellum St. Louis, and the female activists of the Civil War period, left a rich legal heritage to those who would continue the struggle for civil rights in the postbellum era.Millward opens with a striking discussion about how researching the life of asingle enslaved woman, Charity Folks, transforms our understanding of slaveryand freedom in Revolutionary America. For African American women suchas Folks, freedom, like enslavement, was tied to a bondwoman’s reproductivecapacities. Their offspring were used to perpetuate the slave economy. Findingloopholes in the law meant that enslaved women could give birth to and raisefree children. For Millward, Folks demonstrates the fluidity of the boundariesbetween slavery and freedom, which was due largely to the gendered space occupiedby enslaved women. The gendering of freedom influenced notions of liberty, equality, and race in what became the new nation and had profound implicationsfor African American women’s future interactions with the state

Описание:

Tracing the first two decades of state-funded African American schools, Educational Reconstruction addresses the ways in which black Richmonders, black Mobilians, and their white allies created, developed, and sustained a system of African American schools following the Civil War.
Hilary Green proposes a new chronology in understanding postwar African American education, examining how urban African Americans demanded quality public schools from their new city and state partners. Revealing the significant gains made after the departure of the Freedmen’s Bureau, this study reevaluates African American higher education in terms of developing a cadre of public school educator-activists and highlights the centrality of urban African American protest in shaping educational decisions and policies in their respective cities and states.

Описание: A Southern officer's war

This is a valuable Civil War memoir from a regimental officer of the Army of the Confederacy. Its author, Richard Taylor has taken a well rounded view of his experiences relating them against the events of the opening phases of the war to his military life on campaign during the Peninsula and Valley Campaigns through to Berwick's Bay, the Red River and the closing operations of the armed conflict. As a Southerner Taylor had to experience the hardships of occupation and reconstruction under Johnson and Grant and his book provides interesting perspectives on this period immediately following the cessation of hostilities. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket-a credit to the bibliophile's library
