Описание: A Book for Everyone and Nobody. In Thus Spoke Zarathustra Nietzsche addresses the problem of how to live a fulfilling life in a world without meaning, in the aftermath of `the death of God`. Nietzsche`s solution lies in the idea of eternal recurrence. This translation of Zarathustra (the first new English version for over forty years) reflects the musicality of the original German, and for the first time annotates the abundance of allusions to the Bible and other classic texts with which Nietzsche`s masterpiece is in conversation.

Описание: Thus Spoke Zarathustra is undoubtedly Nietzsche's most popular and influential work. Much of it was inspired by Nietzsche's own life and it is the work that Nietzsche himself described as his best and most important. Yet the fictional narrative structure and poetic and mythical elements make it unique amongst his writings and are a particular challenge for students engaging with it. In Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Reader's Guide, Clancy Martin and Daw-Nay Evans offer a clear and thorough account of this major philosohpical work. The book offers a detailed review of the key themes and a section-by-section commentary that will enable readers to rapidly navigate the text. Geared towards the specific requirements of students who need to reach a sound understanding of the text, the guide explores the important and complex ideas inherent in it and provides a cogent and reliable survey of the philosophical, cultural and political context, the reception and influence of Nietzsche's hugely important and largely literary work.

Описание: Nietzsche was one of the most revolutionary and subversive thinkers in Western philosophy, and Thus Spoke Zarathustra remains his most famous and influential work. It describes how the ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra descends from his solitude in the mountains to tell the world that God is dead and that the Superman, the human embodiment of divinity, is his successor. Nietzsche's utterance 'God is dead', his insistence that the meaning of life is to be found in purely human terms, and his doctrine of the Superman and the will to power were all later seized upon and unrecognisably twisted by, among others, Nazi intellectuals. With blazing intensity and poetic brilliance, Nietzsche argues that the meaning of existence is not to be found in religious pieties or meek submission to authority, but in an all-powerful life force: passionate, chaotic and free. Frederich Nietzsche became the chair of classical philology at Basel University at the age of 24 until his bad health forced him to retire in 1879. He divorced himself from society until his final collapse in 1899 when he became insane. A powerfully original thinker, Nietzsche's influence on subsequent writers, such as George Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence, Thomas Mann and Jean-Paul Sartre, was considerable.

Meant to be read alongside Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, these notes by famous British polyglot and Nietzsche student Anthony Mario Ludovici are perhaps the most incisive and penetrating analyses of the German philosopher's famous work ever committed to text. Ludovici, a talented author and philosopher in his own right, was completely fluent in German, and studied Nietzsche's works in their original German, and translated many of his major writings into English. There were therefore few, if any, English-speaking intelligentsia as familiar with Nietzsche's works as Ludovici. In this work, Ludovici provides a section-by-section analysis of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, providing along the way not only his interpretation in the light of his extensive knowledge of Nietzsche's other writings, but also many helpful facts and explanations of obscure (to the English reader) references made in the text. Ludovici's main purpose in preparing these notes was however to provide readers with a guide to understanding Nietzsche's works. As he wrote in the introduction: "I have had some opportunities of studying the conditions under which Nietzsche is read in Germany, France, and England, and I have found that, in each of these countries, students of his philosophy, as if actuated by precisely similar motives and desires, and misled by the same mistaken tactics on the part of most publishers, all proceed in the same happy-go-lucky style when 'taking him up.' "Thus Spoke Zarathustra is taken home; the reader, who perchance may know no more concerning Nietzsche than a magazine article has told him, tries to read it and, understanding less than half he reads, probably never gets further than the second or third part..." "Now, it is with the view of giving a little additional help to all those who find themselves in this position that I proceed to put forth my own personal interpretation of the more abstruse passages in this work. It represents an attempt on my part to give the reader help in surmounting difficulties which a long study of Nietzsche's life and works has enabled me, partially I hope, to overcome." This new edition also contains a short biography of Ludovici's life. Anthony Mario Ludovici (1882-1971) was born in London, England. Educated privately, his high intelligence allowed him to become fluent in several languages, and he was a leading philosopher, sociologist, and author. His topics included art, metaphysics, politics, economics, religion, the differences between the sexes, race, and eugenics. In addition, Ludovici was a talented artist, and gained employment as a painter and book illustrator. Eventually he wrote full-time, producing over 40 books and translating 60 others.

Описание: Introduction by Elisabeth Forster-Nietzsche. Translated by Thomas Common. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's most famous book, written between 1883 and 1885. Set as a narrative of the travels and speeches of Zarathustra-a name Nietzsche derived from the Indo-Aryan founder of the Zoroastrian religion-this book was described by its author as his most personal work which summed up all his essential ideas. Thus Spoke Zarathustra outlines, sometimes in poetic format, Nietzsche's central philosophical themes, which included: - The Superman. The ultimate state of being in which man can achieve total self-mastery. For Zarathustra, the Superman is the spiritual evolution towards which he journeys to get away from false superstitions and deceptive notions of morality and justice. -The Eternal Recurrence. The notion that time is eternal and that all things that have happened will happen again. This, for Nietzsche, is true eternal life, and leads on to Zarathustra rejecting all other interpretations of immortality or eternity. - The Will to Power. The psychological state at which the Superman must arrive if he is to accept the eternal recurrence. This Will to Power provides the mainspring for the Superman to overcome all other obstacles: social, moral, and philosophical. It is the ability to transcend the nature of society, not to dominate it. "Zarathustra was the first to see in the struggle between good and evil the essential wheel in the working of things. In his teaching alone do we meet with truthfulness upheld as the highest virtue-ie the reverse of the cowardice of the 'idealist' who flees from reality. To tell the truth and to aim straight: that is the first Persian virtue. Am I understood? The overcoming of morality through itself-through truthfulness, the overcoming of the moralist through his opposite-through me- that is what the name Zarathustra means in my mouth."-from the Introduction.
