Описание: This is a non-fiction book that consists of fourteen chapters, each of which is an interview with women dramatists from a different part of the world. Featured in these chapters: Dah Teatar: Belgrade, Serbia; ASHTAR Theatre: Palestine; VOICETheatre: Paris and New York; ISOKO Theatre: Rwanda; Teatro PASMI: Chile; Sina Chhon: Cambodia; Catharsis: Lebanon; AHRDO Theatre: Afghanistan; Simorgh Film & Theatre: Afghanistan; Dalia Basiouny: Egypt; Ajoka Theatre: Pakistan; Rafiki Theatre: Uganda; The River and the Mountain: Uganda; FAVILEK and the Bond Street Theatre: Haiti and New York. The Stage Warriors are women from around the world who use theater to talk about war, politics, crime, abuse, and violence in nations where these subjects are taboo. The interviews in this book explain how these women came to use theater to enact change, who they help, and the importance of their work. Beyond the boundaries of poverty, religion, and intolerance, these women use theater to broaden citizen participation, bring focus and energy, and reshape national identity. Through the shows and workshops they create, the Warriors are finding ways to help the disenfranchised exert power in education, politics, the economy, and the home. The Stage Warriors have faced stiff resistance. Some have seen their offices consumed in flames. Others have found their cars destroyed. Still others have been physically assaulted. Yet nothing stops these women from making a space where their voices can be heard. These theater practitioners display the resourcefulness, strength, and promise that characterise women across the globe who are steadily bringing stability and justice to conflicted regions.

Описание:

Suffragists recognized that the media played an essential role in the women's suffrage movement and the public's understanding of it. From parades to going to jail for voting, activists played to the mass media of their day. They also created an energetic niche media of suffragist journalism and publications.

This collection offers new research on media issues related to the women's suffrage movement. Contributors incorporate media theory, historiography, and innovative approaches to social movements while discussing the vexed relationship between the media and debates over suffrage. Aiming to correct past oversights, the essays explore overlooked topics such as coverage by African American and Mormon-oriented media, media portrayals of black women in the movement, suffragist rhetorical strategies, elites within the movement, suffrage as part of broader campaigns for social transformation, and the influence views of white masculinity had on press coverage.

Contributors: Maurine H. Beasley, Sherilyn Cox Bennion, Jinx C. Broussard, Teri Finneman, Kathy Roberts Forde, Linda M. Grasso, Carolyn Kitch, Brooke Kroeger, Linda J. Lumsden, Jane Marcellus, Jane Rhodes, Linda Steiner, and Robin Sundaramoorthy

Описание: In a late 1590s atlas proof from cartographer John Speed, Queen Elizabeth appears, crowned and brandishing a ruler as the map's scale-of-miles. Not just a map key, the queen™'s depiction here presents her as a powerful arbiter of measurement in her kingdom. For Speed, the queen was a formidable female presence, authoritative, ready to measure any place or person. The atlas, finished during James' reign, later omitted her picture. But this disappearance did not mean Elizabeth vanished entirely; her image and her connection to geography appear in multiple plays and maps. Elizabeth becomes, like the ruler she holds, an instrument applied and adapted. Women and Geography on the Early Modern English Stage explores the ways in which mapmakers, playwrights, and audiences in early modern England could, following their queen™'s example, use the ideas of geography, or 'world-writing', to reshape the symbolic import of the female body and territory to create new identities. The book demonstrates how early modern mapmakers and dramatists -- men and women -- conceived of and constructed identities within a discourse of fluid ideas about space and gender.

Описание: Dangerous Discourses brings together new work by feminist scholars who provide a multifaceted view of the ways contemporary media discourses inscribe particular understandings of gendered social identities, gun violence, and public policy.
The chapters examine multiple media locations where discourses about guns and violence against women proliferate, including social media, mainstream news, National Rifle Association-sponsored magazines, gun research, public policy debates, popular magazines, and television drama.
Utilizing theory and empirical research, this book helps us see more clearly how gender, sexuality, and other intersecting identities must be included in analysis of media discourses of guns and gendered violence. The authors discuss the role of patriarchal ideologies, and center feminist thought and concerns in order to get beyond the one-liners, sound bites, and truisms about bad guys, the Second Amendment, mental health, and personal freedom that currently dominate public debates about guns and violence.
With its unique views on the ways gun violence and gender inflect each other in the United States, this book is designed for courses in media studies, women’s studies, and sociology.

Damnable practises: witches, dangerous women, and music in seventeenth-century english broadside ballads

Описание: Broadside ballads-folio-sized publications containing verse, a tune indication, and woodcut imagery-related cautionary tales, current events, and simplified myth and history to a wide range of social classes across seventeenth century England. Ballads straddled, and destabilized, the categories of public and private performance spaces, the material and the ephemeral, music and text, and oral and written traditions. Sung by balladmongers in the streets and referenced in theatrical works, they were also pasted to the walls of local taverns and domestic spaces. They titillated and entertained, but also educated audiences on morality and gender hierarchies. Although contemporaneous writers published volumes on the early modern controversy over women and the English witch craze, broadside ballads were perhaps more instrumental in disseminating information about dangerous women and their acoustic qualities. Recent scholarship has explored the representations of witchcraft and malfeasance in English street literature; until now, however, the role of music and embodied performance in communicating female transgression has yet to be investigated. Sarah Williams carefully considers the broadside ballad as a dynamic performative work situated in a unique cultural context. Employing techniques drawn from musical analysis, gender studies, performance studies, and the histories of print and theater, she contends that broadside ballads and their music made connections between various degrees of female crime, the supernatural, and cautionary tales for and about women.

The essays in Women Warriors in Early Modern Spain examine many such examples, demonstrating how women battled the status quo, defended certain causes, challenged authority, and broke barriers. Such women did not necessarily engage in masculine pursuits, but often used cultural production and engaged in social subversion to exercise resistance in the home, in the convent, on stage, or at their writing desks. Q: What led you to pursue a career in law enforcement?
A: I thought about it a great deal while I was serving in the Army. After I got out, I took the test and was subsequently called for training. I liked the idea of police work because it was a challenge, and it was exciting. Frankly, I couldn't imagine working in an office from 9 - 5 every day.

Q: What types of crimes did you investigate as an agent?
A: Mostly violent crimes-narcotics, outlaw motorcycle gangs, organized crime. I worked several undercover assignments, dealing with drugs and public corruption. I became a member of the SWAT team and was a sniper. I served as the principle firearms instructor in the Detroit Division for a while. While assigned to the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia, I served as an instructor in tactics, physical training, and street survival.

Q: In your many years in law enforcement, what insights do you have into the criminal mind that you've used in your novels?
A: Having interviewed hundreds of suspects, I have a fairly good idea of where they were coming from, their mindset and mentality, I was able to understand their rationale for committing crimes, and thus give them the impression that I was sympathetic to their cause. That approach often allowed me to create a bond that caused them to divulge information about their crime. Understanding what goes through the minds of criminals allowed me to develop informants, who are often the key to solving a crime.

Описание: Armed Ambiguity interrogates tropes of the woman warrior constructed by print culture—including press reports, novels, dramatic works, and lyrical texts—during the decades-long conflict in Europe around 1800.Julie Koser sheds new light on how women’s bodies became a semiotic battleground for competing social, cultural, and political agendas in one of the most critical periods of modern history. Reading the women warriors in this book as barometers of the social and political climate in German?speaking territories, Koser reveals how literary texts and cultural artifacts foregrounding women’s armed insurrection perpetuated or contested the discursive construction and illusionary dichotomization of “public” versus “private” spheres along a gendered fault line. Koser illuminates how reactionary visions of “ideal femininity” competed with subversive fantasies of new femininities in the ideological battle being waged over the restructuring of German society.
