Many managed to reach us in post-biblical sources: rabbinic literature, Jewish Hellenistic writings, the writings of the Dead Sea sect, the Aramaic, Greek, Latin, and other ancient translations of the Bible, and even outside the ancient Jewish world in Christian and Islamic texts. The Bible itself sometimes alludes to these traditions, often in surprising contexts.
Written in clear and accessible language, this volume presents thirty such traditions. It voyages behind the veil of the written Bible to reconstruct what was told and retold among the ancient Israelites, even if it is “not what the Bible tells us.”

Fascicle IG II/III3 1, 2 contains 275 laws and decrees from the years between 352/1 BC and the end of the Lamian War in 322/1. They provide an authentic picture of Athenian politics and its protagonists before Athens' defeat at the Battle of Chaironeia (338), in the "Age of Lycurgus" that followed, and the final years until the capitulation of the city to Antipater and the end of its independence. There is an index to the inscriptions, and where preserved these are illustrated with photographs.
Die Insel Kos besitzt neben Athen und Rhodos den groten Bestand antiker Inschriften. Ihre Gesamtzahl betragt ca. 3.500. Sie kommen vor allem aus dem Gebiet der antiken Stadt Kos, dem weltberuhmten Heiligtum des Asklepios vor den Toren der Stadt und aus den Demen Halasarna, Antimachia und Isthmos.
Die Arbeiten an einem Corpus der Inschriften von Kos reichen bis in das 19. Jh. zuruck und sind verbunden mit den Namen von W. R. Paton, R. Herzog, J. Zarraphtes und M. Segre. Der vorliegende erste Teil des auf funf Bande geplanten Corpus enthalt historisch und religionsgeschichtlich besonders wichtige Texte: 245 Dekrete des koischen Staates und auswartiger Stadte (hervorzuheben sind Ehrendekrete fur koische Arzte aus der beruhmten Schule des Hippokrates und zahlreiche Anerkennungsschreiben der Asylie des Asklepieions aus dem Jahre 242 v.Chr.), ferner zahlreiche Briefe hellenistischer Konige und romischer Kaiser sowie 140 Sakralinschriften, die die Kultausubung im Asklepieion und in den zahlreichen Heiligtumern auf der Insel regelten und die Pflichten der Priester vorschrieben. Der zweite Faszikel, der die Namenslisten, die Weih- und Ehreninschriften von Kos umfassen wird, ist in Vorbereitung und wird 2012 erscheinen.
Alle Texte wurden an den Steinen uberpruft und revidiert. Fruhere Lesungen und Erganzungen sind in einem Kritischen Apparat verzeichnet. Beigegeben sind ferner Beschreibungen der Inschrifttrager, kurze Kommentare und Sekundarliteratur. Ausfuhrliche Indizes sowie Fotografien aller erhaltener Inschriften sind fur den letzten Faszikel vorgesehen.
