Название: Shooting for the Record: Adolph Toepperwein, Tom Frye, and Sharpshooting`s Forgotten Controversy ISBN: 089672977X ISBN-13(EAN): 9780896729773 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Цена: 31410.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Every few years, a book comes along that makes an important contribution to the history of American sport, even though—or, maybe, because—its storyline delves into the obscure. The event that launches the narrative in Shooting for the Record is the 1959 news report that strapping and handsome Tom Frye had broken sharpshooting’s endurance world record after he shot at 100,000 hand-thrown wooden cubes and missed only six. But even as the Guinness Book of World Records immortalized Frye, previous record-holder Adolph Toepperwein, having just reached his 90th birthday, was sitting down to write a letter accusing Frye of cheating. Frye and Toepperwein were the two top-performing riflemen in the history of shooting sports, with the span of one generation separating them. Both had performed hundreds of sharpshooting exhibitions on behalf of major firearms manufacturers Winchester and Remington. Shooting for the Record reminds readers of America’s longtime fascination with the shooting sports. It's a story that explores far beyond the nearly-superhuman feats of these two individuals. The author reaches back to the grand productions of 1880s Wild West shows and tracks the growth of shooting sports through today.
Автор: Flegel Название: Conceptualizing Cruelty to Children in Nineteenth-Century England ISBN: 1138261874 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781138261877 Издательство: Taylor&Francis Рейтинг: Цена: 58170.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Moving nimbly between literary and historical texts, Monica Flegel provides a much-needed interpretive framework for understanding the specific formulation of child cruelty popularized by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the late nineteenth century. Flegel considers a wide range of well-known and more obscure texts from the mid-eighteenth century to the early twentieth, including philosophical writings by Locke and Rousseau, poetry by Coleridge, Blake, and Caroline Norton, works by journalists and reformers like Henry Mayhew and Mary Carpenter, and novels by Frances Trollope, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, and Arthur Morrison. Taking up crucial topics such as the linking of children with animals, the figure of the child performer, the relationship between commerce and child endangerment, and the problem of juvenile delinquency, Flegel examines the emergence of child abuse as a subject of legal and social concern in England, and its connection to earlier, primarily literary representations of endangered children. With the emergence of the NSPCC and the new crime of cruelty to children, new professions and genres, such as child protection and social casework, supplanted literary works as the authoritative voices in the definition of social ills and their cure. Flegel argues that this development had material effects on the lives of children, as well as profound implications for the role of class in representations of suffering and abused children. Combining nuanced close readings of individual texts with persuasive interpretations of their influences and limitations, Flegel's book makes a significant contribution to the history of childhood, social welfare, the family, and Victorian philanthropy.
William Penn's life was, at its core, a search for peace. This study concentrates attention on his greatest effort to secure true peace for all--his undertaking to populate and cultivate the region of North America granted him by the English Crown in March 1681.
Penn intended that Pennsylvania should be a haven for seekers of religious freedom and liberty of conscience, especially those who, for the sake of faith and principle, had suffered property forfeiture or bodily imprisonment during the persecutions of the English Civil War, Commonwealth, Protectorate, and Restoration. In commenting on how he had acquired Pennsylvania and what ends it might serve, Penn wrote to William Harrison:
For my country, I eyed] the Lord in the obtaining of it; and more was I drawn inward to look to Him, and to o we it] to His hand and power, than to any ot her way]. I have so obtained it and desire that I may not be unworthy of His love, but do that which may answer yet His kind providence and serve His Truth and people; that an example may be set up to the nations. There may be room there, though not here, for such a holy experiment
This book traces the historical progress of the foremost themes of the holy experiment from 1681, when Penn wrote the above letter to Harrison. These themes were most fully realized by the 1750s, but the holy experiment continued until 1781, when the experiment was finally laid down. The great themes of the experiment, in addition to the founding principles of peace grounded in religious freedom and liberty of conscience, were public education, preserving friendship with the Native Americans, and abolishing the evil of slavery. By the end of the experiment in 1781, both successes and failures had been realized, successes and failures that continue to underlie the society America has become since those days of its birthing at Philadelphia when the founding fathers gave order to the United States.
