Описание: Nash analyzes the unfolding of Reconstruction in the mountain counties of southern Appalachia, focusing on the particular ways that region`s patterns of development, relatively low levels of prewar slaveholding, political allegiances, histories of violence, etc., shaped the era politically and socially. Nash chronicles the region`s political transformation, first as a new politics predicated on wartime loyalty rose in place of the prewar partisan system. He argues this first transition was followed by a further transformation as anti-Confederates relied on the federal government (mostly in the form of the Freedmen`s Bureau) to establish a coherent party and platform in the region. Finally, Nash shows how the Conservative resurgence toppled this new regime, with conservatives aggressively courting new economic development schemes in order to connect the region into the burgeoning national markets--

Описание: John Field, an ordained minister in the Established Church during the sixteenth century described playhouses as 'schools of wickedness' and 'sinks of sin'. Little did he know that, after his death, his son Nathan (Nat) Field would become one of Britain's most celebrated players and playwrights. Impressed under royal warrant to become a member of the Children of the Chapel Royal, Nat progressed to star in plays such as Epicene, Bartholomew Fair and Bussy d'Ambois. He later became an adult member of the King's Men, wrote two highly successful plays of his own and collaborated with writers such as Fletcher and Massinger on many more. Nat, who died at the age of thirty-one, had a considerable reputation in his own day. His career has been neglected recently but in this carefully researched biography the picture of his life is pieced together to reveal one of the most famous names in the theatre of seventeenth-century

Описание: Among many legendary episodes from the life and career of men's basketball coach Dean Smith, few loom as large as his recruitment of Charlie Scott, the first African American scholarship athlete at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Drawn together by college basketball in a time of momentous change, Smith and Scott helped transform a university, a community, and the racial landscape of sports in the South. But there is much more to this story than is commonly told. In Game Changers, Art Chansky reveals an intense saga of race, college sport, and small-town politics. At the center were two young men, Scott and Smith, both destined for greatness but struggling through challenges on and off the court, among them the storms of civil rights protest and the painfully slow integration of a Chapel Hill far less progressive than its reputation today might suggest.

Drawing on extensive personal interviews and a variety of other sources, Chansky takes readers beyond the basketball court to highlight the community that supported Smith and Scott during these demanding years, from assistant basketball coach John Lotz to influential pastor the Reverend Robert Seymour to pioneering African American mayor Howard Lee. Dispelling many myths that surround this period, Chansky nevertheless offers an ultimately triumphant portrait of a student-athlete and coach who ensured the University of North Carolina would never be the same.

Описание: In this illuminating study, Steven E. Nash chronicles the history of Reconstruction as it unfolded in the mountains of western North Carolina. Nash presents a complex story of the region's grappling with the war's aftermath, examining the persistent wartime loyalties that informed bitter power struggles between factions of white mountaineers determined to rule. For a brief period, an influx of federal governmental power enabled white anti-Confederates to ally with former slaves in order to lift the Republican Party to power locally and in the state as a whole. Republican success led to a violent response from a transformed class of elites, however, who claimed legitimacy from the antebellum period while pushing for greater integration into the market-oriented New South.

Focusing on a region that is still underrepresented in the Reconstruction historiography, Nash illuminates the diversity and complexity of Appalachian political and economic machinations, while bringing to light the broad and complicated issues the era posed to the South and the nation as a whole.
