For fifty years, world-class poets have come to the village library in Katonah, New York to read for the Katonah Poetry Series. For close to 25 of those years, Billy Collins has curated the series. Psychologist and poet Andrew Kuhn interviewed 21 of these poets before their readings, asking probing questions about craft and the creative process. The poets themselves expressed surprise and appreciation for where these conversations went. These unique exchanges are now collected in How a Poem Can Happen: Conversations With Twenty-One Extraordinary Poets. With a foreword by Billy Collins.
Advance readers are enthusiastic.
"Andy Kuhn's questions become conversations that, one by one, deeply engage and enlighten. With major poets so forthright about their craft, you'll wish you were in the room. At the very least keep How a Poem Can Happen close at hand. It's simply a gem of a book." ---Alexander Neubauer, author of Poetry in Person: 25 Years of Conversation with America's Poets (Knopf, 2010)
"While asking (and answering) questions about process, influences and the writerly life may seem easy, it's really about letting the conversation go toward the unexpected, the uncharted. These interviews give us insight into one of the most difficult jobs to describe: the poetic mind and its workings. And Kuhn has just the right touch--after reading, we readers receive "the poet" as an even more human, and humane, artist." ---Sophie Cabot Black, author of The Exchange: Poems (Greywolf, 2013)
These poets include three Poet Laureates of the United States--Billy Collins, Robert Pinsky, Kay Ryan--and many other distinguished authors of multiple award-winning collections, like Paul Muldoon, Alan Shapiro, Ellen Bass. (See the full list below).

Описание: Building on David M. Engel and Frank W. Munger’s work analyzing the narratives of people with physical and learning disabilities, this book examines the life stories of twelve physically disabled Canadian adults through the prism of the social model of disablement. Using a grounded theory approach and with extensive reporting of the thoughts of the participants in their own words, the book uses narratives to explore whether an advocacy identity helps or hinders dealings with systemic barriers for disabled people in education, employment, and transportation. The book underscores how both physical and attitudinal barriers by educators, employers and service providers complicate the lives of disabled people. The book places a particular focus on the importance of political economy and the changes to the labour market for understanding the marginalization and oppression of people with disabilities. By melding socio-legal approaches with insights from feminist, critical race, and queer legal theory, Ravi Malhotra and Morgan Rowe ask if we need to reconsider the social model of disablement, and proposes avenues for inclusive legal reform.

Описание: Like pearls threaded one-by-one to form a necklace, five women successively nurtured students on the Purdue University campus in America’s heartland from the 1930s to the 1990s. Individually, each became a legendary dean of women or dean of students. Collectively, they wove a sisterhood of mutual support in their common—sometimes thwarted—pursuit of shared human rights and equality.Dorothy C. Stratton, Helen B. Schleman, M. Beverley Stone, Barbara I. Cook, and Betty M. Nelson opened new avenues for women and became conduits for change, fostering opportunities for all people. They were loved by students and revered by colleagues. The women also were respected throughout the United States as founding leaders of the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARs), frontrunners in the National Association of Women Deans and Counselors, and as pivotal members of presidential committees in the Kennedy and Nixon administrations. While it is focused on changing attitudes on one college campus, The Deans’ Bible sheds light on cultural change in America as a whole, exploring how each of the deans participated nationally in the quest for equality. The story rolls through the “picture-perfect,” suppressive 1950s, the awakening 1960s, women’s liberation, Title IX, 1980s AIDS and alcohol epidemics, the changing mores for the disabled, and ends in the twenty-first century. As each woman succeeded the other, forming a five-dean friendship, they knitted their bond with a secret symbol—a Bible. Originally possessed by Purdue’s first part-time Dean of Women Carolyn Shoemaker, the Bible was handed down from dean to dean with favorite passages marked. The lowercased word “bible” is often used in connection with reference works or “guidebooks.” The Deans’ Bible serves as a guidebook, brimming with stories of courageous women who led by example and lived their convictions.
