Why does an estimated 5% of the general population intentionally and repeatedly hurt themselves? What are the reasons certain people resort to self-injury as a way to manage their daily lives? In Why Do We Hurt Ourselves, sociologist Baptiste Brossard draws on a five-year survey of self-injurers and suggests that the answers can be traced to social, more than personal, causes. Self-injury is not a matter of disturbed individuals resorting to hurting themselves in the face of individual weaknesses and difficulties. Rather, self-injury is the reaction of individuals to the tensions that compose, day after day, the tumultuousness of their social life and position. Self-harm is a practice that people use to self-control and maintain order--to calm down, or to avoid "going haywire" or "breaking everything." More broadly, through this research Brossard works to develop a perspective on the contemporary social world at large, exploring quests for self-control in modern Western societies.

What does family mean to you?
What does family make you feel?
Our families are our most precious resource. They serve as our support system, an educational network, a source of inspiration and a grounding influence for each other; now and for generations to come.
Families share love, inspiration, respect, ambition, and teach responsibility. Families share affection and good times -Thanksgiving, the holidays, birthdays and anniversaries. Families represent our sense of security and continuity. Often the vast importance of mentoring is overlooked as a seemingly natural aspect of family. Our role as mentors means we too must continuously learn, grow and communicate with respect, empathy and passion. It has been demonstrated over and over that the most successful individuals are those who were properly mentored in preparing for life, profession, relationship responsibility and personal and financial morality.
The value and impact of family mentorship in pivotal areas of our lives cannot be overstated.
The "Five Family Lessons From Geese" help us express our values and encourage family connectivity and continuity while reminding us of the solid platform to which we must direct both our energies and gratitude.
As family we all have a responsibility to set examples for each other in personal and financial morality and in continuous development, learning and sharing. We hope you share the Family Lessons with all of your family. Let them know you care. Let them know they're special. Let them know you love them.

As we experience and manipulate time—be it as boredom or impatience—it becomes an object: something materialized and social, something that affects perception, or something that may motivate reconsideration and change. The editors and contributors to this important new book, Ethnographies of Youth and Temporality, have provided a diverse collection of ethnographic studies and theoretical explorations of youth experiencing time in a variety of contemporary socio-cultural settings.
The essays in this volume focus on time as an external and often troubling factor in young people’s lives, and shows how emotional unrest and violence but also creativity and hope are responses to troubling times. The chapters discuss notions of time and its and its “objectification” in diverse locales including the Georgian Republic, Brazil, Denmark and Uganda.
Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, the essays in Ethnographies of Youth and Temporality use youth as a prism to understand time and its subjective experience.
