Bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary methods of creating architectural design drawings and 3D models through the use of digital tools and computational processes

This book provides readers with an overview of traditional and contemporary architectural representation methods and offers insight into significant developments in computing as they apply to architectural drawing and modeling. It offers readers a look into recent developments in technologies that have impacted architectural design and representation workflows, and focuses on digital design software used in higher education and industry, including Robert McNeel & Associates Rhinoceros(R) (Rhino 6 for Windows), Grasshopper(R), and Adobe Illustrator(R) CC. The book covers fundamental methods for digital drawing, 3D modeling, and visual programming through descriptions, examples, and tutorial-based instructions specific to the production of digital design drawings and graphics.

Drawing from the Model: Fundamentals of Digital Drawing, 3D Modeling, and Visual Programming in Architectural Design presents beginning architectural design students and professionals with a broad overview of drawing and modeling in architectural representation, by addressing historical analog methods based on descriptive geometry and projection and transitioning to contemporary digital methods based on computational processes and emerging technologies. The book focuses on digital tools, techniques, and workflows for the production of design drawings; plans, sections, elevations, axonometrics, and perspectives, utilizing contemporary, cutting-edge 2D drawing and 3D modeling, design software. Additionally, visual programming is introduced to address topics of parametric modeling, algorithmic design, computational simulations, physical computing, and robotics, as methods for exploring architectural design and experimental drawing processes. Sections cover Architectural Representation and Digital Technologies; The 3D Modeling Environment and Geometry; Architectural Design Drawings and Graphics; and Computational Design. It features an appendix filled with 10 design drawing and 3D modeling exercises intended as educational and pedagogical examples for readers to practice and/or teach workflows that are addressed in the book.

  • Acts as an important bridge between analog hand-drawing and digital design drawing techniques, with examples of traditional and contemporary architectural design drawings
  • Provides comprehensive coverage of architectural representation, computing, computer-aided drafting, and 3D modeling tools, techniques, and workflows, for contemporary architectural design drawing aesthetics and graphics
  • Introduces topics of parametric modeling, algorithmic design, computational simulation, physical computing, and robotics through visual programming environments and processes
  • Features tutorial-based instruction using the latest versions of Rhino 6 for Windows, Grasshopper(R), Adobe Illustrator(R) CC, and Arduino

Drawing from the Model will serve as an excellent resource for beginning architectural design students in higher education and as a helpful reference for professionals in practice, teaching readers beginning and intermediate digital representation methods for the production of architectural design drawings that reflect contemporary aesthetics and graphics. These drawings are generated using 3D modeling and parametric/algorithmic workflows to create linework that is enhanced with digital drawing and graphic design software. Additional workflows include the use of 3D modeling and visual programming environments to explore fundamental concepts of computational simulations, physical computing, and robotics and introductory methods for addressing these topics.

Petroleum Engineering: Principles, Calculations and Workflows cover principles, calculations and workflows for solving a wide range of petroleum engineering problems using different approaches. Solution workflows are typically created that improve calculations and repeatability, produce improved reliable models and accurate parameters. Each chapter in this volume deals with a specific petroleum engineering problem or characterization method, important formulae that helps explain the primary principle of the petroleum engineering problem, and application of each formulae which is based on underlying formulation and/or assumptions. This volume also covers what formulae or model should be used for diagnosis, initial modelling of parameters and for simulation and regression.

Volume highlights include -

- A robust approach to solving inverse problems which require workflows with model validation (for model based predictions) and parameter validation

- Complex calculations that can easily be implemented with simple but accurate methods using spreadsheets, with a very few requiring VBA (where VBA has been used, sample codes are provide to guide implementation)

- Simple but accurate approaches to solving some complex, mathematical problems that may be required for software and application development

- Fundamental to advanced level calculations that makes the proposed volume a one-stop-solution reference material for solving practical petroleum engineering problems

Principles, Calculations and Workflows in Petroleum Engineering is a valuable resource to a wide community of geoscientists, earth scientists, exploration geologists and engineers, including graduates and postgraduate students who want to understand direct application of petroleum engineering principles in solving real life petroleum engineering problems; consultants who want to solve problems with high degree of accuracy and reduced uncertainty, software developers who want to understand how best to code and implement workflows for specific and general petroleum engineering softwares, and professionals as reference material for day-to-day petroleum engineering problem solving.

Описание: Predictive Coding is the process of training supervised machine-learning algorithms on pre-coded example documents, and then using the trained machine to automatically predict the coding of new documents collected in the legal eDiscovery process. While supervised machine-learning has been used for over 15 years in several applications (such as detecting spam in emails, disease in patients, human faces in pictures, likely customers from a marketing database, etc.), its adoption in eDiscovery has been slow. The key reasons include insufficient understanding of the technology (often perceived as a black box), improper use of statistics (often doubted for its applicability to natural language documents), and confusion around workflows currently used in the industry (often resulting in dissatisfactory results). This book intends to challenge the status quo with:

  • Easy to understand explanation of fundamental concepts of predictive coding technology including the vector space model, feature selection, and general framework used by most predictive coding algorithms.
  • Detailed explanation of the three most common algorithms used for predictive coding - k Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) - in plain English.
  • Walk-through of core concepts essential for applying and interpreting statistics correctly. Practical guidance on avoiding common errors and pitfalls.
  • Lucid step-by-step explanation of the two general workflow approaches - Technology Assisted Review and Technology Suggested Review - currently used in the industry in several derivative forms.
  • A new workflow - the Greedy Workflow - that delivers better results, and offers flexibility and other properties useful in the context of eDiscovery.
In addition, the book contains detailed results of testing the greedy workflow on two real eDiscovery datasets. The first dataset contained 216,594 documents excluding Excel files. The greedy workflow predictively coded 76% of the documents with 100% precision and 87% recall. The second dataset contained 93,982 Excel files only. The greedy workflow predictively coded 50% of the Excel files with 100% precision and 76% recall.

Описание: Workflow, process, or business process mapping has been discovered by organizations of all kinds as being a powerful tool to analyze and improve their internal processes. It has attracted major attention from software vendors, including Oracle and IBM, who market systems that are designed to map processes and quantify all aspects of their operations. These systems can be very effective at capturing the formal or explicit knowledge inherent to any workflow; however, a long-term problem with these approaches is that the full `knowledge base` underlying these processes contains many elements which are `tacit knowledge.` Despite being outside of the formal knowledge base, tacit knowledge must be addressed when describing the nature and functioning of processes. A key feature of the mapping method used in this book is that it makes both formal and tacit knowledge explicit in the workflow maps it produces. Much of what has been learned in the years of applying and teaching this method is that software-driven approaches are hobbled by the complications presented by tacit knowledge in workflows. Until both formal and tacit knowledge are understood these software-driven approaches cannot achieve their full potential. Consequently the mapping process here, by necessity, becomes a method for managing knowledge as well as a method of mapping the flow of materials and information. While it is a basis for process improvement in its own right, it can support development of both software-driven process mapping and the creation of dynamic programs on the basis of accurate understanding of existing workflows.
