Описание: The anonymous Latin Story of Apollonius, King of Tyre (Historia Apollonii regis Tyri) is a romance of adventure, possibly of Greek origins, with Christian elements in its plot. Well known for its important afterlife, including Shakespeare’s Pericles, the Story of Apollonius is commonly viewed as a Christianised folktale of a sub-literary character. This literary and philological commentary interprets the text within the framework of ancient prose fiction, Christian literary tradition, and pagan culture, and discusses in detail its language, style, and narrative technique.

Описание: The present volume comprises the papers delivered at RICAN 6, which was held in Rethymnon, Crete, on May 30-31, 2011. The focus is placed on male and female characters in the ancient novel and related texts, both pagan and Christian; these characters are presented either as holy or as charlatans but in several cases the two categories cannot be easily distinguished from each other. The papers offer a wide and rich range of perspectives: authority in narratives and authority figures from Teiresias to Apollonius of Tyana as comparands for Kalasiris in Heliodorus (Dowden); the astrologer Serapa as a holy man in Petronius and Trimalchio's exploitation of Serapa's pronouncement and his prediction (Schmeling); the old hag Oenothea as a figure of religious authority and medical expertise in the Satyrica and Encolpius' failure to recognize her as a charlatan (Panayotakis); Cleitophon's claims to knowledge in Achilles Tatius and his apparent lack of understanding of his own narrative (Repath); religious authority in Daphnis and Chloe and the role of the exegetes (‘expounder') in Longus' preface (Bowie); the Syrian priests and other religious charlatans in Apuleius' Metamorphoses and their appeal to the reader (Egelhaaf-Gaisser); the contrast in the representation of holy men and charlatans in Lucian's Peregrinus and the Christian Acts of Mar Mari (Ramelli); the controversial figure of Kalasiris in Heliodorus, a priest who behaves like a charlatan (Billault); Apollonius of Tyana as Proteus and Philostratus' contest with Homer in the Life of Apollonius (Paschalis); the similarities in the narrative structure of the biographies of Aesop and Jesus (Andreassi); narrative qualities and intertextuality in the Narrations attributed to Neilos of Ankyra; its interpretation as a conversion-narrative (Morgan).

In eighteenth-century Greek culture, Iosipos Moisiodax (c.1725-1800) was a controversial figure, whose daring pronouncements in favor of cultural change embroiled him in ideological conflicts and made him a target of persecution. The first intellectual in Southeastern Europe to voice the ideas of the Enlightenment in public and without qualification, he advocated the use of vernacular Greek in education and aspired to see the backward and intellectually conservative Balkan societies remodeled along European lines. In the first modern book-length treatment of this passionate reformer, Paschalis Kitromilides skillfully retraces Moisiodax's career and contrasts the Greek Enlightenment with the Western Enlightenment as a whole, enriching our understanding of each tradition in the process. Moisiodax's efforts failed tragically in his own lifetime, but his vision of the Enlightenment was an impressive project of intellectual reconstruction that had a considerable effect after his death, both in the promotion of modern scientific ideas and in the enunciation of republican politics in Southeastern Europe. The methodology of literary history has traditionally dominated inquiries about his life and about the Greek Enlightenment in general, but here both man and movement are examined from an interdisciplinary perspective. Drawing on a broad range of sources and combining insights from the social sciences, cultural history, and political theory, this work reveals Moisiodax as a figure of major significance in the ideological tradition of Southeastern Europe.

Описание: To comprehend how Greece precipitated such an outsized economic crisis in Europe, we must understand how it developed into a nation in the first place. Enlightenment and Revolution traces the ideologies that shaped a Greek-speaking religious community into a modern nation-state--one in which antiliberal forces have exacted a high price.
