The doctrine of papal infallibility is a central tenet of Roman Catholicism, and yet it is frequently misunderstood by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Much of the present-day theological discussion points to the definition of papal infallibility made at Vatican I in 1870, but the origins of the debate are much older than that. In Certain Sainthood, Donald S. Prudlo traces this history back to the Middle Ages, to a time when Rome was struggling to extend the limits of papal authority over Western Christendom. Indeed, as he shows, the very notion of papal infallibility grew out of debates over the pope's authority to canonize saints.Prudlo's story begins in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries when Rome was increasingly focused on the fight against heresy. Toward this end the papacy enlisted the support of the young mendicant orders, specifically the Dominicans and Franciscans. As Prudlo shows, a key theme in the papacy's battle with heresy was control of canonization: heretical groups not only objected to the canonizing of specific saints, they challenged the concept of sainthood in general. In so doing they attacked the roots of papal authority. Eventually, with mendicant support, the very act of challenging a papally created saint was deemed heresy.Certain Sainthood draws on the insights of a new generation of scholarship that integrates both lived religion and intellectual history into the study of theology and canon law. The result is a work that will fascinate scholars and students of church history as well as a wider public interested in the evolution of one of the world’s most important religious institutions.

Описание: Hardcover, xvi, 211 pp. Originally published: Cambridge: At the University Press, 1915. Papal Bulls and other documents produced by the Cancellaria Apostolica comprise one of the most important bodies of western canon and ecclesiastical law. They were especially important during the early and high medieval era, the period considered in this incisive study. Poole analyzes the paleographic features of documents produced between the ninth and early thirteenth centuries and their modes of transmission. Turning to the authors, he outlines the history of the Papal Chancery and the characteristics of its literary style. He concludes with a group of useful appendixes containing sample documents and bibliographic data. Revised from Poole's Birkbeck lectures delivered at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1913. "It contains a vast amount of information very clearly arranged, and in a small compass: and an examination of the references shows that Dr. Poole has an enviable command of the widely scattered literature of his subject. There is no other work in English which deals with the machinery of the early Papal Chancery, and the diplomatic and pal ographical characteristics of its productions. Even those who have ready access to the manuals of Giry and Bresslau will find much new material here, especially in the chapter dealing with the 'cursus' and in the valuable appendices. English lawyers will take special pleasure in the chapter which relates to the criticism of documents at the Papal court, where, as in England, so much depends on the verification of seals." --32 Law Quarterly Review 226 (1916) Reginald Lane Poole 1857-1939] was a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford; Keeper of the University Archives, 1909-1927; Assistant editor of the English Historical Review on its foundation in 1885 and later editor until 1920. With William Hunt, he edited The Political History of England, 12 volumes (1905-1910).

Описание: On taking the cross, crusaders received a diverse set of privileges designed to appeal to both spiritual and more temporal concerns. Among these was the papal protection granted to them and extended over their families and possessions at home. This book is the first full length investigation of this protection. It begins by examining the privilege from its inception in around 1095, and its development and consolidation through to 1222. It then moves on to illustrate how this privilege operated in practice through the appointments of regency governments and close communication with both the papacy and local ecclesiastical officials, centring on the rich crusading evidence from Flanders, Champagne and the Kingdom of France. While the protection privilege has been seen as unwieldy and over ambitious, close analysis of particular cases and individuals reveals that not only were regents well aware of their privileged status, but that the papacy could directly intervene when its protection was contravened. Описание: In the pallium the medieval papacy created a mechanism of control over the far-flung bishops of the Latin church, a prerogative by which the popes shared honor and power with local prelates—and simultaneously wielded power over them. Contributing to the sway and oversight of the Roman church, this vestment became part of the machinery of centralization that helped produce the high medieval papal monarchy. The pallium was effective because it was a giŸft with strings attached. This band of white wool encircling the shoulders had been a papal insigne and liturgical vestment since late antiquity. It grew in prominence when the popes began to bestow it regularly on other bishops as a mark of distinction and a sign of their bond to the Roman church. Bonds ofWool analyzes how, through adroit manipulation, this giftŸ came to function as an instrument of papal influence. It explores an abundant array of evidence from diverse genres—including chronicles and letters, saints’ lives and canonical collections, polemical treatises and liturgical commentaries, and hundreds of papal privileges—stretching from the eighth century to the thirteenth and representing nearly every region of Western Europe. These sources reveal that the papal conferral of the pallium was an occasion for intervening in local churches throughout the West and a means of examining, approving, and even disciplining key bishops, who were eventually required to request the pallium from Rome. The history of the pallium provides an enlightening window on medieval culture. Through it one can perceive how medieval society expressed beliefs and relationships through artifacts and customs, and one can retrieve the aims and attitudes underlying medieval rituals and symbols. Following the story of this simple material object sheds light on some of the ways medieval people structured their society, exercised authority, and communicated ideas and values.

Описание: This cultural history of papal authority in late antiquity focuses on the late Roman household, providing a new interpretation of the Roman church and its bishops during a critical period of development. Moving beyond traditional histories of the `rise of the papacy`, this study argues that Rome`s bishops adopted the ancient elite household as a model of good government for leading the church.
