In 1986, after the international success of Towards a Philosophy of Photography, Vil m Flusser started to publish regularly in Artforum Magazine, New York. The book Artforum // Essays gathers together for the first time all twenty-eight essays, both published and unpublished, which Flusser wrote for the magazine until his tragic death in 1991.
The fundamental question that Vil m Flusser asks in this series of short provocative essays, and which he explores in most of his literary production, is this: can we really make such a clear distinction between aesthetics, epistemology and ethics as forms of knowledge production? And if through a phenomenological analysis we discover that indeed the boundaries of these fields of human production are not so well defined, then what are the implications for us of such an analysis? Are we already engaging in different modes of cultural production (in its widest sense) but are not yet fully aware of it? His analyses are posited within a contemporary discussion in relation to both the schisms and confluences between art, philosophy and science, but also questioning the very definition we give to these fields of human cultural production.
The essays are accompanied by thirty-two colour images of artworks by internationally renowned artists, curated by Martha Schwendener from the collection of images originally published with the essays in Artforum.

Has there been a shift in our concept of immateriality? In Immaterialism, Vil m Flusser explores some of the signs that point towards a cultural shift in relation to what we regard as immaterial. A shift which he considers fundamental for the understanding of the wider cultural changes we experience today. First published in Portuguese, as an essay in 1987 in the Boletim da Sociedade Brasileira de Hist ria da Ci ncia, it was subsequently translated by the author into German and English. This edition presents Flusser's own English version of the text set as a visual poem by the artist Chagrin. This book is the first title of the Metatext series by Metaflux, edited by Rodrigo Maltez Novaes.

Originally written in both English and French, The Surprising Phenomenon of Human Communication is a series of twelve essays that VilEm Flusser delivered as lectures in Aix-en-Provence, France, on several subjects ranging from communication media, memory, symbols, meaning, models, art, cybernetics, the Bible, and Brigitte Bardot.
Although written in 1975, this early phenomenological study of changing aesthetic, ethical, and epistemological models, and of the current fundamental revolution in the structure of human communication, is a visionary and provocative polemic that can help us understand, or at least, gain a better view of what is happening in the world around us today: big data, centralised media power, mass media conglomerates, political aesthetics etc.
Unpublished for almost forty years, The Surprising Phenomenon of Human Communication, now published for the first time, edited from VilEm Flusser's original English typescript, is not only an important work from the author's mid career, just before the development of his seminal theories on technical images and technical imagination, but it also forms a continuous link with his other titles of the same period: Natural: Mind, Gestures, Mutation in Human Relations, Post-History, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, and Towards a Philosophy of Photography.
How far apart are humans from animals--even the "vampire squid from hell"? Playing the scientist/philosopher/provocateur, Vilem Flusser uses this question as a springboard to dive into a literal and a philosophical ocean. "The abyss that separates us" from the vampire squid (or vampire octopus, perhaps, since Vampyroteuthis infernalis inhabits its own phylogenetic order somewhere between the two) "is incomparably smaller than that which separates us from extraterrestrial life, as imagined in science fiction and sought by astrobiologists," Flusser notes at the outset of the expedition.
Part scientific treatise, part spoof, part philosophical discourse, part fable, Vampyroteuthis Infernalis gives its author ample room to ruminate on human--and nonhuman--life. Considering the human condition along with the vampire squid/octopus condition seems appropriate because "we are both products of an absurd coincidence . . . we are poorly programmed beings full of defects," Flusser writes. Among other things, "we are both banished from much of life's domain: it into the abyss, we onto the surfaces of the continents. We have both lost our original home, the beach, and we both live in constrained conditions."
Thinking afresh about the life of an "other"--as different from ourselves as the vampire squid/octopus--complicates the linkages between animality and embodiment. Odd, and strangely compelling, Vampyroteuthis Infernalis offers up a unique posthumanist philosophical understanding of phenomenology and opens the way for a non-philosophy of life.
