Описание: A compelling and revisionist account of the economic, literary and social history of Florence in the immediate aftermath of the Black Death. Organised around Petrarch`s `war` against the Ubaldini of 1349-1350, by connecting warfare with the plague narrative, William Caferro offers an important contribution to the history of Renaissance Florence.

Описание: The powerful influence of Petrarch on the development of Renaissance vernacular poetry has long been recognized as one of the major factors in early modern cultural history; this work provides a far more comprehensive catalogue of the direct evidence for that influence in England than any yet available. Following the model of Boswell's Dante's Fame in England (1999), it offers an itemized presentation, year by year, of printed citations, translations, and allusions, with complete bibliographical information, quotations of the relevant passages, and brief commentary. The most fully studied aspect of Petrarch's influence, his love poetry as a model for imitation, remains paramount: a model by turns slavishly imitated, ruthlessly mocked, and searchingly reworked, sometimes all at the same time. But the significance of other aspects of his legacy are also documented, with new fullness: notably his Latin prose works-especially his encyclopedic moral treatise On the Remedies of Both Kinds of Fortune, popular throughout the period-and his polemics against the Avignon papacy, which earned him a strong reputation in England as an angry moral prophet and champion of what would become the Protestant cause. The picture here presented provides new texture and complexity for any further discussion of Petrarch in the English Renaissance.

Описание: Omeros, a transatlantic Homeric epic poem, is widely considered the masterwork of Nobel laureate Derek Walcott and one of the most important pieces of postcolonial Caribbean literature. Yet it is also Walcott’s most challenging work. In Omeros, Walcott constructs strategic layers of allusions and references that occasionally escape even seasoned scholars. This guide provides exhaustive textual annotations and is the ideal resource for mapping the intricate matrix of allusions in this influential poem. Using extensive research in St. Lucia, the birthplace of Walcott, Maria McGarrity illuminates a wide range of references that include classical literature, world mythologies, colonial politics, modern painting, the Caribbean contexts of Omeros, modern epics, the African elements of West Indian culture, and the critical African nexus within global cultures. In addition to extensive annotations and summaries of the poem’s seven books, McGarrity draws attention to the lyricism of Walcott’s language, the amazing originality of the poem’s structure, and the stunning gaps that are spanned when far-removed allusions unexpectedly relate. When the allusions in Omeros are fully understood, these points of connection usher readers into a fascinating continuum of time and place in which the rich historical past is wrapped up in the contemporary present.

Описание:

Pietro Bembo was both witness and participant at the centre of the Italian Renaissance. A celebrated writer, an antiquarian, a man of exquisite taste, and a lover of women and beauty, he was to win both the laurels of a poet and the scarlet robes of a Cardinal. Born in Venice, he travelled to and resided in nearly all the Italian courts, from Lorenzo il Magnifico's Florence to Ferrara, Urbino and Rome. As Latin secretary to Pope Leo X and a lover of Lucrezia Borgia, with whom he exchanged passionate letters in great secrecy, he was an intimate of both the Medicis and the Borgias. His public writing set the style of Italian literary language, and his appreciations of Dante and Petrarch were influential across the whole of Europe. A patron and friend of many of the most refined artists of the Renaissance, from Raphael to Cellini, Bembo also lived through an age of scientific enquiry -- as a boy, he was fascinated with the volcanic processes of Mount Etna -- and the dawn of print culture, in which he also played a role as one of the first contemporary writers to be printed in movable type.

Faini's new biography, commissioned by the Fondation Barbier-Mueller pour l' tude de la po sie italienne de la Renaissance, aims to recapture, for a general readership, Bembo's unique experience during the most glorious and tormented years of the Italian Renaissance.
