Описание: Winner of the 2016 Anthropology in Media Award from the American Anthropological Association  The 2010 earthquake in Haiti was one of the deadliest disasters in modern history, sparking an international aid response-with pledges and donations of $16 billion-that was exceedingly generous. But now, five years later, that generous aid has clearly failed. In Humanitarian Aftershocks in Haiti, anthropologist Mark Schuller captures the voices of those involved in the earthquake aid response, and they paint a sharp, unflattering view of the humanitarian enterprise.     Schuller led an independent study of eight displaced-persons camps in Haiti, compiling more than 150 interviews ranging from Haitian front-line workers and camp directors to foreign humanitarians and many displaced Haitian people. The result is an insightful account of why the multi-billion-dollar aid response not only did little to help but also did much harm, triggering a range of unintended consequences, rupturing Haitian social and cultural institutions, and actually increasing violence, especially against women. The book shows how Haitian people were removed from any real decision-making, replaced by a top-down, NGO-dominated system of humanitarian aid, led by an army of often young, inexperienced foreign workers. Ignorant of Haitian culture, these aid workers unwittingly enacted policies that triggered a range of negative results. Haitian interviewees also note that the NGOs “planted the flag,” and often tended to “just do something,” always with an eye to the “photo op” (in no small part due to the competition over funding). Worse yet, they blindly supported the eviction of displaced people from the camps, forcing earthquake victims to relocate in vast shantytowns that were hotbeds of violence.  Humanitarian Aftershocks in Haiti concludes with suggestions to help improve humanitarian aid in the future, perhaps most notably, that aid workers listen to-and respect the culture of-the victims of catastrophe.

Описание: In 1915, United States Marines arrived in Haiti to safeguard lives and property from the political instability of the time. While there, the Marine Corps controlled everything from finance to education, from health care to public works and built an army, “La Garde d’Haiti,” to maintain the changes it implemented. Ultimately, the decisions made by the United States about and for Haiti have indelibly shaped the development of what is generally considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.Contrary Destinies presents the story of the one hundred year relationship between the two countries. Leon Pamphile chronicles the internal, external, and natural forces that have shaped Haiti as it is today, striking a balance between the realities faced by the people on the island and the global and transnational contexts that affect their lives. He examines how American policies towards the Caribbean nation—during the Cold War and later as the United States became the sole world superpower—and the legacies of the occupation contributed to the gradual erosion of Haitian independence, culminating in a second occupation and the current United Nations peacekeeping mission.

Описание:

In September 1994 a large U.S. invasion force converged on Haiti. Years of diplomatic efforts, secret government planning, and military rehearsals on the parts of the United States and the United Nations had failed to restore to office Haiti's democratically elected, junta-deposed president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and now invasion was imminent. Poised for action and mere minutes from striking, President Bill Clinton stunned military commanders when he announced a drastic change of plan: a peaceful cooperation with an illegal government.

In Eyewitness to Chaos Walter E. Kretchik retells the experience of this unprecedented and convoluted operation through the voices of its participants. Synthesizing accounts from a cross section of military officials, Kretchik unveils the little-known inner workings of government and military planning and the real-world quandaries of operational execution faced by those involved. The thirty-seven interviewees provide insight into the many facets of the operation: strategic and operational planning; intelligence gathering; multinational force design; medical and legal complications; communication concerns; contracting and logistics; ethnic, cultural, and historical considerations; mission execution; and language barriers. What emerges is a new perspective on this attempt to secure a brighter future for Haiti's people.

Walter E. Kretchik is professor emeritus of history at Western Illinois University. He is the author of U.S. Army Doctrine: From the American Revolution to the War on Terror.

Описание:

In We Dream Together Anne Eller breaks with dominant narratives of conflict between the Dominican Republic and Haiti by tracing the complicated history of Dominican emancipation and independence between 1822 and 1865. Eller moves beyond the small body of writing by Dominican elites that often narrates Dominican nationhood to craft inclusive, popular histories of identity, community, and freedom, summoning sources that range from trial records and consul reports to poetry and song. Rethinking Dominican relationships with their communities, the national project, and the greater Caribbean, Eller shows how popular anticolonial resistance was anchored in a rich and complex political culture. Haitians and Dominicans fostered a common commitment to Caribbean freedom, the abolition of slavery, and popular democracy, often well beyond the reach of the state. By showing how the island's political roots are deeply entwined, and by contextualizing this history within the wider Atlantic world, Eller demonstrates the centrality of Dominican anticolonial struggles for understanding independence and emancipation throughout the Caribbean and the Americas.

Описание:

When Joegodson D?ralcin? was still a small child, his parents leftrural Haiti to resettle in the rapidly growing zones of Port-au-Prince.As his family entered the city in 1986, Duvalier and his dictatorshipexited. Haitians, once terrorized under Duvalier’s reign, wereliberated and emboldened to believe that they could take control oftheir lives. But how? Joining hundreds of thousands of other peasantstrying to adjust to urban life, Joegodson and his family sought workand a means of survival. But all they found was low-waged assemblyplant jobs of the sort to which the repressive Duvalier regime hadopened Haiti’s doors—the combination of flexible capitaland cheap labour too attractive to multinational manufacturers to beoverlooked. With the death of his mother, Joegodson was placed in hisuncle’s care, and so began a childhood of starvation, endlesslabour, and abuse.

In honest, reflective prose, Joegodson—now a fatherhimself— allows us to walk in the ditches of Cit? Soleil, to hidefrom the macoutes under the bed, to feel the ache of an emptystomach. But, most importantly, he provides an account of life in Haitifrom a perspective that is rarely heard. Free of sentimentality andhackneyed clich?s, his narrative explores the spirituality of Vodou,Catholicism, and Protestantism, describes the harrowing day of the 2010earthquake and its aftermath, and illustrates the inner workings ofMINUSTAH. Written with Canadian historian Paul Jackson—Joegodsontelling his story in Creole, Jackson translating, the two of them thenreviewing and reworking—the memoir is a true collaboration, thestruggle of two people from different lands and vastly differentcircumstances to arrive at a place of mutual understanding. In theprocess, they have given us an unforgettable account of a countrydetermined to survive, and on its own terms.
