Описание:
A journalist once called Under Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson “the toughest man in Washington” for his fervid efforts in managing U.S. mobilisation in World War II. The World War I Memoirs of Robert P. Patterson: A Captain in the Great War recounts Patterson’s own formative military experiences in the First World War.

Written in the years following the conflict, this is a remarkable rendering of what it was like to be an infantry line officer during the so-called Great War. Patterson started his military career as a twenty-seven-year-old, barely-trained captain in the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.). He was part of the 306th Infantry Regiment of New York’s famous 77th “Statue of Liberty” Division from July to November 1918. In this detailed account, Patterson describes in understated yet vivid prose just how raw and unprepared American soldiers were for the titanic battles on the Western Front. Patterson downplays his near-death experience in a fierce firefight that earned him and several of his men from Company F the Distinguished Service Cross. His depiction of the brutal Meuse-Argonne battle is haunting—the drenching cold rains, the omnipresent barbed wire, deep fog-filled ravines, the sweet stench of mustard gas, chattering German machine-guns, crashing artillery shells, and even a rare hot meal to be savored.

Dealing with more than just combat, Patterson writes of the friendships and camaraderie among the officers and soldiers of different ethnic and class backgrounds who made up the “melting pot division” of the 77th. He betrays little of the post war disillusionment that afflicted some members of the “Lost Generation.” Editor J. Garry Clifford’s introduction places Patterson and his actions in historical context and illuminates how Patterson applied lessons learned from the Great War to his later service as assistant secretary, under secretary, and secretary of war from 1940 to 1947.
|This memoir illuminates key aspects of the war experience: the enthusiasm for fighting, tensions with officers, tedium with regard to noncombatant work, the variety of trench experiences, the sharp learning curve that the army underwent on the ground, and the confusing nature of combat for ground troops. As the centennial of the war approaches this well-annotated memoir that connects Pattersons individual experiences to the larger U.S. experience of the war will appeal to general readers and specialists alike. - Jennifer D. Описание: Suffused with the romance of flight and the harsh realities of aerial combat, Rogers’s letters to his fiancée, Isabelle Young, vividly detail his wartime experiences against a lethal and elusive opponent exemplified by the likes of Baron von Richthofen’s Flying Circus. Of the three hundred-plus Americans who joined the British air corps in 1917, only Rogers and two dozen other volunteers became “aces” by shooting down five or more German planes. He himself claimed six “kills” in fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne, the Somme Offensive, Cambrai, Ypres-Lys, and six other major engagements.

Описание: THE TWENTY ETUDES FOR PIANO were composed during the years from 1991 to 2012. Their final configuration into Book 1 and Book 2 was determined by the music itself in the course of its composition.

Book 1 (Etudes 1-10) had a twin objective - to explore a variety of tempi, textures and piano techniques. At the same time it was meant to serve as a pedagogical tool by which I would improve my piano playing. In these two ways, Book 1 succeeded very well. I learned a great deal about the piano and in the course of learning the music, I became a better player.

New projects came along and interrupted the work on the Etudes for several years. Perhaps for that reason, when I took up work with the Etudes again I found the music was following a new path. Though I had settled questions of piano technique for myself in Book 1, the music in Book 2 quickly began to suggest a series of new adventures in harmony and structure.

In this way, Books 1 and 2, taken together, suggest a real trajectory that includes a broad range of music and technical ideas.

In the end, the Etudes are meant to be appreciated not only by the general listener, but especially by those who have the ability and patience to learn, play and perform the music themselves.

Описание: Two brothers. Different armies When war broke out in August 1914, University of Sydney medical graduate Nigel Boulton was training as a paediatrician in London and he promptly joined the Royal Army Medical Corps of the British Expeditionary Force. Back in Sydney, his younger brother Stephen left the Commonwealth Bank's head office in January 1915 to enlist as an Artillery Gunner with the Australian Imperial Force. Two national identities Both men were born in Australia of English parents. Both attended the British Orphan Asylum at Slough in England and The King's School at Parramatta in Australia. Which country was home? Two distinct voices Anglophile Nigel (Dearest Mother) has a strategic and medical view of the war. Aussie Stephen (My dear Matee) tells his day-to-day story of front-line artillery life, the ravages of dysentery and the trials of artillery officer training at Lord's in London as he progresses to the rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. An overview of 1914-1918 The Boulton brothers' letters to their widowed mother living in Sydney sweep from the outbreak of hostilities in Europe through Egypt and Gallipoli to Pozieres and other major artillery battles on the Western Front, to the withdrawal of Australian troops in early October 1918, to the occupation forces entering Germany in December 1918. A lesson for us in the practice of gratitude It's rare to find a set of letters like these. The story of the Boulton brothers in the service of their country will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Six more hours would have changed everything. Author Biography: Louise Wilson has a passion for history, mystery and romance, so no-one has ever needed to tell her to 'Go and get yourself a life'. Born and raised in the northern beaches area of Sydney, she's lived in two Australian country towns (Dubbo and Yea), Papua New Guinea, London and Hong Kong before settling in Melbourne. She's been a high school mathematics teacher, an agricultural economist, a management information specialist, the manager of a foreign exchange department and a director of a merchant bank. She's also volunteered with many community groups with a focus on education. She often helps her daughter who has two sets of twins born 14 months apart. Now she's come full circle, back to exploring an old love of history dating from her high school days. Intrigued by Australian history, she's discovered some fascinating forebears who've helped create that history, including 'Robert Forrester, First Fleeter'. He's the subject of one of her three acclaimed books about early convict settlers of the beautiful Hawkesbury district near Sydney. All three books have received awards from the independent judges of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies (AIGS). Louise loves to bring new aspects of her country's history to life, as she's done with her latest book 'Brothers in Arms'. It's based on the valuable and unique WW1 correspondence of two brothers in different armies, Australian and British, plus her own trademark meticulous research. The result is an emotionally-engaging start-to-finish story of the Great War, not to be missed by the general reader and the specialist historian."

Описание: Prisoners of the Sumatra Railway is the first book to detail the experiences of British former prisoners of war (POWs) who were forced to construct a railway across Sumatra during the Japanese occupation. It is also the first study to be undertaken of the life-writing of POWs held captive by the Japanese during the Second World War, and the transgenerational responses in Britain to this period of captivity.

This book brings to light previously unpublished materials, including:

- Exceptionally rare and detailed diaries, notebooks and letters from the railway

- Memoirs from Sumatra, including detailed recollections and post-war statements written by key personnel on the railway, such as Medical Officers and interpreters

- Remarkable original artwork created by POWs on Sumatra

- Contemporaneous photographs taken inside the camps

Employing theories of life-writing, memory and war representation, including transgenerational transmission, Lizzie Oliver focuses particularly on what these documents can tell us about how former POWs tried to share, preserve and make sense of their experiences. It is a wholly original study that is of great value to Second World War scholars and anyone interested in 20th-century Southeast Asian history or war and memory.

Описание: The Great War is still seen as a mostly European war. The Middle Eastern theatre is, at best, considered a sideshow written from the western perspective. This book fills a gap in the literature by giving an insight through annotated translations from Ottoman memoirs of actors who witnessed the last few years of Turkish presence in the Arab lands.
