Автор: KING, ROSAMOND S Название: Island Bodies: Transgressive Sexualities in the Caribbean Imagination ISBN: 0813049806 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780813049809 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 82230.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: In Island Bodies, Rosamond King examines sexualities, violence, and repression in the Caribbean experience. She analyses the sexual norms and expectations portrayed in Caribbean and diaspora litera¬ture, music, film, and popular culture to show how many individuals contest traditional roles by manoeuvring within and/or trying to change their society’s binary gender systems. She skilfully demon¬strates that these transgressions better represent Caribbean culture than the “official” representations perpetuated by governmental elites and often codified into laws that reinforce patriarchal, hetero¬sexual stereotypes.Unique in its breadth and its multilingual and multidisciplinary approach, Island Bodies addresses homosexuality, interracial rela¬tions, transgender people, and women’s sexual agency in Dutch, Francophone, Anglophone, and Hispanophone works of Caribbean literature.Ultimately King reveals that despite the varied national specificity, differing colonial legacies, and linguistic diversity across the islands, there are striking similarities in the ways Caribglobal cultures at¬tempt to restrict sexuality and in the ways individuals explore and transgress those boundaries.
African-derived religious traditions like Santer a and Vodou have long been a site of political, cultural and social resistance in the Caribbean. Through his focus on the body as the juncture between the physical and spiritual planes, Humphrey's analysis of a number of Caribbean novels and plays foregrounds the complex nature of women's negotiation of religious, social and political life as participants in these marginalized religious communities. Examining works from authors such as Cuban playwright Eugenio Hern ndez Espinosa (1936-), Haitian novelists Kettly Mars (1958-) and Marie Chauvet (1916-1973), and Cuban-Puerto Rican writer Mayra Montero (1952-), he demonstrates the manner in which the worldviews offered by Santer a and Vodou permit the divisions within and between concepts such as gender, sexuality, womanhood, space and nation to be transcended. As a result, not only do these narratives resist and subvert hegemonic and patriarchal discourses, but also provide a means through which the voice of the marginalized can be heard.
Paul Humphrey is Assistant Professor in World Languages and Cultures at Monmouth University, New Jersey.

Автор: Hartung Название: Ageing, Gender, and Illness in Anglophone Literature ISBN: 1138858501 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781138858503 Издательство: Taylor&Francis Рейтинг: Цена: 163330.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: This study establishes age as a category of literary history, delineating age in its interaction with gender and narrative genre. Based on the historical premise that the view of ageing as a burden emerges as a specific narrative in the late eighteenth century, the study highlights how the changing experience of ageing is shaped by that of gender. By reading the Bildungsroman as a 'coming of age' novel, the book asks how the telling of a life in time affects individual age narratives. Bringing together the different perspectives of age and disability studies, the book argues that illness is already an important issue in the Bildungsroman's narratives of ageing. This theoretical stance provides new interpretations of canonical novels, visiting authors such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Samuel Beckett, and Jonathan Franzen. Drawing on the link between age and illness in the Bildungsroman's age narratives, the genre of 'dementia narrative' is presented as one of the directions which the Bildungsroman takes after its classical period. Applying these theoretical perspectives to canonical novels of the nineteenth century and to the new genre of 'dementia narrative', the volume also provides new insights into literary and genre history. This book introduces a new theoretical approach to cultural age studies and offers a comprehensive analysis of the connection between narratology, literary theory, gender and age studies.
