Описание: This thorough and informative book is designed to guide music therapy students, young clinicians, and educators in techniques for developing a rich, varied, engaging, and healthy clinical voice for use in music therapy practice. Because the voice is so individual and unique, the material leads each music therapist on a very personal journey of exploration and discovery. Through practical information and exercises, readers will learn how to make the most of their own authentic voice, while maintaining good vocal health. It is the enhancement of each therapist’s authentic voice that is the aim of this guide. However, within each real and authentic voice there are unexamined and unexplored depths which can be enhanced through knowledge, practice, and reflection. The therapist’s authentic voice then becomes a valuable tool in which the client can find assurances of trust, empathy, and hope. The book initially examines historical and contemporary music therapy literature on voicework practices to discover voice qualities recommended for effective vocal interventions. Chapter Two begins the journey to discover or uncover the authentic voice through looking at the connection between the mind, body, and voice including genetics, culture, identity, environment, exposure, and experience. Chapter Three will study the physical mechanisms that create the voice including how the entire body contributes to initiating, making, and sustaining sounds. In Chapter Four, the critical nature of vocal health will take center stage. Current researchers have shown the importance of good vocal practices to sustain music therapists' ability to perform their job and this is one of the prime motivators for adding this knowledge base to the music therapy literature. Practical and immediate suggestions and solutions for maintaining vocal well-being will be outlined. The following ten chapters are a multi-faceted and comprehensive guide to creating vocal variety and richness. Exercises will be organized by looking at how the voice can be expanded across the range of musical elements - pitch, intervals, melody, phrasing, timbre, texture, articulation, rhythm, tempo, meter, dynamics, and structure. Guidance in forming sounds, making noises, using words and chant, and rhythmic speech will also be included. To organize and shape this journey of the voice, the book uses three levels of learning throughout: Examine It; Explore It; Experience It. The Examine Itlevel provides suggested readings or web-based searches to better understand and integrate voice work into music therapy training and practice. In Explore It, assignments will help the reader recognize the very intimate connection between the ideas studied in the Examine It sections and personal identity. Written reflections or journaling will help give clarity to issues or accomplishments. The Experience It level gives exercises to practice the concepts presented through actually using the voice and body. All of the exercises are specifically designed with the challenges of real-world music therapy work in mind.Additional resources include a glossary of terms, worksheets for personalized skill development plans, notated songs to practice specific skills, and an extensive reference list.

Описание: The studies collected in this book fall into four chief thematic areas of research on Fryderyk Chopin’s life, stylistic changes, creative output, and musical reception. The first one is devoted to the origins of the composer’s artistic formation in the context of his connections with the Main School of Music at the Royal University of Warsaw. The second thematic area is tied to the problem of Chopin’s musical language and transformation of his individual style. The third group of studies concentrates on issues in Chopin’s musical aesthetics, while the fourth and final one is devoted to the questions of composer’s reception in the 19th-century musical culture in light of the practice of musical transcriptions at the time.

Описание: Performance is a forum for social action, embodied interaction and shared authority. Recently, as the various acts and agencies surrounding a performance have become the target of scholarly interest, the complex split between theory and practice has been challenged, as has the idea of a singular, disembodied authorial ownership of the socio-material meanings surrounding performance. The Embodiment of Authority approaches performance, issues of authority and negotiated knowledge production through multi-material research data and interdisciplinary methods. The book discusses the relationship between authorial questions and performances via the following topics: shared authorities, ontologies of art work, diverse roles of rehearsals in the performance process, and embodied knowledge.

Описание:

Bach and Tuning is strictly concerned with the identification of a historically accurate tuning paradigm that applies to the great majority of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music. Once Bach has his personal tuning aesthetic acknowledged, a new dimension of meaning is invoked in performance through the intended interplay of diverse musical intervals. This new narrative lays bare Bach’s mental calculations regarding his idealized intonation. Bach, the true chromatic composer of the Baroque, was the scion of a great music family. Likewise, Andreas Werckmeister was the bright star in a neighboring musical family, only a generation earlier. Bach and Tuning connects the valuable tuning contribution made by Werckmeister to Bach’s musical masterpieces.

These songs can be used as a basis for developing improvisations as well as providing therapists with the motivation to write and create their own unique songs and arrangements. Описание: Companion to Song Resources for Music Therapists, this collection of compositions and themes for improvising is intended to provide music therapists with innovative ideas for creating music in a therapy setting. Based on the belief that aesthetic quality should be equal to non-musical clinical goals, the music presented is essentially artistic. The text is divided into seven parts: compositions, improvising with orchestral instruments, themes in world styles, themes in contemporary styles, receptive themes, levels of interaction, and interval explorations. The richness of material presented, from around the world, bears testament to the growing need for music therapy to expand its musical horizons. The different sections of the book have been created to provide music therapists with a wealth of new musical material. From the use of orchestral instruments, to improvised receptive themes, and the practical application of rap and hip-hop this book is contemporary and ground breaking. Each section focuses on a specific musical or clinical resource and can be adapted for different situations, including work with children, adolescents, adults, long term and end-of-life care. It is our hope that this volume will also be of use for community music therapists, medical music therapists, as well as a source of inspiration for music psychotherapists. This book then, offers new approaches and the potential for current and international musical trends to affect present-day clinical practice.

Описание: The symphony retained its primacy as the most prestigious large-scale orchestral form throughout the first half of the twentieth century, particularly in Britain, Russia and the United States. Likewise, Australian composers produced a steady stream of symphonies throughout the period from Federation (1901) through to the end of the 1950s. Stylistically, these works ranged from essays in late nineteenth-century romanticism, twentieth-century nationalism, neo-classicism and near-atonality. Australian symphonies were most prolific during the 1950s, with 36 local entries in the 1951 Commonwealth Jubilee Symphony competition. This extensive repertoire was overshadowed by the emergence of a new generation of composers and critics during the 1960s who tended to regard older Australian music as old-fashioned and derivative. The Australian Symphony from Federation to 1960 is the first study of this neglected genre and has four aims: firstly, to show the development of symphonic composition in Australia from Federation to 1960; secondly, to highlight the achievement of the main composers who wrote symphonies; thirdly, to advocate the restoration and revival of this repertory; and, lastly, to take a step towards a recasting of the narrative of Australian concert music from Federation to the present. In particular, symphonies by Marshall-Hall, Hart, Bainton, Hughes, Le Gallienne and Morgan emerge as works of particular note.

Описание: Despite the musical and social roles they play in many parts of the world, wind bands have not attracted much interest from sociologists. The Sociology of Wind Bands seeks to fill this gap in research by providing a sociological account of this musical universe as it stands now. Based on a qualitative and quantitative survey conducted in northeastern France, the authors present a vivid description of the orchestras, the backgrounds and practices of their musicians, and the repertoires they play. Their multi-level analysis, ranging from the cultural field to the wind music subfield and to everyday life relationships within bands and local communities, sheds new light on the social organisation, meanings and functions of a type of music that is all too often taken for granted. Yet they go further than merely portraying a musical genre. As wind music is routinely neglected and socially defined in terms of its poor musical quality or even bad taste, the book addresses the thorny issue of the effects of cultural hierarchy and domination. It proposes an imaginative and balanced framework which, beyond the specific case of wind music, is an innovative contribution to the sociology of lowbrow culture.
