Описание: Material Difference: Modernism and the Allegories of Discourse argues that deconstruction can be employed in conjunction with the historically-oriented approach to cultural experience that is favored by Critical Theory. The two discourses that inform this comparative study situate Modernism between evolving traditions that begin with Hegel and Nietzsche, leading on to Adorno’s commitment to philosophical aesthetics and Derrida’s concern for writing (ecriture). Interrelated discussions of eight major authors, working in four different languages, are presented to show how allegorical Modernism foreshadows the possibility of cultural history. Joyce, Kafka, Malraux, Rilke, and Stevens are among the authors discussed in this book. The notion of material difference allows literature to be redefined in semiotic terms and demonstrates how the allegorical imagination mediates between art and time.

While histories of literacy and colonialism have emphasized the experiences of Native Americans, as students in missionary schools or as parties to treacherous treaties, captivity narratives reveal what literacy meant to colonists among Indians. Colonial captives treasured the written word in order to distinguish themselves from their Native captors and to affiliate with their distant cultural communities. Their narratives suggest that Indians recognized this value, sometimes with benevolence: repeatedly, they presented colonists with books.

In this way and others, Scriptures, saintly lives, and even Shakespeare were introduced into diverse experiences of colonial captivity. What other scholars have understood more simply as textual parallels, Newman argues instead may reflect lived allegories; the identification of one's own unfolding story with the stories of others. In an authoritative, wide-ranging study that encompasses the foundational New England narratives, accounts of martyrdom and cultural conversion in New France and Mohawk country in the 1600s, and narratives set in Cherokee territory and the Great Lakes region during the late eighteenth century, Newman opens up old tales to fresh, thought-provoking interpretations.

Описание: Forschungsinitiativen zum Thema Avantgarde und Moderne nehmen in der europaischen Forschungslandschaft weiterhin zu. Die experimentellen Literaturen und die Kunste in Europa zwischen ca. 1850 und 1950 und ihre Nachwirkungen sind als Lehr- und Forschungsbereiche an den europaischen Forschungsinstitutionen und in den Lehrplanen heutzutage nicht mehr wegzudenken. Avantgarde und Moderne haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu unterschiedlichen, aber mehrfach miteinander verzahnten Forschungsgebieten entwickelt. Innerhalb der franzosischen und deutschen akademischen Welt bleibt der Sammelbegriff „modernism" weniger gelaufig – „die (klassische) Moderne" und „modernite" fungieren hier als nahe liegende Aquivalente zu demjenigen, was im internationalen Kontext als eine zeitliche und raumliche Ko-Okkurenz kunstlerischer Ausdrucksformen und asthetischer Theorien namhaft gemacht werden kann, die ungefahr zwischen 1850 und 1950 angesiedelt werden kann. Auf ahnliche Weise entfaltet die Bezeichnung „Avantgarde" eine Reihe haufig widerspruchlicher Konnotationen. Fur manche bedeutet die Avantgarde den radikalsten experimentellen Bruch der Kunste und Literaturen mit den Darstellungs- und Erzahlkonventionen des 19. Jahrhundert: Im fruhen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert zeugen davon Avantgardebewegungen wie Futurismus, Expressionismus, Dada und Surrealismus, d.h. Stromungen, die als die „heroische" Phase der Avantgarde bezeichnet werden konnen. Fur andere gehort die Avantgarde zu einer kulturellen und konzeptuellen Ordnung, die sich weitgehend von der 'modernistischen' unterscheidet oder sogar abhebt: Die avantgardistischen Experimente ab den funfziger Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts kommen in dieser Hinsicht weitgehend ohne modernistische Begleiterscheinung aus. Die Buchreihe Studien zur Europaischen Avantgarde und Moderne mochte der Kompliziertheit der unterschiedlichen europaischen Forschungstraditionen gerecht werden und strebt danach, die breite linguistische, terminologische und methodologische Vielfalt abzudecken. Anhand einer zweijahrlichen Sammlung von Beitragen in englischer, franzosischer und deutscher Sprache mochte die Reihe nicht nur die franzosisch-, deutsch- und englischsprachigen, sondern auch die nord-, sud-, zentral- und osteuropaischen Ergebnisse der Avantgarde- und Moderne-Forschung einbeziehen. Die Reihe sammelt die neuesten und ertragreichsten Beitrage zur Forschung und widmet sich der Erforschung der gesamten europaischen Avantgarde und Moderne, ihrer Vorlaufer und ihrem Nachklang im Laufe des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. How is it that new works or new forms are possible within the rule-governed orders of history, language use, or the social? How are new works in turn recognizable to already-existing institutions? Tracing the relationship between literature and the problem of newness back to a set of concerns first articulated in early German romanticism, this book goes on to mount a critique of romantic tendencies in contemporary criticism in order, ultimately, to develop an original theory of literary production.
