Описание: What is it like to be YOUNG, GIFTED AND WORKING CLASS in contemporary England? How do working class family values support high educational achievement? What do researchers and policy makers have to learn about giftedness from working class families? These provocative questions are explored in this ground-breaking book. Most studies of giftedness focus on the characteristics of individuals, and draw upon psychological frameworks to understand them. Participants in most gifted education programmes are recruited disproportionately from the higher social classes. Sceptical of the concept of giftedness, Mazzoli Smith and Campbell question conventional methodologies, using a narrative approach to understand how four families of working class origins, each with a gifted child, construct their values in relation to education and social class. They explore the influence of their family histories, cultural values and life styles upon educational engagement and achievement. The authors show that gifted education policies are poorly matched to the values of these families and argue that much research into giftedness has been flawed by social and cultural discrimination. They propose an agenda for change in research paradigms in the giftedness field, which should be characterized by interdisciplinarity and more culturally relative conceptions of giftedness.

Описание: When today’s gifted and talented young people emerge into adulthood will they be able to overcome some enormous 21st-century problems that are pushing us toward large-scale socioeconomic devastation? Will they be able to capitalize on unprecedented opportunities that can lead to widespread prosperity and fulfillment? This book explores these questions while yielding insights from many of the world’s leading scholars of giftedness and talent development. Until now there has been inadequate understanding of 21st-century trends and issues that influence the gifted and talented. The book provides some clarity by establishing a big-picture, interdisciplinary overview of the socioeconomic, cultural, and technological pressures emerging from 21st-century globalization and describing some ways in which those pressures simultaneously suppress, distort, and invigorate the discovery of aspirations and the development of talents. Throughout the volume, prominent scholars of gifted education and talent development use their impressive knowledge bases to clarify how we can adjust our thoughts and actions in order to give ourselves the best possible chances for success in this complex world.

Описание: Creativity is what separates good scientists from truly great scientists who can open up new avenues of investigation. Although the interaction of creativity with giftedness in the scientific arena is often overlooked, it is well established that successful scientists are intellectually gifted, and the idea that creativity is important to the successful scientist was eloquently described by Albert Einstein (1931). “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” Thus, gifted learners must be taught how to create new postulates, to think logically, and to reason rather than to be taught strategies to memorize a set of potentially irrelevant facts. This work by a diverse field of international authors focuses discussion on the interplay of giftedness and creativity within the scientific enterprise and provides evidence and theoretical constructs which can be used to adjust learning environments to be conducive to the development of superior scientists. The book also explores the interplay of creativity and giftedness for scientists in a historical context, describes the importance of creativity in scientific advances, and examines the impact of the current educational system and various cultural expectations on diverse gifted and creative science students including those with special needs. Furthermore, the Interplay of Creativity and Giftedness in Science provides a mechanism for communicating exemplary examples of programs, which have successfully combined creativity, giftedness and science, across linguistic, cultural, racial, geographic, socioeconomic, and situational educational settings.
