Education, Disability and Inclusion: A Family Struggle against an Excluding School

Автор: Ignacio Calderon-Almendros, Sabina Habegger-Lardoeyt
Название: Education, Disability and Inclusion: A Family Struggle against an Excluding School

Описание: The book describes the experience of Rafael Calderon-Almendros (the first person with Down syndrome to obtain a professional music degree in Spain) and his family. A confrontation arose with his school at the end of his compulsory secondary education stage. After Rafael had been a student in the centre from the start of his education, the institution lost its vision and denied the student his rights. The school used concealed segregation strategies, legitimized by the institution and its professionals, which were almost insurmountable.However, Rafael’s family embarked on a process of Action Research, began to fight for the recognition of the right for all students to obtain a formal education. This research shows how critical analyses were born from the experiences of a representative of one of the most disadvantaged groups (disabled people), which have been rigorously recorded and evidenced. From an inclusive, engaged and radical perspective, the text presents a solid case of someone outside the able-dominated average completing his education to a high professional standard. His success is endorsed by subsequent events: Rafael passed his compulsory secondary education, the equivalent of the English Baccalaureate and his Elementary and Professional Grades of Music (ten years). He obtained the Gold Medal of Merit in Education of Andalusia and the World Down Syndrome Day Award. He was admitted to the prestigious Academy of Orchestral Studies Barenboim-Said. Rafael has nothing else to prove.Today, his example challenges many of the usual school practices and urges us to rethink the commitment of educators in stimulating the participation of the entire school community, in promoting student autonomy and the recognition of others in their human and social rights.English translation provided by Baker & McKenzie Barcelona, S.L.P. (www.bakermckenzie.com/Spain/Barcelona/) and Julian Thomas (www.textos-academicos.com).

Inclusion, Disability and Culture

Описание: This book examines some theoretical and empirical aspects about complexities of inclusion, disability and culture. It challenges the globalized technical and reductionist approach of inclusion and argues that concepts of disability and inclusion are culturally constructed. Disability and inclusion are concepts which do not define a global agenda, in the sense that one size fits all. Rather they should be seen as being completely context dependent and that they should be deconstructed with respect to specific cultural contexts, with respects to society, ethics, religion and history. The main argument of the book is that many cultural backgrounds, including Egyptians, have their own long-standing beliefs and practices which do not define or address disability in the same way as western culture. Such cultural differences in understanding disability may lead to different understandings, conceptualizations and practices of inclusion. The book articulates disability and inclusion within a socio-ethical-religious discourse based on the Islamic underpinnings of equality and differences. This discourse enhances and supports the calls for considering inclusion and disability within a cultural model that takes into account the common values about disability in any given context which consequently will affect the way educational provision is provided in that context. Finally, the book challenges the “psychological” concept of “attitude” that has been represented in the literature simply as a matter of acceptance or rejection. Inclusion, Disability and Culture shows that “attitude” is a complex and context-dependent issue that can’t be understood in isolation from the wider context within which such responses were created. Specifically, the role of the social views about disability, religious values, school cultures, educational system and structural and organizational constraints can’t be underestimated in understanding teachers’ attitudes towards a complex issue like inclusion.

Описание:

How can we support children to reach their full potential and not be constrained by gender expectations? Are gender roles fixed at birth or do they develop through experiences? Gender Diversity and Inclusion in Early Years Education introduces practitioners to key aspects of gender in the early years and explores how to ensure that children and staff teams are supported in settings that have outstanding practice.

Considering the implications of gender in the context of supporting children, families and practitioners, this book examines the theoretical contexts that surround gender identity and explores current legislation and practice in order to provide practitioners with all the information they need to develop their own work and settings in an open and equal way. Offering a wealth of practical guidance, case studies and reflective questions which link to the EYFS, chapters cover:

  • a theoretical approach to gender development;
  • current legislation and the impact on early years practice;
  • understanding gender fluidity and the way in which children express gender;
  • creating gender equality when working with children and the role of manager in creating a supportive ethos.

Including tasks, reflective points and links to useful websites and organisations, this book will be valuable reading for all early years practitioners and students that want to promote an inclusive environment for the children in their care, their families and colleagues.

Описание:

In this insightful text, the editors reflect on contributions from scholars representing Bangladesh, Greece, India, Israel, New Zealand, Switzerland, UK and USA, by showing how the majority of educational and social institutions in both developed and developing countries have failed to overcome the many barriers to an effective integrated system of education, suggesting ways as to how these barriers might be challenged.

By looking closely at the overt and covert injuries of educational and social exclusion, a variety of approaches to overcoming the consequences of those challenges is proposed, drawing together strands of social theory, research data and conceptualisations for social action.
