Описание: As of 1975, the decades long insurgency in Angola appeared to be short of its conclusion. However, with no less than three major insurgent movements fighting for supremacy, the war went on and then South Africa, USA, the Soviet Union, Zaire and Cuba became involved. Affairs like the CIA’s efforts to destabilise Angola for little else but to recoup its prestige after the catastrophic defeat in South Vietnam, or the South African military intervention in Angola – Operation Savannah – have attracted lots of public attention and are relatively well covered in related publications. On the contrary, the final stages of the Portuguese withdrawal, the military build-up of three native insurgent forces, and then the onset of the Cuban military intervention in Angola – Operation Carlotta run in 1975 and 1976 – remain largely unknown. Based on extensive research with help of Angolan and Cuban sources, the War of Intervention in Angola is providing a unique insight precisely into the latter topic. It traces the failures of the US-supported FNLA, the growth and reorganization of the MPLA into a conventional army; deployment of Cuban military contingents, their capabilities and intentions; and the performance and experiences of the MPLA and Cuban forces at war with South Africans and the third Angolan insurgent group – UNITA. The volume is illustrated with over 100 rare photographs, a dozen of maps and 15 colour profiles.

Описание: As of mid-1976, the civil war in Angola was seemingly decided: supported by a large contingent of Cuban forces, the MPLA established itself in power in Luanda. Its native competitors, the US-French-Zaire-supported FNLA, and UNITA, supported by China and South Africa, were in tatters. The French and Zaire-supported FLEC – an armed movement for the independence of the oil-rich Cabinda enclave – was in disarray. The last few of their surviving units were either driven out of the country, or forced into hiding in isolated corners of northern and south-eastern Angola.Nevertheless, the war went on. The MPLA’s government failed to decisively defeat UNITA, in southern Angola, and then found itself facing a coup attempt from within in May 1977. Crushed in blood, this resulted in thousands being jailed and tortured: many more escaped abroad, where they reinforced the ranks of the battered opposition. The coup prompted the Soviets to attempt increasing their influence with the aim of establishing permanent military bases in the country. While all such overtures were turned down, Angolan operations along the border to what was then the South-West Africa (subsequently Namibia) in October 1980, combined with the increased activity of SWAPO – an insurgency against the South African control of that territory - subsequently Namibia – prompted South Africa to launch another military intervention and resume supporting UNITA. In turn, this prompted not only the Cubans to further increase their military presence, but also the Soviet Union into delivering massive amounts of military aid to the government in Luanda. Angola not only assumed the role of one of the major hot battlefields in the Cold War: its ‘civil war’ saw a number of major showdowns between diverse belligerents, culminating in the Battle of Cangamba in 1983.Based on extensive research, with help of Angolan and Cuban sources, the ‘War of Intervention in Angola, Volume 2’, traces the military build-up of the Cuban and Soviet-supported Angolan military, the FAPLA and its combat operations, and those of the Cuban military in Angola, in the period 1976-1983, their capabilities and intentions, and their battlefield performances. The volume is illustrated with over 100 rare photographs, half a dozen maps and 18 colour profiles.

Описание: In August 2015, the government of the Russian Federation embarked its military forces on an intervention in Syria. Ever since, there is no end of discussions about Russian military capabilities and intentions – in Syria and beyond. To many, the performance of the Russian military – and especially the Russian Air-Space Force (VKS) – in this war was a clear demonstration of advanced technology, improved training, fearsome firepower, and great mobility. To others, the military operation only experienced limited success and exposed a number of weaknesses. Foremost between the latter are aircraft ill-suited to the necessities of expeditionary warfare, and a gross lack of advanced weaponry and equipment. While the military component of their intervention can only be described as providing clear evidence that the Russian military is in no condition to directly challenge the NATO’s eastern frontiers, it cannot be denied that through this action Moscow instrumented a turning point in the Syrian Civil War, and indeed one on geo-strategic plan. Organized and run in cooperation with very diverse allies – ranging from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran (IRGC), Hezbollah of Lebanon, the Kurdishan Workers Party (PKK) and a myrad of local warlords and their armed militias – their combination of intentional bombardment of insurgent-controlled parts of Syria, and indirect protection for the IRGC’s own military intervention in the country from a possible counter-intervention of the West, the Russians did succeed in saving the regime of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Through this, this campaign created an absurd precedent in newest history: a brutal dictatorship involved in systematic elimination of hundreds of thousands on industrial scale, and frequently with help of chemical weapons, was even made popular within circles of far-right and far-left alike around the World. In turn, the resulting flow of refugees destabilized the European Union and large parts of the NATO – two parties considered the actual primary opponents by the government in Moscow – and increased the popularity of the President Vladimir Putin to unprecedented levels. Illustrated by over 130 photographs, maps and colour profiles, ‘Moscow's Game of Poker’ is providing a clear outline of the participants in this extremely complex conflict, and areas it impacts. It is providing a unique and in-depth study of Moscow’s political aims, strategy, doctrine, target selection process, military technology and tactics, day-by-day operations, and the way the Russian Federation cooperates with diverse local allies. This story is told in combination with an exclusive insight into the similar campaign run by what is left of the Syrian Arab Air Force.

Описание:

In September 1994 a large U.S. invasion force converged on Haiti. Years of diplomatic efforts, secret government planning, and military rehearsals on the parts of the United States and the United Nations had failed to restore to office Haiti's democratically elected, junta-deposed president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and now invasion was imminent. Poised for action and mere minutes from striking, President Bill Clinton stunned military commanders when he announced a drastic change of plan: a peaceful cooperation with an illegal government.

In Eyewitness to Chaos Walter E. Kretchik retells the experience of this unprecedented and convoluted operation through the voices of its participants. Synthesizing accounts from a cross section of military officials, Kretchik unveils the little-known inner workings of government and military planning and the real-world quandaries of operational execution faced by those involved. The thirty-seven interviewees provide insight into the many facets of the operation: strategic and operational planning; intelligence gathering; multinational force design; medical and legal complications; communication concerns; contracting and logistics; ethnic, cultural, and historical considerations; mission execution; and language barriers. What emerges is a new perspective on this attempt to secure a brighter future for Haiti's people.

Walter E. Kretchik is professor emeritus of history at Western Illinois University. He is the author of U.S. Army Doctrine: From the American Revolution to the War on Terror.

Описание:

As international interference incidents augment in many regions of the world, the issue of international interference came fore more prominently in the academy and international law researches. Currently, we can observe multifarious forms international interventions, and their impacts on the international developments are obvious and increasingly influential.

Since international interventions take a myriad of forms in terms of their goals, methods employed and assume different properties, it is not easy to generalize them. Although, some international interventions can never be justified from the aspects of the law and international norms, it should be admitted that some international interventions have reasonable grounds, and play benign and constructive roles, and the latter are properly authorized by the UN Security Council, they prevent evil incidents, safeguard justice and peace, thus lives, security and rights of many people are guaranteed. This kind of intervention, most of the time, take peaceful forms, deploying peacekeeping troops to prevent violence from further escalation.

On the other hand, irrational interventions are viewed as ad hoc, counterproductive and illegitimate interventions, they are not authorized by the UN Security Council, or go beyond its authorization stipulations, thereby bypass the international law and institutions, and serve the narrow interests of certain states or groups, this type of interventions sometimes employ non-violent ways such as economic and political sanctions, embargoes and containment of a country, but mostly resort to military forces, heavy bombing and shelling and even overthrow the current regime, replace the government and promote their own allies ascending to power.

Looking from a rational historical view, the increasing demands for international intervention can be seen an important manifestation of human progress, because human beings share the same dwelling space--our earth--and mankind cannot stand idly by or stand aside when other humans are suffering and their lives are threatened, which require the interference of international aid and support.

But, if the illegitimate international interventions go rampant, then it will cause great harm, since such interventions, no matter under which holy banner, are bound to serve the selfish interests of a group of states or their strategic aims, whereas other nations and people become their victims. It also worth mentioning that international interventions by the major Western powers are increasingly spreading, and some states in collusion strive to use loopholes of UN authorizations, mislead the international community, and pressure the UN Security Council, to get approvals for interventions, and even we observe that some states bypass the UN and arbitrarily launch military operations targeting other countries and even attempt regime changes. Western interventionists have invented and developed abundant concepts and theories to justify their intentions and actions. In this way they attempt to dress the irrational international intervention under a "reasonable" cloak. At the same time, such interventionism sides with the strong against the weak, consequently, weaker nations are put under double pressure, practically and theoretically, thus losers are victimized and demonized, acts of the strong and illegitimate are presented as "natural" rights, resulting in the logic of the strong: the survival of the strongest.

In order to develop a comprehensive and deeper understanding of the theories and practices of Western international interventions, in 2011 the Institute of International Studies attached to Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has launched a topical research and analysis project entitled as "Theory and Reality of New Western International Intervention".
