Описание: This handbook offers students and researchers compact orientation in their study of intermedial phenomena in Anglophone literary texts and cultures by introducing them to current academic debates, theoretical concepts and methodologies. By combining theory with text analysis and contextual anchoring, it introduces students and scholars alike to a vast field of research which encompasses concepts such as intermediality, multi- and plurimediality, intermedial reference, transmediality, ekphrasis, as well as related concepts such as visual culture, remediation, adaptation, and multimodality, which are all discussed in connection with literary examples. Hence each of the 30 contributions spans both a theoretical approach and concrete analysis of literary texts from different centuries and different Anglophone cultures.

Описание: This volume collects twenty-two major essays by Werner Wolf published between 1992 and 2014, all of them revised but retaining the original argument. They form the core of those seminal writings which have contributed to establishing 'intermediality' as an internationally recognized research field, besides providing a by now widely accepted typology of the field and opening intermedial perspectives on areas as varied as narratology, metareferentiality and iconicity. The essays are presented chronologically under the headings of "Theory and Typology", "Literature-Music Relations", "Transmedial Narratology", and "Miscellaneous Transmedial Phenomena" and cover a wide spectrum of topics of both historical and contemporary relevance, ranging from J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schubert and Gulda through Sterne, Hardy, Woolf and Beckett to Jan Steen, Hogarth, Magritte and comics. The volume should be essential reading for scholars of literature, music and art history with an interdisciplinary orientation as well as general readers interested in the fascinating interaction of the arts.

Автор: Janna Houwen Название: Film and Video Intermediality: The Question of Medium Specificity in Contemporary Moving Images ISBN: 1501320971 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781501320972 Издательство: Bloomsbury Academic Рейтинг: Цена: 137280.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: In Film and Video Intermediality, Janna Houwen innovatively rewrites the concept of medium specificity in order to answer the questions “what is meant by video?” and “what is meant by film?” How are these two media (to be) understood? How can film and video be defined as distinct, specific media? In this era of mixed moving media, it is vital to ask these questions precisely and especially on the media of video and film. Mapping the specificity of film and video is indispensable in analyzing and understanding the many contemporary intermedial objects in which film and video are mixed or combined.

Описание: Afterlives of Romantic Intermediality addresses the manifold, even global artistic developments that were initiated by European Romantics. In the first section, the contributors show how the rising perspective of intermediality was discussed in philosophical terms and adapted itself to Romantic literature and music. In the second section, the contributors show how post-Romantic writers, visual artists, and composers have engaged with Romantic heritage. By exploring primary works that range from European arts to Latin American literature, these essays focus on the interdisciplinary developments that have emerged in literature, music, painting, film, architecture, and video art. Overall, the contributions in this volume demonstrate that intermedial connections--or sometimes the conscious lack of such connections--embody intriguing aspects of modernity and postmodernity.

Описание: The study of intermediality explores the exchangeability of expressive means and aesthetic conventions between different art and media forms, a trend amplified and enabled by the digital age. It has become a powerful structuring concept in digital humanities, where traditional boundaries between disciplines as well as genres are being eroded. Contributors to this volume discuss the concepts of intermediality and digital humanities from a range of theoretical perspectives. While in the humanities, generally, there is continued focus on traditional textuality, this up-to-date collection demonstrates the explosive potential of new forms of hypermedia studies to transform our understanding of a range of genres.Contents: Literary Studies from Hermeneutics to Media Culture Studies; (Inter)mediality and the Study of Literature; Discourses and Models of Intermediality; Intermediality and Aesthetic Theory in Shklovsky's and Adorno's Thought; Intermediality, Translation, Comparative Literature, and World Literature; Making Sense of the Digital as Embodied Experience; The Metaphysics of Electronic Being; Video Games as Equipment for Living; Dialogue between Meaning Systems in Intermedial d104s; Intermediality and Human vs. Machine Translation; Intermediality, Rhetoric, and Pedagogy; Race and Gender Representations in Advertising in Cable Cartoon Programming; An Intermedial Reading of Paley's Sita Sings the Blues; Aesthetics, Nationalism, and the Image of Woman in Modern Indian Art; Towards a Multimodal Analysis of da Rimini's Dollspace; Intermedial Representations in Asian Macbeth-s; Innovation and Multimedia in the Poetry of cummings and Mayakovsky; Intermediality, Rewriting Histories, and Identities in French Rap; Intermediality as Cultural Literacy and Teaching the Graphic Novel; Comics and the Graphic Novel in Spain and Iberian Galicia; Qu(e)erying Comic Book Culture and Representations of Sexuality in Wonder Woman; Digital Media, 419, and the Politics of the Global Network; Media Icons of War and the Instrumentalization of Images in US-American Media; Political Deliberation and E-Participation in Policy-Making; Digital Humanities in Developed and Emerging Markets; Intermediality, Architecture, and the Politics of Urbanity; Intersubjectivity and Intermediality in the Work of Serra; Digital Humanities and a Case Study of (Inter)medial Participation; Bibliography for Work in Intermediality and Digital Humanities.

Название: Augustine beyond the Book: Intermediality, Transmediality and Reception ISBN: 9004222138 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789004222137 Издательство: Brill Цена: 164700.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: Augustine of Hippo (354-430) is arguably the most influential thinker and Latin author of the Early Christian period. His widespread legacy has been explored to date only in part, and largely with respect to his textual reception. This interdisciplinary volume attempts to redress this emphasis with a set of analyses of Augustine's impact in the visual arts, drama, devotional practices, music, the science-faith debate and psychotherapy. The included studies trace intricate and occasionally surprising instances of Augustine's ubiquitous presence in intellectual, spiritual and artistic terms. The result is a far more differentiated and dynamic picture of the mechanisms by which the legacy of an historical figure may be perpetuated, including the sometimes supra-rational and imaginative dimensions of transmission.
Автор: Cara L. Lewis Название: Dynamic Form: How Intermediality Made Modernism ISBN: 150174917X ISBN-13(EAN): 9781501749179 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 49280.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание:
Dynamic Form traces how intermedial experiments shape modernist texts from 1900 to 1950. Considering literature alongside painting, sculpture, photography, and film, Cara Lewis examines how these arts inflect narrative movement, contribute to plot events, and configure poetry and memoir. As forms and formal theories cross from one artistic realm to another and back again, modernism shows its obsession with form--and even at times becomes a formalism itself--but as Lewis writes, that form is far more dynamic than we have given it credit for. Form fulfills such various functions that we cannot characterize it as a mere container for content or matter, nor can we consign it to ignominy opposite historicism or political commitment.
As a structure or scheme that enables action, form in modernism can be plastic, protean, or even fragile, and works by Henry James, Virginia Woolf, Mina Loy, Evelyn Waugh, and Gertrude Stein demonstrate the range of form's operations. Revising three major formal paradigms--spatial form, pure form, and formlessness--and recasting the history of modernist form, this book proposes an understanding of form as a verbal category, as a kind of doing. Dynamic Form thus opens new possibilities for conversation between modernist studies and formalist studies and simultaneously promotes a capacious rethinking of the convergence between literary modernism and creative work in other media.
