Описание: "A compelling account of the zombi as an anthropological reality and evocative symbol of a state of dispossession, desperation, and death."-Roger Luckhurst, Zombies: A Cultural History "An adventurer's anthropological quest offering a novel description of the contemporary zombie."-Sarah J. Lauro, author of The Transatlantic Zombie: Slavery, Rebellion, and Living Death "Displays an empathy for the cultural reality of the zombie in Haiti that delivers important insight on the island nation's people and their lived realities."-Christopher M. Moreman, coeditor of Race, Oppression and the Zombie: Essays on Cross-Cultural Appropriations of the Caribbean Tradition Forensic pathologist Philippe Charlier-dubbed the "Indiana Jones of the graveyards"-travels to Haiti where rumors claim that some who die may return to life as zombies. Charlier investigates these far-fetched stories and finds that, in Haiti, the dead are a part of daily life. Families, fearing that loved ones may return from the grave, urge pallbearers to take rambling routes to prevent the recently departed from finding their way home from cemeteries. Corpses are sometimes killed a second time...just to be safe. And a person might spend their life preparing their funeral and grave to ensure they will not become a wandering soul after death. But are the stories true? Charlier's investigations lead him to Vodou leader Max Beauvoir and other priests, who reveal how bodies can be reanimated. In some cases, sorcerers lure the dead from their graves and give them a potion concocted from Devil's Snare, a plant more commonly known as Jimsonweed. Sometimes secret societies use poudre zombi-"zombie powder"-spiked with the tetrodotoxin found in blowfish. Charlier eagerly collects evidence, examining Vodou dolls by X-ray, making sacrifices at rituals, and visiting cemeteries under the cloak of night. Zombies follows Charlier's journey to understand the fascinating and frightening world of Haiti's living dead, inviting readers to believe the unbelievable.
In the last forty years anthropologists have made major contributions to understanding the heterogeneity of reproductive trends and processes underlying them. Fertility transition, rather than the story of the triumphant spread of Western birth control rationality, reveals a diversity of reproductive means and ends continuing before, during, and after transition. This collection brings together anthropological case studies, placing them in a comparative framework of compositional demography and conjunctural action. The volume addresses major issues of inequality and distribution which shape population and social structures, and in which fertility trends and the formation and size of families are not decided solely or primarily by reproduction.
The contributors to Passages and Afterworlds explore death and its rituals across the Caribbean, drawing on ethnographic theories shaped by a deep understanding of the region's long history of violent encounters, exploitation, and cultural diversity. Examining the relationship between living bodies and the spirits of the dead, the contributors investigate the changes in cosmologies and rituals in the cultural sphere of death in relation to political developments, state violence, legislation, policing, and identity politics. Contributors address topics that range from the ever-evolving role of divinized spirits in Haiti and the contemporary mortuary practice of Indo-Trinidadians to funerary ceremonies in rural Jamaica and ancestor cults in Maroon culture in Suriname. Questions of alterity, difference, and hierarchy underlie these discussions of how racial, cultural, and class differences have been deployed in ritual practice and how such rituals have been governed in the colonial and postcolonial Caribbean.

As issues and circumstances investigated by anthropologists are becoming ever more diverse, the need to address social affiliation in contemporary situations of mobility, urbanity, transnational connections, individuation, media, and capital flows, has never been greater. Thinking Through Sociality combines a review of classical theories with recent theoretical innovations across a wide range of issues, locales, situations and domains. In this book, an international group of contributors train attention on the concepts of disjuncture, field, social space, sociability, organizations and network, mid-range concepts that are "good to think with." Neither too narrowly defined nor too sweeping, these concepts can be used to think through a myriad of ethnographic situations.

It is hard to imagine tourism without the creative use of seductive, as well as restrictive, imaginaries about peoples and places. These socially shared assemblages are collaboratively produced and consumed by a diverse range of actors around the globe. As a nexus of social practices through which individuals and groups establish places and peoples as credible objects of tourism, “tourism imaginaries” have yet to be fully explored. Presenting innovative conceptual approaches, this volume advances ethnographic research methods and critical scholarship regarding tourism and the imaginaries that drive it. The various authors contribute methodologically as well as conceptually to anthropology’s grasp of the images, forces, and encounters of the contemporary world.

Описание: The anthology African and Native American Contact in the United States: Anthropological and Historical Perspectives explores how anthropologists and historians have, over time, understood the dynamics between Africans and Native Americans. The book brings together four fields of anthropological knowledge and the historical record to illuminate the lived realities at the root of African and Native American contact. The first four chapters are organized around specific paradigms centered on archaeological research, culture, linguistics, and history. These paradigms frame selected readings on specific topics such as ethnogenesis in African-Native American settlements, transculturalization, Cherokee folklore, and the experiences of those of mixed blood. The final chapters are devoted to the 21st century relevance of the four paradigms, as well as 21st century implications of African and Native American contact. Featuring select previously printed works and thoughtfully written original material, African and Native American Contact in the United States thoughtfully combines primary sources that chronicle past events and an anthropological perspective that illuminates authentic experiences. The book is well-suited to courses in American Indian studies, African American studies, American history, and anthropology.

Описание: Faced with a world that is environmentally out of balance, that is unhealthy in many respects, and that reflects stark inequalities, anthropologists are challenging themselves and others to engage in recovery, renewal, and reclaiming. This volume of Southern Anthropological Society Proceedings seeks to grapple with these challenges head-on. The essays provide wide-ranging discussions of concrete problems, often with a focus on the Appalachian region. Among the important issues raised are the following: the effect of landscape on health in Huntington, West Virginia; food justice; drug use and its misrepresentation in Appalachia; the relationship between evangelical religion and depression; the changing definitions of mental illness over time and how those definitions are used as instruments of social control; how the spiritual practices of Eastern Band Cherokees are connected to medical care; and the challenges recent Haitian immigrants face in obtaining health care in a new culture. While solutions to these problems are complex and always have their roots in local circumstance, the essays in Recovery, Renewal, Reclaiming will inspire strategies that will clear blighted environments, deliver nourishing food, ease the lives of marginalized people, and lead to respect for all beliefs as we work together to bring balance to our environmental, physical, and spiritual health.

Описание: In this anthropological study of a neurodegenerative disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Parkinsonism-Dementia Complex (ALS/PDC) in Guam, Western Pacific, Verena Keck intertwines three separate perspectives of history, medicine, and anthropology. The book is an important contribution to the long overdue decolonizing of biomedical research and argues that neurological diseases can be better understood if they are seen, too, as social and cultural phenomena. With sound ethnography linked to current, controversial debates in neurology, the author breaks new ground; her insights add to the hitherto few anthropological studies of neurodegenerative diseases in non-Western societies.

Описание: More than 13,000 people lost their lives and many others suffered in other ways during the Maoist-led armed conflict that lasted for ten years (1996-2006) in Nepal. Many people are still missing and many more have been displaced. The lives of women in particular have been affected, with a heightened prevalence of gender-based violence during the armed conflict and post-conflict transition period. The warring sides used gendered strategies of the war wage war against each other and this book deals about the implications of such tactics. The implications of the cantonment camps in which the Maoist combatants were placed illuminate unintended consequences of this temporary provision. By recording the implications and subjective experiences of some of the victims of this war, often regarded as a low-intensity conflict, this book portrays the agony of women who endured the conflict. It shows how the conflict exacerbated the prevailing gender inequality suffered by women. Narratives of victims themselves and their portrayal in some newspapers during the conflict period have been taken in account in developing this book. The book also highlights the agentive strategies women devised to cope with the unwanted situation appropriate in their social, cultural, and political contexts. This book presents the social history of certain segment of people, especially women and displaced people, whose traumatic experiences, agonies, or efforts to come out of that often gets shadowed in the portrayal of macro level picture of the society, polity or even a war.
