Описание: Real-time or applied digital signal processing courses are offered as follow-ups to conventional or theory-oriented digital signal processing courses in many engineering programs for the purpose of teaching students the technical know-how for putting signal processing algorithms or theory into practical use. These courses normally involve access to a teaching laboratory that is equipped with hardware boards, in particular DSP boards, together with their supporting software. A number of textbooks have been written discussing how to achieve real-time implementation on these hardware boards. This book discusses how to use smartphones as hardware boards for real-time implementation of signal processing algorithms as an alternative to the hardware boards that are used in signal processing laboratory courses. The fact that mobile devices, in particular smartphones, have become powerful processing platforms led to the development of this book enabling students to use their own smartphones to run signal processing algorithms in real-time considering that these days nearly all students possess smartphones. Changing the hardware platforms that are currently used in applied or real-time signal processing courses to smartphones creates a truly mobile laboratory experience or environment for students. In addition, it relieves the cost burden associated with using dedicated signal processing boards noting that the software development tools for smartphones are free of charge and are well-maintained by smartphone manufacturers. This book is written in such a way that it can be used as a textbook for real-time or applied digital signal processing courses offered at many universities. Ten lab experiments that are commonly encountered in such courses are covered in the book. This book is written primarily for those who are already familiar with signal processing concepts and are interested in their real-time and practical aspects. Similar to existing real-time courses, knowledge of C programming is assumed. This book can also be used as a self-study guide for those who wish to become familiar with signal processing app development on either Android or iPhone smartphones.

Описание:

The book provides a comprehensive exposition of all major topics in digital signal processing (DSP). With numerous illustrative examples for easy understanding of the topics, it also includes MATLAB-based examples with codes in order to encourage the readers to become more confident of the fundamentals and to gain insights into DSP. Further, it presents real-world signal processing design problems using MATLAB and programmable DSP processors. In addition to problems that require analytical solutions, it discusses problems that require solutions using MATLAB at the end of each chapter.
Divided into 13 chapters, it addresses many emerging topics, which are not typically found in advanced texts on DSP. It includes a chapter on adaptive digital filters used in the signal processing problems for faster acceptable results in the presence of changing environments and changing system requirements. Moreover, it offers an overview of wavelets, enabling readers to easily understand the basics and applications of this powerful mathematical tool for signal and image processing. The final chapter explores DSP processors, which is an area of growing interest for researchers. A valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students, it can also be used for self-study by researchers, practicing engineers and scientists in electronics, communications, and computer engineering as well as for teaching one- to two-semester courses.

Описание:

Why Are You Always on the Phone? SMART Skills with the Smartphone Generation is a revelation and an actual depiction of what goes on in the everyday lives of youth who are connected and are online most of the time either via their smartphone or their iPad. Many a time, parents of tweens and teenagers from the age of 10 onwards to 18, are curious and are even "tearing their hair out"; frustrated with their child/children's obsession with texting and chatting online 24/7. The challenge then is how we can seek to understand the complexities and nuances of our youth and their connection in the 21st-century technologically driven globalized society. Unraveling this challenge, this book provides powerful insights into the lives of individuals as they grapple with the rise of being connected at any time at any place via their smartphone. Voices from parents, tweens and teens sharing their online experiences and opinions have been weaved and compiled into the text for an honest and interesting read for all.

With stories and anecdotes, Why Are You Always on the Phone? serves to answer the questions "Why are you always online?", "What are you doing online?" and a list of queries that most parents, educators and even tweens and teenagers themselves seek to know and are curious about. It is hoped that by answering these, it will prompt deeper, more empathetic, and layered connections between parents, tweens, teenagers and educators for more fulfilling parent-child and teacher-student relationships and thus highlight the importance of practising effective and safe uses of the smartphone and other devices.

Описание: Every day we are inundated by propaganda that claims life will be better once we are connected to digital technology. Poverty, famine, and injustice will end, and the economy will be 'green'. All anyone needs is the latest smartphone.

In this succinct and lively book, Maxwell and Miller take a critical look at contemporary gadgets and the systems that connect them, shedding light on environmental risks. Contrary to widespread claims, consumer electronics and other digital technologies are made in ways that cause some of the worst environmental disasters of our time - conflict-minerals extraction, fatal and life-threatening occupational hazards, toxic pollution of ecosystems, rising energy consumption linked to increased carbon emissions, and e-waste. Nonetheless, a greener future is possible, in which technology meets its emancipatory and progressive potential.

How Green is Your Smartphone? encourages us to look at our phones and tablets in a whole new way, and is important reading for anyone concerned by the impact of everyday technologies on our environment.
