Описание: Given the renewed interest in “identity” within applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, and the difficulty and relative unfamiliarity of current theories of subjectivity for students in these fields, this book meets a clear need: an accessible introduction to theories of subjectivity and the contexts in which they arise for students of language. These include language and gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationalism, racism and disability, subjectivity in second language learning, and language and subjectivity in testing, institutional and forensic settings.

Описание:

According to Thomas Metzinger, no such things as selves exist in the world: nobody ever had or was a self. All that exists are phenomenal selves, as they appear in conscious experience. The phenomenal self, however, is not a thing but an ongoing process; it is the content of a "transparent self-model." In Being No One, Metzinger, a German philosopher, draws strongly on neuroscientific research to present a representationalist and functional analysis of what a consciously experienced first-person perspective actually is. Building a bridge between the humanities and the empirical sciences of the mind, he develops new conceptual toolkits and metaphors; uses case studies of unusual states of mind such as agnosia, neglect, blindsight, and hallucinations; and offers new sets of multilevel constraints for the concept of consciousness. Metzinger's central question is: How exactly does strong, consciously experienced subjectivity emerge out of objective events in the natural world? His epistemic goal is to determine whether conscious experience, in particular the experience of being someone that results from the emergence of a phenomenal self, can be analyzed on subpersonal levels of description. He also asks if and how our Cartesian intuitions that subjective experiences as such can never be reductively explained are themselves ultimately rooted in the deeper representational structure of our conscious minds.

Описание: At the dawn of the modern era, philosophers reinterpreted their subject as the study of consciousness, pushing the body to the margins of philosophy. With the arrival of Husserlian thought in the late nineteenth century, the body was once again understood to be part of the transcendental field. And yet, despite the enormous influence of Husserl’s phenomenology, the role of ""embodiment"" in the broader philosophical landscape remains largely unresolved. In his ambitious debut book, Phenomenology and Embodiment, Joona Taipale tackles the Husserlian concept—also engaging the thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Michel Henry—with a comprehensive and systematic phenomenological investigation into the role of embodiment in the constitution of self-awareness, intersubjectivity, and objective reality. In doing so, he contributes a detailed clarification of the fundamental constitutive role of embodiment in the basic relations of subjectivity.

Описание:

What happens if we read nineteenth-century and Victorian texts not for the autonomous liberal subject, but for singularity--for what is partial, contingent, and in relation, rather than what is merely alone? Feminine Singularity offers a powerful feminist theory of the subject--and shows us paths to thinking subjectivity, race, and gender anew in literature and in our wider social world.

Through fresh, sophisticated readings of Lewis Carroll, Christina Rossetti, Charles Baudelaire, and Wilkie Collins in conversation with psychoanalysis, Black feminist and queer-of-color theory, and continental philosophy, Ronjaunee Chatterjee uncovers a lexicon of feminine singularity that manifests across poetry and prose through likeness and minimal difference, rather than individuality and identity. Reading for singularity shows us the ways femininity is fundamentally entangled with racial difference in the nineteenth century and well into the contemporary, as well as how rigid categories can be unsettled and upended.

Grappling with the ongoing violence embedded in the Western liberal imaginary, Feminine Singularity invites readers to commune with the subversive potentials in nineteenth-century literature for thinking subjectivity today.

Wittgenstein and the Problem of Metaphysics: Aesthetics, Ethics and Subjectivity

Описание: Exploring the rupture between Wittgenstein’s early and late phases, Michael Smith provides an original re-assessment of the metaphysical consistencies that exist throughout his divergent texts. Smith shows how Wittgenstein’s criticism of metaphysics typically invoked the very thing he was seeking to erase. Taking an alternative approach to the inherent contradiction in his work, the ‘problem of metaphysics’, as Smith terms it, becomes the organizing principle of Wittgenstein’s thought rather than something to overcome. This metaphysical thread enables further reflection on the poetic nature of Wittgenstein’s philosophy as well as his preoccupation with ethics and aesthetics as important factors mostly absent from the secondary literature. The turn to aesthetics is crucial to a re-assessment of Wittgenstein's legacy, and is done in conjunction with an innovative analysis of Nietzsche’s critique of Kantian aesthetics and Kant’s ‘judgments of taste’. The result is a unique discussion of the limits and possibilities of metaphysics, aesthetics, ethics and the task of the philosopher more generally.

The Cinema of Marguerite Duras: Multisensoriality and Female Subjectivity

Описание: Examines how the films of Marguerite Duras create a multisensorial experience for spectators

The writer Marguerite Duras was a key figure in post-war French cinema, pioneering innovations such as the disjunction of film and image, and the primacy given to voices, silence and music. Her multisensorial approach opened up new spaces for the female experience to be expressed. Although she worked with some of the best French visual technicians and musicians of her time, critiques have often neglected the visual and sonic aesthetics of her films, and their effects on spectators. Drawing on theories of embodiment and spectatorship, this book analyses the tactility and multisensoriality of Duras' films, and how they relate to her female-centred perspective.

Key features
  • Examines how the director's filmic innovations create a sensorial space for the female experience to be expressed
  • Builds on recent work on film as a multisensory medium
  • Covers Duras's entire film production, including short films and early adaptations

Modernism and Subjectivity: How Modernist Fiction Invented the Postmodern Subject

Описание: In Modernism and Subjectivity: How Modernist Fiction Invented the Postmodern Subject, Adam Meehan argues that theories of subjectivity coming out of psychoanalytic, poststructuralist, and adjacent late?-twentieth-?century intellectual traditions had already been articulated in modernist fiction before 1945. Offering a bold new genealogy for literary modernism, Meehan finds versions of a postmodern subject embodied in works by authors who intently undermine attempts to stabilize conceptions of identity and who draw attention to the role of language in shaping conceptions of the self. Focusing on the philosophical registers of literary texts, Meehan traces the development of modernist attitudes toward subjectivity, particularly in relation to issues of ideology, spatiality, and violence. His analysis explores a selection of works published between 1904 and 1941, beginning with Joseph Conrad's prescient portrait of the subject interpolated by ideology and culminating with Samuel Beckett's categorical disavowal of the subjective ""I."" Additional close readings of novels by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, Nathanael West, and Virginia Woolf establish that modernist texts conceptualize subjectivity as an ideological and linguistic construction that reverberates across understandings of consciousness, race, place, and identity. By reconsidering the movement's function and scope, Modernism and Subjectivity charts how profoundly modernist literature shaped the intellectual climate of the twentieth century.

Crisis and Husserlian Phenomenology: A Reflection on Awakened Subjectivity

Описание: The experience of realizing that something has slipped our notice is a common one and yet it has profound implications for how phenomenology - or the study of consciousness - relates to everyday life. When we reflect, we have a heightened ability to recognize and take note, but in the process of realization we become culpable for our failure to do so. Is this failure a form of naivete then? Using quotidian examples, Kenneth Knies develops an original account of naivete as a failure to take notice and suggests that humans are responsible for this failure because they have assumed a naive position on the basis of the information that was not, but should have been available to them. For Edmund Husserl, the philosopher is responsible for recovering this naive position from a wakeful perspective, so that owing to the magnitude of this task, they themselves are a subject of crisis. By placing Husserl in dialogue with other key thinkers in Continental philosophy such as Descartes, Kant, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Derrida, Kenneth Knies interrogates how transcendental subjectivity, or pure consciousness is discovered and what exactly it is responsible for. In doing so, he provides a thorough text suitable for advanced students and scholars interested in Continental philosophy, phenomenology, problems of responsibility and the philosophy of history.
