Описание: Charleston, South Carolina, was the largest city in the American South in the colonial era. From 1700 to 1775 its growth rate was exceeded in the New World only by that of Philadelphia. The first comprehensive study of this crucial colonial centre, Building Charleston charts the rise of one of early Americas great cities, revealing its importance to the evolution of both South Carolina and the British Atlantic world during the eighteenth century. In many of the southern colonies, plantation agriculture was the sole source of prosperity, shaping the destiny of nearly all inhabitants, both free and enslaved. The insistence of South Carolinas founders on the creation of towns, however, meant that this colony, unlike its counterparts, was also shaped by the imperatives of urban society. In this respect South Carolina followed developments in the rest of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic world, where towns were growing rapidly in size and influence. At the vanguard of change, burgeoning urban spaces across the British Atlantic ushered in industrial development, consumerism, social restructuring, and a new era in political life. Charleston proved no less an engine of change for the colonial lowcountry, promoting early industrialization and forging an ambitious middle class, a consumer society, and a vigorous political scene.Bringing these previously neglected aspects of early South Carolinian society to our attention, Emma Hart challenges the popular image of the pre-revolutionary South as a society completely shaped by staple agriculture. Moreover, Building Charleston places the colonial American town, for the first time, at the very heart of a transatlantic process of urban development.

Описание: An Economist Book of the Year, 2001. In the 18th century, a debate ensued over the French naturalist Buffon`s contention that the New World was in fact geologically new. Historians, naturalists, and philosophers clashed over Buffon`s view. This book maintains that the "dispute" was also a debate over historical authority: upon whose sources and facts should naturalists and historians reconstruct the history of the New World and its people. In addressing this question, the author offers a strikingly novel interpretation of the Enlightenment.

Описание: Offering an engaging account of the representation of slavery in eighteenth-century British literature, Spectacular Suffering challenges the dominant conceptions of slave agency and of sentimentalism in the works of prominent writers from the period. In this book, Ramesh Mallipeddi seeks to map the conditions under which slave distress emerged as a topic of emotional concern and political intervention in the long eighteenth century. Concentrating on two defining features of Atlantic slavery?commodification and punishment?alongside the literary methods of sentimentality, Mallipeddi investigates how melancholy sentiment mediated colonial relations between English citizens and Caribbean slaves. Specifically, he asks how the extension of sympathy was shaped by literary forms such as the prose romance, periodical essay, heroic epistle, sentimental novel, and slave narrative.Focusing on the way that writers such as Aphra Behn, Richard Steele, Laurence Sterne, Olaudah Equiano, and Mary Prince deploy the conventions of sympathy, the author also examines how the black slave emerges both as an object of compassion and as a sympathetic witnessing subject. Mallipeddi’s careful, considered accounting of primary texts and his syntheses of important historical and critical work combine to offer nuanced and persuasive insights into a broad range of texts from throughout the long eighteenth century.

Описание: The end of the eighteenth century saw the start of a new craze in Europe: tiny portraits of single eyes that were exchanged by lovers or family members. Unearthing these portraits, the author proposes that the rage for eye miniatures - and their abrupt disappearance - reveals a knot in the unfolding of the history of vision.

Описание:

In the natural course of events, humans fall sick and die. The history of medicine bristles with attempts to find new and miraculous remedies, to work with and against nature to restore humans to health and well-being. In this book, Londa Schiebinger examines medicine and human experimentation in the Atlantic World, exploring the circulation of people, disease, plants, and knowledge between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. She traces the development of a colonial medical complex from the 1760s, when a robust experimental culture emerged in the British and French West Indies, to the early 1800s, when debates raged about banning the slave trade and, eventually, slavery itself.

Massive mortality among enslaved Africans and European planters, soldiers, and sailors fueled the search for new healing techniques. Amerindian, African, and European knowledges competed to cure diseases emerging from the collision of peoples on newly established, often poorly supplied, plantations. But not all knowledge was equal. Highlighting the violence and fear endemic to colonial struggles, Schiebinger explores aspects of African medicine that were not put to the test, such as Obeah and vodou. This book analyzes how and why specific knowledges were blocked, discredited, or held secret.

Jesse Cromwell paints a vivid picture of the lives of littoral peoples who normalized their subversions of imperial law.
