Название: Gendered Voices: Reflections on Gender and Education in South Africa and Sudan ISBN: 9462091366 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789462091368 Издательство: Brill Рейтинг: Цена: 119540.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: Internationally, there is growing awareness that the target of Education for All by 2015 will not be met unless more strident efforts are made to improve access for marginalized, hard-to-reach children (most often girls). For almost four decades gender equality in education has been one of the key global concerns and as a result various organizations at national and international levels along with governments have initiated programs focusing on achieving gender equality, women’s empowerment and improving girls’ access to education. By focusing on access alone (i.e. gender parity) we may not understand how education can be used to achieve empowerment and influence cultural practices that are gender insensitive. In this volume we attempt to call into question the content of gender equality as simple parity and in doing so we reflect upon the following questions: Do the global (macro) discourses on gender equality in education lead to a focus on numbers only or to more profound sustainable changes at the national (meso) level and the school (micro) level? To what extent have national policies been adjusted to reflect the global discourses on gender equality? Are schools/classrooms (micro) expected to adjust to these global discourses and if so in what ways has this happened? What are the challenges of providing access to good quality education for girls in both countries? Is there a dichotomy between the schools/classrooms on the one hand and the community on the other in terms of gender equality/equity? To what extent is gender equality/equity imposed upon schools and communities and does it take into account the cultural practices in traditional communities?

Описание: This book features eleven first-person stories of men from diverse class and racial backgrounds who have made a long-term commitment to end their physical and emotional abuse and controlling behaviours. These men speak frankly about the abuse they inflicted on their families, what it took to get them to face themselves, and how they feel about the damage they have caused. All participated in violence intervention programs, some for as long as ten years. To put a face on violence and to encourage activism for reform, most of the eleven have allowed their photos and real names to be used in the book. Surrounding this material are chapters that provide context about the disputes among researchers about whether batterer intervention programs work (only a small number of batterers renounce their abuse) and chapters that address the reactions of partners to these stories. ""When the Man You Love is Abusive"" is designed to caution women not to be manipulated by accounts of change and to outline the stages men need to pass through in the long process of becoming accountable. ""The Last Word: Voices of Survivors"" ends the book with a focus group discussion in which former abuse victims and advocates respond candidly to the men's stories.

Описание: Interrogating supply/demand from an inter- and multi-disciplinary perspective, this collection broadens engagement beyond the routine analysis of the locus of violence in prostitution and the validity of the prostitute's consent. A focus on the supply/demand dynamic brings into play a range of other societal, economic and psychological factors such as the social construction of sexuality, the viability of alternative choices for prostitutes and clients, and the impact of regulatory regimes on the provision of sexual services. The factors which underlie each component of the supply/demand dyad are also studied and an examination is made of their dynamic interrelation. The collection emphasizes the importance of rendering policy makers alert to the evidence emerging from empirical studies conducted in different fields of enquiry, in the hope of moving beyond polarity and politics at the local, national and international level.

Описание: The anthology Queer in Aztl?n: Chicano Male Recollections of Consciousness and Coming Out gives readers the opportunity to experience deeply personal narratives from queer Chicanos/Mexicanos, and makes it possible for them to understand and sympathize with the stories’ protagonists. It was also a finalist for a 2014 Lambda Award. The book explores issues of queer youth identity, sexuality, masculinity, homophobia, sexism, and violence in Mexican and American culture, presents a complex view of queer Chicanos/Mexicanos, and contests dominant sexual norms. It challenges current scholarship in Chicana/Chicano studies to expand beyond the traditional confines of male sexuality. The seven sections of the book survey the queer experience from a variety of perspectives through reading selections that focus on presence, recollection, embodied self, men of heart, Coatlicue state, and Joter?a studies. A unique transnational bibliography gives emphasis to themes on, or by, queer Chicano and Mexicano authors on male sexuality, homoerotic writing, literary criticism, and fiction.
