Описание:

In this illuminating study, Gelien Matthews demonstrates how slave rebellions in the British West Indies influenced the tactics of abolitionists in England and how the rhetoric and actions of the abolitionists emboldened slaves. Moving between the world of the British Parliament and the realm of Caribbean plantations, Matthews reveals a transatlantic dialectic of antislavery agitation and slave insurrection that eventually influenced the dismantling of slavery in British-held territories.
Focusing on slave revolts that took place in Barbados in 1816, in Demerara in 1823, and in Jamaica in 1831--32, Matthews identifies four key aspects in British abolitionist propaganda regarding Caribbean slavery: the denial that antislavery activism prompted slave revolts, the attempt to understand and recount slave uprisings from the slaves' perspectives, the portrayal of slave rebels as victims of armed suppressors and as agents of the antislavery movement, and the presentation of revolts as a rationale against the continuance of slavery. She makes shrewd use of previously overlooked publications of British abolitionists to prove that their language changed over time in response to slave uprisings.
Historians previously have examined the economic, religious, and political bases for slavery's abolishment in the Caribbean, but Matthews here emphasizes the agency of slaves in the march toward freedom. Her compelling work is a valuable analytical tool in the interpretation of abolition in North America, uncovering the important connections between rebellious slaves on one side of the Atlantic and abolitionists on the other side.

Описание:

The hilarious tale of the UK Independence Party's journey from rags to riches and back again from a front-line activist.

Paul Oakley had five minutes of fame at a Young Conservative conference when he ripped up a copy of the Maastricht Treaty at the end of his speech attacking John Major's European policy. He stood for the Tories in the 2005 general election but failed to lie convincingly enough to be added to the A list of candidates when David Cameron became party leader. So in 2011 he renounced his Tory membership in a fit of pique and joined UKIP.

Although second-placed candidate on the UKIP London MEP list in 2014, his Brussels posting was thwarted. If the two counterfeit UKIP parties and backfolded ballot papers weren't enough there was a killer blow. A false allegation of sexual assault by a homeless Bulgarian was made against his right-hand man which hit a tabloid front page on polling day.

Commiserated by the party with the post of London regional enforcer, he then had to deal with all sorts of members' escapades, not least those of loose cannons Winston McKenzie and Islamosceptic Anne Marie Waters.

Paul Oakley plotted with Nigel Farage and Arron Banks to knit a net for UKIP MP Douglas Carswell but that spoilsport left the party just before this net was cast and so cheated the hangman. Having cleverly wangled his way to take over as candidate for Carswell's Clacton seat, Oakley performed abysmally there in the 2017 general election and failed to be elected. Again.

Consoled once more with the post of General Secretary which dealt with a higher calibre of misdemeanours, Oakley took on the solemn task of knifing then-leader Henry Bolton and forcing him from office.

Paul Oakley is a firm supporter of new leader Gerard Batten who saved UKIP from bankruptcy in the face of a repugnant legal case and has increased membership by 50%. Yet he remains unconvinced of two things. Firstly, that Gerard's advisor Tommy Robinson is the pantomime villain he is portrayed to be by the mainstream media. Secondly, that Banging On About Islam is wise at a time when all the forces of the establishment are conspiring to betray Brexit.

And if Brexit is betrayed both Oakley and UKIP itself pledge that British politics will thereafter become 'Emotional'.

This personal history from a populist insider also covers the adventures of David Kurten, Peter Whittle, Steve Woolfe, Suzanne Evans, Paul Nuttall and all the others you've forgotten about.

Описание:

Ben-Zion Gold’s memoir brings to life the world of a million Jews in pre-World War II Poland who were later destroyed by the Nazis. Warmly recalling the relationships, rituals, observances, and celebrations, Gold evokes the sense of family and faith that helped him through the catastrophe that followed. With him we experience the life and institutions of the time: the Heder and hooky playing, his encounter with Hassidism, the courtship and marriage of his oldest sister, and the author’s own first inkling of love. And with him, we recapture the memories that made life worth living in the face of disaster, along with the experience of the human capacity for evil that tested and transformed his faith as it devastated his world. Finally, Gold tells of the fate of his family and of his own escape from that fate.

Описание:

Two exceptional personalities interconnect in this short, captivating narrative. Jisbella Lyth's story begins with a hair-raising adventure on her parents' farm in a Hampshire village. She survives--as she later does a remarkable series of other life experiences--and her stories provide fascinating glimpses into a rapidly changing post-Victorian world. Among the most extraordinary of these life experiences are her encounters with a leading proponent of those changes, George Bernard Shaw.

In the summer of 1930 a retired soldier named Ambrose Lyth became postmaster of the remote and tiny village of Ayot St Lawrence in Hertfordshire, England. Six weeks after taking up the appointment he died, and his forty-six-year-old widow, Jisbella Georgina Lyth, became postmistress. One of the first villagers to offer condolences and support to Jisbella was Bernard Shaw, world-famous playwright and polemicist, winner of the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature, and Ayot resident since 1906. Thus began a close business and personal relationship that endured until Shaw's death in 1950. Soon after his death, an Irish writer named Romie Lambkin moved to Ayot. Fascinated not only by Jisbella's accounts of Shaw, but also by her absorbing and often moving pre-Ayot experiences--in menial jobs in turn-of-the-century England; as a nanny and teacher in Hong Kong, the United States, and Canada; and during her sometime desperate search to find employment for herself and her ailing husband in England during the 1920s' depression--Romie wrote Jisbella's life story. Rejected by publishers at the time, Jisbella's memoir has now been published with Romie Lambkin's original preface, and an introduction and extensive explanatory notes by Shaw scholar Leonard Conolly. The publication finally gives Jisbella Lyth her due, not just as a crucial mainstay to Shaw during his declining years, but also as a courageous, determined, independent, and entrepreneurial woman in her own right. She died in 1964 and is buried with her husband in Ayot St Lawrence.
