Chronicling an overhaul of the visual communication system" of Swiss train signage
In 1980, the Swiss Federal Railways contracted one of their country's leading graphic designers, Josef Mьller-Brockmann (1914-96), to overhaul the design of their train stations' signage, a project that resulted in a "visual information system" using intuitive pictograms to orient rail passengers, doing so largely without the aid of language.
Mьller-Brockmann's manual, expanded in 1992, is a complex, large-scale design project that met its users' needs through its emphatic rationalism and consistency. This reprint in English translation--part of Lars Mьller's XX The Century of Print series--makes the manual accessible for the first time to a broader public, and is one of the most significant projects by this legendary designer, well known for his posters and the influential magazine he founded, New Graphic Design (1958-65). This 200-page edition features a transparent PVC jacket, an interview with the contemporary Swiss graphic designer Peter Spalinger and text by curator Andres Janser.

Описание: The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), within the Department of Homeland Security, screens or oversees the screening of over 650 million air passengers annually at over 450 airports nationwide, and attempts to balance its aviation security mission with the freedom of movement for people and commerce. In 2011, TSA began developing new security procedures intended to strengthen security and improve the passenger experience by shortening lines and wait times. These new procedures apply risk-based, intelligence-driven screening concepts and enhance the use of technology to determine passenger risk prior to travel. As part of its responsibilities for securing civil aviation, TSA ensures that all passengers and their accessible property are screened and prohibits individuals from carrying onto aircraft items that it determines to be a threat. TSA maintains a public list of such items, known as the Prohibited Items List (PIL), and updates it as necessary. This book examines, among other things, how TSA has developed, implemented, and used expedited screening; how TSA assesses passenger risk; and the extent to which TSA has determined the Managed Inclusion systems effectiveness. Furthermore, the book examines on what basis TSA modifies the PIL and the extent to which TSA assessed risk when considering recent modifications to the PILl; and the extent to which TSA involved stakeholders when considering these modifications.

Описание: Through much of the nineteenth century, steam-powered ships provided one of the most reliable and comfortable transportation options in the United States, becoming a critical partner in railroad expansion and the heart of a thriving recreation industry. The aesthetic, structural, and commercial peak of the steamboat era occurred on the Great Lakes, where palatial ships created memories and livelihoods for millions while carrying passengers between the region’s major industrial ports of Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Toronto. By the mid-twentieth century, the industry was in steep decline, and today North America’s rich and entertaining steamboat heritage has been largely forgotten. In Floating Palaces of the Great Lakes, Joel Stone revisits this important era of maritime history, packed with elegance and adventure, politics and wealth, triumph and tragedy. This story of Great Lakes travelers and the beautiful fl oating palaces they engendered will engage historians and history buffs alike, as well as genealogists, regionalists, and researchers.

Описание: At the turn of the twentieth century, the US-Mexico border was home to some of the largest and most technologically advanced industrial copper mines. Mining the Borderlands argues that this was only possible because of the emergence of mining engineers - a distinct technocratic class of professionals who connected capital, labour, and expertise.
