Описание: The Directors Prism investigates how and why three of Russias most innovative directors— Vsevelod Meyerhold, Alexander Tairov, and Sergei Eisenstein—used the fantastical tales of German Romantic writer E. T. A. Hoffmann to reinvent the rules of theatrical practice. Because the rise of the director and the Russian cult of Hoffmann closely coincided, Posner argues, many characteristics we associate with avant-garde theater—subjective perspective, breaking through the fourth wall, activating the spectator as a co-creator—become uniquely legible in the context of this engagement. Posner examines the artistic poetics of Meyerholds grotesque, Tairovs mime-drama, and Eisensteins theatrical attraction through production analyses, based on extensive archival research, that challenge the notion of theater as a mirror to life, instead viewing the director as a prism through whom life is refracted. A resource for scholars and practitioners alike, this groundbreaking study provides a fresh, provocative perspective on experimental theater, intercultural borrowings, and the nature of the creative process.

Описание: John Hirsch arrived in Winnipeg in 1947, a 17-year-old Hungarian orphan of the Holocaust, knowing no English. Ten years later, he cofounded the Manitoba Theatre Centre, establishing a model for regional theatres across North America. This comprehensive biography traces Hirschs life, from his difficult childhood to his eventual professional success, as he went on to direct award-winning productions in Los Angeles, New York City, and Toronto--from Guys and Dolls to The Tempest --and work with actors such as Anthony Hopkins and Maggie Smith. Revealing why Hirsch was notorious for his fiery temper and budget-blowing sets, the book details his stormy four years as CBCs head of TV drama in the 1970s and his even more volatile tenure as artistic director at the Stratford Festival from 1981 to 1985.

Описание: The concept of the public sphere, as first outlined by German philosopher Jurgen Habermas, refers to the right of all citizens to engage in debate on public issues on equal terms. In this book, Christopher B. Balme explores theatre's role in this crucial political and social function. He traces its origins and argues that the theatrical public sphere invariably focuses attention on theatre as an institution between the shifting borders of the private and public, reasoned debate and agonistic intervention. Chapters explore this concept in a variety of contexts, including the debates that led to the closure of British theatres in 1642, theatre's use of media, controversies surrounding race, religion and blasphemy, and theatre's place in a new age of globalised aesthetics. Balme concludes by addressing the relationship of theatre today with the public sphere and whether theatre's transformation into an art form has made it increasingly irrelevant for contemporary society.
