Описание:

Although her death at the tender age of 28 ended her promising literary career prematurely, Magda Isanos (1916-1944) ranks among the greatest poets in the history of Romanian literature. When Angels Sing: Poetry and Prose of Magda Isanos presents, for the first-time, English language versions of her writings, revealing their beauty, sensitivity, and aura of mysticism, along with a premonition of impending doom.

Born in Iași, in northeastern Romania, Magda was raised in Chișinău (in what is now Moldova) before she returned to the city of her birth to attend the University of Iași. While a student there, Magda became active in the most important literary circle of the era, centered around the journal nsemnări ieșene. This group included many of the greatest literary voices of Romanias version of the lost generation, among them George Top rceanu, Mihail Sadoveanu, Eusebiu Camilar (her future husband), and Mihai Codreanu.

One of the most remarkable female voices of her generation, the poetry and prose of Magda Isanos mirror the troubled era in which she lived, as well as the tragedy of her own life. The themes expounded in her literary works are universal. From a sense of impending doom, decrying the horrors of war, to a longing for peace, and a boundless hope for a brighter future for all of humanity, her literary creations reflect a wide spectrum of emotions.

When Angels Sing is the first English language edition of poems and prose by this remarkable Romanian writer. It includes an introduction on the poets life and work by Dr. A.K. Brackob, along with a postscript by the poets late daughter, Elisabeta Isanos. A series of original illustrations by talented young Romanian artist, Alexandra Chiriță give visual expression to the literary creations of Magda Isanos in this beautiful volume, making When Angels Sing a book that belongs in any representative collection of world literature.

The Door is an unsettling exploration of the relationship between two very different women. Magda is a writer, educated, married to an academic, public-spirited, with an on-again-off-again relationship to Hungary's Communist authorities. Emerence is a peasant, illiterate, impassive, abrupt, seemingly ageless. She lives alone in a house that no one else may enter, not even her closest relatives. She is Magda's housekeeper and she has taken control over Magda's household, becoming indispensable to her. And Emerence, in her way, has come to depend on Magda. They share a kind of love--at least until Magda's long-sought success as a writer leads to a devastating revelation.

Len Rix's prizewinning translation of The Door at last makes it possible for American readers to appreciate the masterwork of a major modern European writer.

Описание: Miss Jozsa brings us more stories from the private diaries of Dr. Watson, deciding this time to concentrate on the distaff side of the multitude of characters that crossed Holmes and Watson's path. In Bad Habits, a nun is murdered on her way to see Holmes. During the investigation, Holmes, despite knowing there was a killer loose and while at his most vigilant is stabbed and thrown off a moving train. Watson finds him barely conscious and muttering "angel face." The only clue they have to go on to catch his attacker. In The Deadly Romeo, we meet the charming and unusual Miss Sabrina Sinclair, an intelligent, independent woman and determined spinster. She has fears that her sister is about to marry a man who is only after her money. The fact that the sister no longer has much money makes Holmes fear for Sabrina's life for if she dies her sister inherits. He and Watson infiltrate her household, Watson as an attending physician to an ill maid, and Holmes as Sabrina's love just arrived from the continent. After thwarting several attempts on her life, Robert Hill (the sister's fianc ) is apprehended, and Sabrina is shocked to learn her sister Rose was a willing participant in the attempts on her life. In Retribution, when Holmes is summoned to the Yard to identify the body of Dr. Watson, he little realizes that it is the start of a prolonged period of anxiety, torture and uncertainty as he and his family are targeted by an unknown enemy. The tension escalates as his brother Sherrinford is murdered and the Holmes estate burned to the ground. Rats in a Trap brings the return of Sabrina Sinclair, as both Holmes and she are targeted by an unknown antagonist. Holmes is tormented by an influx of female clients with spurious cases and ludicrous offers to the point where he is at the end of his tether. When he learns this harassment is due to an advertisement and that the person that posted it was Miss Sinclair he completely loses his cool, only to later learn she's been impersonated. For her part when she receives a fallacious gift purporting to come from Holmes they join forces to find out who is behind it. The irritating jokes become deadly when Sabrina is abducted. In Revelations at the Diogenes Club, Mycroft is celebrating his 50th birthday and the 25th anniversary of the Diogenes club, the only time when members can mix, mingle and socialize. With the wine flowing and all in a mellow mood, Watson learns that all the members of the club have one thing in common-their mistrust of women. Mycroft tells of his one mistake in trusting a woman, while Sherlock finally tells Watson the story of Ricoletti and his abominable wife. Finally in The Marriage of Sherlock Holmes he has the most terrifying fright of his life when he is tricked into getting married. The question is will he stay married?

Описание: Born in Hungary in 1927, Magda Hollander-Lafon was among the 437,000 Jews deported from Hungary between May and July 1944. Magda, her mother, and her younger sister survived a three-day deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau; there, she was considered fit for work and so spared, while her mother and sister were sent straight to their deaths.Hollander-Lafon recalls an experience she had in Birkenau: “A dying woman gestured to me: as she opened her hand to reveal four scraps of moldy bread, she said to me in a barely audible voice, ‘Take it. You are young. You must live to be a witness to what is happening here. You must tell people so that this never happens again in the world.’ I took those four scraps of bread and ate them in front of her. In her look I read both kindness and release. I was very young and did not understand what this act meant, or the responsibility that it represented.”Years later, the memory of that woman’s act came to the fore, and Magda Hollander-Lafon could be silent no longer. In her words, she wrote her book not to obey the duty of remembering but in loyalty to the memory of those women and men who disappeared before her eyes. Her story is not a simple memoir or chronology of events. Instead, through a series of short chapters, she invites us to reflect on what she has endured. Often centered on one person or place, the scenes of brutality and horror she describes are intermixed with reflections of a more meditative cast. Four Scraps of Bread is both historical and deeply evocative, melancholic, and at times poetic in nature.Following the text is a “Historical Note” with a chronology of the author’s life that complements her kaleidoscopic style. After liberation and a period in transit camps, she arrived in Belgium, where she remained. Eventually, she chose to be baptized a Christian and pursued a career as a child psychologist. The author records a journey through extreme suffering and loss that led to radiant personal growth and a life of meaning. As she states: ""Today I do not feel like a victim of the Holocaust but a witness reconciled with myself.” Her ability to confront her experiences and free herself from her trauma allowed her to embrace a life of hope and peace. Her account is, finally, an exhortation to us all to discover life-giving joy.
