Erving Goffman (1922 - 1982) was a Canadian-born sociologist and writer and is considered one of the most influential American sociologists of his era. In 2007 he was listed by The Times Higher Education Guide as the 6th most-cited author in the humanities and social sciences, behind Anthony Giddens and ahead of J rgen Habermas. Goffman was the 73rd president of the American Sociological Association. His best-known contribution to social theory is his study of symbolic interaction in the form of dramaturgical analysis that began with his 1956 book, "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life." Goffman's other major works include "Asylums" (1961), "Stigma" (1963), "Interaction Ritual" (1967), "Frame Analysis" (1974), and "Forms of Talk" (1981). His major areas of study included sociology of everyday life, social interaction, social construction of self, social organization (framing) of experience, and particular elements of social life such as total institutions and stigmas.

Описание: A notable contribution to our understanding of ourselves. This book explores the realm of human behavior in social situations and the way that we appear to others. Dr. Goffman uses the metaphor of theatrical performance as a framework. Each person in everyday social intercourse presents himself and his activity to others, attempts to guide and cotnrol the impressions they form of him, and employs certain techniques in order to sustain his performance, just as an actor presents a character to an audience. The discussions of these social techniques offered here are based upon detailed research and observation of social customs in many regions.

Описание: Presents an analysis of the structures of social encounters from the perspective of the dramatic performance. This title shows us how people use such `fixed props` as houses, clothes, and job situations; how they combine in teams resembling secret societies; and, how they adopt discrepant roles and communicate out of character.

A RIVETING, GROUNDBREAKING ACCOUNT OF HOW THE WAR ON CRIME HAS TORN APART INNER-CITY COMMUNITIES
Forty years in, the tough on crime turn in American politics has spurred a prison boom of historic proportions that disproportionately affects Black communities. It has also torn at the lives of those on the outside. As arrest quotas and high tech surveillance criminalize entire blocks, a climate of fear and suspicion pervades daily life, not only for young men entangled in the legal system, but for their family members and working neighbors.
Alice Goffman spent six years in one Philadelphia neighborhood, documenting the routine stops, searches, raids, and beatings that young men navigate as they come of age. In the course of her research, she became roommates with Mike and Chuck, two friends trying to make ends meet between low wage jobs and the drug trade. Like many in the neighborhood, Mike and Chuck were caught up in a cycle of court cases, probation sentences, and low level warrants, with no clear way out. We observe their girlfriends and mothers enduring raids and interrogations, "clean" residents struggling to go to school and work every day as the cops chase down neighbors in the streets, and others eking out a living by providing clean urine, fake documents, and off the books medical care.
This fugitive world is the hidden counterpoint to mass incarceration, the grim underside of our nation's social experiment in punishing Black men and their families. While recognizing the drug trade's damage, On The Run reveals a justice system gone awry: it is an exemplary work of scholarship highlighting the failures of the War on Crime, and a compassionate chronicle of the families caught in the midst of it.
"A remarkable feat of reporting . . . The level of detail in this book and Goffman's ability to understand her subjects' motivations are astonishing--and riveting."--The New York Times Book Review

Описание: Fast, furious and darkly funny, Takeover is an outrageous picture of a corporate buyout from the viewpoint of a band of creative misfits whose world is turned upside-down in the process. Some takeovers are hostile. This one is ridiculous. If you've ever had to attend a motivational meeting... If you've ever heard the words "everyone's job is safe"... If you've ever been told "we're one big happy family" one day and found that the family is being sold the next... Then you will recognize the morbid humor running through this satire set in the world of movie stars and rock gods. Secret meetings, back-stabbing bosses and spontaneous backroom sex... It's just another day of work - maybe the last day of work - in Takeover. Welcome to Stellar Video. You've been taken over.

Описание: HEARTLESS CRUELTY is A twisted murder mystery. A passionate romance. A tale of political and moral corruption set in the not-so-idyllic Jersey shore town of Atlantis. The first in a series of novels about a complex, flawed, courageous everyday hero. William Bachman is a champion for his students, and for the real, effective, life-saving power of the written word. HEARTLESS CRUELTY will appeal to anyone who, as an adult or a teenager, has ever spent time in a high school classroom. Despite Mr. Bachman's protestation that "...heroism is a myth ...There were protagonists, not heroes," anyone who can recall a teacher who stood out as particularly caring and wise will recognize the potential for heroism in that iconic figure. Anyone who teaches or has taught may find something of his or her best self in Mr. Bachman. If you remember a special teacher who changed your life, you will enjoy reading HEARTLESS CRUELTY, the first book in the Mr. Bachman series.

Описание: In a brilliant series of books about social behavior, including The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Asylums, and Stigma, Erving Goffman has exposed all that is at stake when people meet face to face. Goffman's work, once of the great intellectual achievements of our time, is an endlessly fascinating commentary on how we enact ourselves by our responses to and our readings of other people. From the exemplary opening essay of Interaction Ritual, "On Face-Work," --a full account of the extraordinary repertoire of maneuvers we employ in social encounters in order to "save face"--to the final, and classic, essay "Where the Action Is,"--an examination of people in risky occupations and situations: gamblers, criminals, coal miners, stock speculators--Goffman astounds us with the unexpected richness and complexity of brief encounters between people. For Goffman, as for Freud, the extreme cases are of interest because of the light they shed on the normal: The study of the trapeze artist is worthwhile because each of us is on the wire from time to time.
