Описание: Shadows on the wall Noises down the hal lLife doesn't frighten me at all Maya Angelou's brave, defiant poem celebrates the courage within each of us, young and old. From the scary thought of panthers in the park to the unsettling scene of a new classroom, fearsome images are summoned and dispelled by the power of faith in ourselves. Angelou's strong words are matched by the daring vision of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose childlike style reveals the powerful emotions and fanciful imaginings of childhood. Together, Angelou's words and Basquiat's paintings create a place where every child, indeed every person, may experience his or her own fearlessness. Celebrating its successful 25 years in print, this brilliant introduction to poetry and contemporary art features brief, updated biographies of Angelou and Basquiat, an afterword from the editor, and a fresh new look. A selected bibliography of Angelou's books and a selected museum listing of Basquiat's works open the door to further inspiration through the fine arts."Originally published in 1993, this children's book is still as relevant as it ever was [. . . ] For the 25th anniversary of its original publishing date, Life Doesn't Frighten Me has been re-released by Abrams Books. While Angelou claimed that she wrote the poem "for all children who whistle in the dark and who refuse to admit that they're frightened out of their wits", its staying power over the past two-and-a-half decades proves it's certainly relevant for any age." Dazed Digital "We celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Maya Angelou's book "Life Doesn't Frighten Me". Angelou's original poem, Life Doesn't Frighten Me At All, was published in 1978. In 1993 with the vision and creativity of Sara Jane Boyers the poem was paired with the work of the late American artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat renown for his poetry, music, graffiti and paintings. "In the poem, her strong words of self-confidence and strength resounded when paired with Basquiat's passionate, expressive paintings. Today, 25 years after LIFE was first published, I am so proud and pleased that readers have treasured this book all these years. LIFE was the first book that I created, inspired by the language of painting, the art of the word and the conversations they instill in each of us." Sara Jane Boyers, Editor of LIFE Doesn't Frighten Me." Maya Angelou's newsletter "I find all of Maya Angelou's work extraordinary, especially the way in which she uses her gift to lift other souls from misery. When I'm down, I reach for this picture book which is an illustrated book with the words of her poem Life Doesn't Frighten Me. Both the poem and pictures seem to resonate with some of the heaviness of modern life, but it reminds us to keep our head up and be brave.", Stylist Magazine

Описание:

A collection of essential quotations from artistic and cultural icon Jean-Michel Basquiat

One of the most important artists of the late twentieth century, Jean-Michel Basquiat explored the interplay of words and images throughout his career, from his early days as a member of the New York City graffiti duo SAMO through his years as a celebrated painter with an instantly recognizable style. In his paintings, notebooks, and interviews, he showed himself to be a powerful and creative writer and speaker as well as image-maker. Basquiat-isms is a collection of essential quotations from this cultural icon and godfather of urban culture. In these brief, compelling, and memorable selections, taken from his interviews as well as his visual and written works, Basquiat writes and speaks about culture, his artistic persona, the art world, artistic influence, race, urban life, and many other subjects. Concise, direct, forceful, poetic, and enigmatic, Basquiat's words, like his art, continue to resonate.

Select quotations from the book:

  • "Love is a lie. Love = liar."
  • "I feel like a citizen it's time to go and come back a drifter."
  • "I cross out words so you will see them more; the fact that they are obscured makes you want to read them."
  • "I think there are a lot of people that are neglected in art, I don't know if it's because of who made the paintings or what, but, um . . . black people are never really portrayed realistically or I mean not even portrayed in modern art."
  • "It all depends who you are on what street."

Описание: Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the few artists who have achieved mythic status. His work is instantly recognizable; like Picasso, Warhol or Frida Kahlo, his look is imprinted on our psyche. But how much do we really know Basquiat? Who was he, where did he come from, where did he hang out? Desperately Seeking Basquiat lets readers explore the most significant locations of his life. We learn that he wasn't from the ghetto, but from the respectable, professional middle class Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn. He spent time in his mother's native Puerto Rico as a child. He went to a private school for a few years. And then, yes, he ran away from home and lived with the junkies sleeping rough in Washington Square Park.

On the way there are the amazing cast of characters and lovers that came in and out of Basquiat's life - not just Warhol, but Debby Harry, Madonna, William Burroughs, Versace, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring. And in the midst of all this the art dealers, impressarios and galleries that knew how to take Basquiat's talent and turn it fast into millions of dollars. We discover some unexpected places: Basquiat spent time in Modena, Italy, and a lot of time in Zurich and loved detox trips to the Far East and Hawaii; this is far from just a New York story. Later on he travelled to Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire, in search of a new direction.

Full of fascinating locations and scene photos from the heady late '70s and '80s NYC, and as with the other titles in the series, Desperately Seeking Basquiat also features great maps, short punchy texts and insightful quotes from Basquiat's contemporaries. For anyone into Basquiat, this delicious volume, with its cute format, really packs a punch. For anyone wanting to know more, much more, about the man behind some of the coolest, most iconic art of the 20th Century, it's indispensable.

Описание: An American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88) first made a name for himself as part of a graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams on the Manhattan's Lower East Side during the 1970s, a place and time that saw the coalescence of hip hop, punk, and street art cultures. By the 1980s, his neo-expressionist paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums across the globe.

Encompassing Basquiat's lifelong intensive study of the self, Basquiat: By Himself is dedicated to the expressive self-portraits he created. These portraits are regarded as being among the most important of his radical creative works, and the essays here examine some fifty specific portraits of himself, as well as the concealed reproductions of the artist that can be found in his series of likenesses of African American men. As this book reveals, these similarities were produced by a man who, himself affected by everyday racism, identified with the heroes, saints, and martyrs he portrayed. Within these key works, we can see Basquiat's focus on identity, discrimination, and prejudice to capitalism, the market, and oppression.

Featuring 120 color images, Basquiat: By Himself is the first book to examine the central position Basquiat's self-portraits hold within his oeuvre and sheds new light on the works of this intriguing artist.

Описание:

How hip-hop culture and graffiti electrified the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat and his contemporaries in 1980s New York

In the early 1980s, art and writing labeled as graffiti began to transition from New York City walls and subway trains onto canvas and into art galleries. Young artists who freely sampled from their urban experiences and their largely Black, Latinx and immigrant histories infused the downtown art scene with expressionist, pop and graffiti-inspired compositions.

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88) became the galvanizing, iconic frontrunner of this transformational and insurgent movement in contemporary American art, which resulted in an unprecedented fusion of creative energies that defied longstanding racial divisions. Writing the Future features Basquiat's works in painting, sculpture, drawing, video, music and fashion, alongside works by his contemporaries--and sometimes collaborators--A-One, ERO, Fab 5 Freddy, Futura, Keith Haring, Kool Koor, LA2, Lady Pink, Lee Qui ones, Rammellzee and Toxic. Throughout the 1980s, these artists fueled new directions in fine art, design and music, reshaping the predominantly white art world and driving the now-global popularity of hip-hop culture.

Writing the Future, published to accompany a major exhibition, contextualizes Basquiat's work in relation to his peers associated with hip-hop culture. It also marks the first time Basquiat's extensive, robust and reflective portraiture of his Black and Latinx friends and fellow artists has been given prominence in scholarship on his oeuvre. With contributions from Carlo McCormick, Liz Munsell, Hua Hsu, J. Faith Almiron and Greg Tate, Writing the Future captures the energy, inventiveness and resistance unleashed when hip-hop hit the city.
