Описание: The global context in the last few decades, particularly after 11 September 2001, has changed phenomenally, affecting every aspect of international relations. West Asia, being a strategically important region, has been greatly affected by these changes. At the same time, the developments within the region have also shaped the broader dynamics of international relations and politics. It is from this two-way process that one can see the emergence of a new regional architecture in West Asia. The broad features of this architecture include the demand for a new ‘social contract’ between the autocratic regimes and the hitherto suppressed people subsequent to the popular uprisings across the Arab world, the discourse on Islam and democracy, the ISIS phenomenon, the devastating and brutal civil war in Syria, the strategic rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran for regional leadership, the new direction which the unresolved Palestine question is taking and its implications for Israel itself, the declining oil revenue, the changing pattern of involvement of external powers, etc. The emerging regional order in West Asia also poses many challenges for India which has huge stakes in the region stemming from the multi-dimensional engagement between the two. The chapters contained in this volume, organised through seven thematic sections, reflect these wide range of issues and also provide perspectives of Indian scholars engaged in studying the West Asian region. The volume would be useful for general readers, experts and policy makers interested in understanding the fast changing developments in West Asia and its impact on India-West Asia relations.

Описание: Would it be possible to provide people with a basic income as a right? The idea has a long history. This book draws on two pilot schemes conducted in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh, in which thousands of men, women and children were provided with an unconditional monthly cash payment. In a context in which the Indian government at national and state levels spends a vast amount on subsidies and selective schemes that are chronically expensive, inefficient, inequitable and subject to extensive corruption, there is scope for switching at least some of the spending to a modest basic income. This book explores what would be likely to happen if this were done. The book draws on a series of evaluation surveys conducted over the course of the eighteen months in which the main pilot was in operation, supplemented with detailed case studies of individuals and families. It looks at the impact on health and nutrition, on schooling, on economic activity, women’s agency and the welfare of those with disabilities. Above all, the book considers whether or not a basic income could be transformative, in not only improving individual and family welfare but in promoting economic growth and development, as well as having an emancipatory effect for people long mired in conditions of poverty and economic insecurity.
Автор: Kama Maclean Название: British India, White Australia: Overseas Indians, Intercolonial Relations and the Empire ISBN: 1742236219 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781742236216 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 20900.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: ‘Commonwealth, curry and cricket’ has become the belaboured phrase by which Australia seeks to emphasise its shared colonial heritage with India and improve bilateral relations in the process. Yet it is misleading because the legacy of empire differs in profound ways in both countries. Indians may be the fastest-growing group of migrants to Australia, but they have long been present.
British India, White Australia explores connections between Australia and India through the lens of the British Empire, by tracing the lives of people of Indian descent in Australia, from Australian Federation to Indian independence. The White Australia Policy was firmly in place while both countries were part of the British Empire. Australia was nominally self-governing but still attached very strongly to Britain; India was driven by the desire for independence. The racist immigration policies of dominions like Australia, and Britain’s inability to reform them, further animated nationalist sentiments in India.
Kama Maclean has undertaken extensive archival research in all three countries and the book includes cartoons and photographs, many of them shocking, that reflect attitudes of the time. In this original, landmark work she calls for more meaningful dialogue and acknowledgment of the constraints placed upon Indians in Australia and those attempting to immigrate. The force of white imperialism was strong: some Australians may have found solidarity with the cause of Indian nationalism, but at the point British India ceased to exist, White Australia remained steadfast. Indians are now the fastest-growing group of migrants in Australia, yet their presence has a long history, as told in this book.
When the state and business interact effectively they can promote a more efficient allocation of scarce resources, appropriate industrial policy and a more effective and prioritised removal of key obstacles to growth, than when the two sides fail to co-operate or engage in harmful collusion. This book, based on original empirical research undertaken in Africa and India, addresses what constitutes the effectiveness of state-business relations, what explains their formation and evolution over time and whether effective state-business relations matter for economic performance.
Analysing the effects of state-business relations on economic performance at both the macro and micro levels, the book concludes that where effective state-business relations are established - either through formal or informal institutional patterns and relationships - the growth effects are generally positive. Establishing, sustaining and renewing effective state-business relations are political processes. The better organized the business community and the government are for purposes of such relations, the more effective state-business relations will be in negotiating growth enhancing policies. The book is of interest to researchers in the fields of development studies, management, economics and political science.
