Описание: Innovations in optical fiber technology are revolutionizing world communications. Newly developed fiber amplifiers allow for direct transmission of highspeed signals over transcontinental distances without the need for electronic regeneration. Optical fibers find new applications in data processing. The impact of fiber materials, devices, and systems on communications in the coming decades will create an abundance of primary literature and the need for up-todate reviews. An optical fiber is a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves. Optical fibers are used most often as a means to transmit light between the two ends of the fiber and find wide usage in fiber-optic communications, where they permit transmission over longer distances and at higher bandwidths (data rates) than wire cables. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with lesser amounts of loss; in addition, fibers are also immune to electromagnetic interference, a problem from which metal wires suffer excessively. Fibers are also used for illumination, and are wrapped in bundles so that they may be used to carry images, thus allowing viewing in confined spaces, as in the case of a fiberscope. Specially designed fibers are also used for a variety of other applications, some of them being fiber optic sensors and fiber lasers. This book entitled Current Developments in Optical Fiber Technology is a compilation of works giving contemporary improvements and advancement in optical fiber technology related to the next generation optical communication, system and network, sensor, laser, measurement, characterization and devices.

Описание: The optical fibre technology extensively benefits applications dealing with lighting, sensing and communication systems. Many enhancements have been made in the past years to reduce the fibre attenuation and to improve the fibre performance. These days, new applications have been developed over the scientific community. After several decades of commercial use, new optical fiber types are in development to improve some aspect of communications. Improvements in fiber have come in the forms of providing higher bandwidth, supporting longer distances or in conjunction with the optoelectronic devices at both ends -- reducing the overall cost of transport. One such development in the LAN fiber world is the development of wide band multimode fiber (WBMMF). This new fiber type expands the range of usable wavelengths from one to several, and enables the use of shortwave wavelength-division multiplexing in the range from 850 to 950 nanometers. Optical Fiber New Developments is a compilation of works presenting recent advances and progress in optical fiber technology related to the next generation optical communication, system and network, sensor, laser, measurement, characterisation and devices. Innovations in optical fiber technology are revolutionising world communications. Newly developed fibre amplifiers allow for direct transmission of highspeed signals over transcontinental distances without the need for electronic regeneration. Optical fibers find new applications in data processing. The impact of fiber materials, devices, and systems on communications in the coming decades will create an abundance of primary literature and the need for up-todate reviews. This book should be of immense valuable tool for researchers and practitioners working in academic institutions as well as industries.

Описание:

Simulation and modeling using numerical methods is one of the key instruments in any scientific work. In the field of photonics, a wide range of numerical methods are used for studying both fundamental optics and applications such as design, development, and optimization of photonic components. Modeling is key for developing improved photonic devices and reducing development time and cost.

Choosing the appropriate computational method for a photonics modeling problem requires a clear understanding of the pros and cons of the available numerical methods. Numerical Methods in Photonics presents six of the most frequently used methods: FDTD, FDFD, 1+1D nonlinear propagation, modal method, Green's function, and FEM.

After an introductory chapter outlining the basics of Maxwell's equations, the book includes self-contained chapters that focus on each of the methods. Each method is accompanied by a review of the mathematical principles in which it is based, along with sample scripts, illustrative examples of characteristic problem solving, and exercises. MATLAB(R) is used throughout the text.

This book provides a solid basis to practice writing your own codes. The theoretical formulation is complemented by sets of exercises, which allow you to grasp the essence of the modeling tools.
