Prior to releasing Supercell in March 2009, their works using Crypton’s technology had already become well known to Niconico users and to fan circles (doujin). The book examines these issues through the lenses of media and fan studies. The first section of the book focuses on the environmental conditions, or settings— online social media platforms, the new technology for composing, dedicated fans of the Vocaloid characters—that support the activities of these creators. The second section explores Supercell and their works as case studies of Vocaloid use. In its entirety, the book will offer an in-depth discussion of the concepts of participatory culture (Jenkins 2006), database consumption, and derivative works (Azuma 2009).
