Описание:

Since the early nineteenth century, Georgia has produced an impressive number of distinguished fiction writers, from Joel Chandler Harris, Sidney Lanier, Flannery OConnor, and Carson McCullers to such present-day voices as Alice Walker, James Dickey, and Pat Conroy.

Containing thirty-nine stories and excerpts from novels, this first volume reveals a literary legacy as rich as any the country has produced. Humorous and tragic, nostalgic and cynical, romantic and realistic, the writings gathered here represent the full range of fiction that has emerged from the states talented writers.

Over the years Georgians have written about the themes and subjects that have inspired writers across history and throughout the world: family, war, hardship, ambition, love, death, change, the search for knowledge and meaning. As Hugh Ruppersburg notes in his introduction, however, the state has provided its writers with a distinct history, culture, and sense of place. Georgias frontier and agricultural past, its Civil War experience, the rise of its cities and industries and the subsequent decline of rural traditions, and the civil rights movement have all played a part in shaping its distinctive literary landscape.

Georgia Voices is a three-volume anthology highlighting the impressive achievements of Georgia writers in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

Описание: The fifteen stories in this volume include the only collection of short fiction Woolf published in her lifetime, the eight stories published as `Monday and Tuesday`, together with seven later stories. Without these bold and experimental forays into the short story she would never have become the great modernist novelist. Essential to her development as a novelist, these stories are among the most interesting and accomplished fictions she wrote.

Описание: As the lights that have guided us go out, people begin to wander in the twilight, seeking their place of belonging. In these stories, set in recent times, but before the blinding glare of social media, Roger Scruton describes the remembered landscapes of people who are not where they belong, and not quite where they wished to be. With unfailing lightness of touch, Scruton portrays characters who cannot let go of the past: Yusuf, set on a path of revenge that bears no relation to his teenage life; Bill who wanders the world in his imagination but cannot leave his suburban living room; Sarah, whose insane mission to save the Lebanese Christians brings disaster to the only person she loves; Veronica, whose determination to look the truth in the face wraps her young life in deception -- all of them lost to their surroundings and yet touchingly seeking a home in them. For lovers of the short story, these exquisite pictures of modern people will be cherished for their insight and poetic drama.

A young translator living in Toronto frequently travels abroad--to Hong Kong, Macau, Prague, Tokyo--often with his unnamed lover. In restaurants and hotel rooms, the couple begin telling folk tales to each other, perhaps as a way to fill the undefined space between them. Theirs is a comic and enigmatic relationship in which emotions are often muted and sometimes masked by verbal play and philosophical questions, and further complicated by the woman's frequent unexplained disappearances.

You Are Eating an Orange. You Are Naked. is an intimate novel of memory and longing that challenges Western tropes and Orientalism. Embracing the playful surrealism of Haruki Murakami and the atmospheric narratives of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai, Sheung-King's debut is at once lyrical and punctuated, and wholly unique, and marks the arrival of a bold new voice in Canadian literature.

Praise for You Are Eating an Orange. You Are Naked.:

Sheung-King has written a wonderfully unexpected and maverick love story but also a novel of ideas that hopscotches between Toronto, Macau, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Prague. It is enchanting, funny, and a joy to read. --Kyo Maclear, author of Birds Art Life

A tale that oozes the horror and confusion of love, while staying somehow still desperately romantic. It gives the cold shoulder to the dominant gaze and its demands to control the Asian body, carving out a thrilling space beyond whiteness. I didn't want it to end. --Thea Lim, author of An Ocean of Minutes, finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize

Описание: In Writing Surfaces , derek beaulieu and Lori Emerson present a collection of John Riddells work. Riddells poems and short stories are a remarkable mix of largely typewriter-based concrete poetry mixed with fiction and drawings. Riddells oeuvre fell out of popular attention, but it has recently garnered interest among poets and critics engaged with media studies (especially studies of the typewriter) and experimental writing. Riddell is best known for his short fiction pieces "H" and "Pope Leo: El Elope," a pair of graphic fictions written in collaboration with, or dedicated to, bpNichol. However, his work moves well beyond comic strips into a series of radical fictions. Riddells work embraces game play, unreadability and illegibility, procedural work, non-representational narrative, photocopy degeneration, collage, handwritten texts, and gestural work. His self-aware and meta-textual short fiction challenges the limits of machine-based composition and his reception as a media-based poet. With media studies increasingly turning to "media archaeology" and the reading and study of antiquated, analogue-based modes of composition (as typified by the photocopier and the fax machine as well as the typewriter), Riddell is a perfect candidate for further appreciation and study by new generations of readers, authors, and scholars.

Описание: Just as E. M. Forster's novel of gay love, Maurice, remained unpublished throughout his lifetime, Glenway Wescott's long story ""A Visit to Priapus"" was also destined to be a posthumous work, buried from 1938 until this century in Wescott's massive archive of manuscripts, journals, notebooks, and letters. The autobiographical story is about a literary man, frustrated in love, who puts aside his pride and makes a date with a young artist in Maine. Lavishly rendered in Wescott's elegant prose, the tale is explicit where it needs to be, but—as is typical of Wescott—it is filled with descriptive beauty and introspective lessons about sex and sexuality, love and creativity.Previously published in anthology form in the United Kingdom, ""A Visit to Priapus"" is presented for the first time in book form in America, containing previously uncollected stories, including three never before published. The result is a candid portrayal of the gifted but enigmatic writer who was famous in youth and remained a perceptive and compassionate voice throughout his long life. Drawn together from midcentury literary journals and magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, as well as from Wescott's papers, the stories were inspired by his life, from childhood to old age, from Wisconsin farm country to New York, London, Germany, and Paris.

In These Times the Home Is a Tired Place

Описание: When an unwed pregnant woman is pressured to get married by her boyfriend, parents, and the entire culture around her, she sees a feverish intensity emanating from the path to domesticity, a "paved path shaded by thick-trunked trees, lined with trim grass and manicured mansions, where miniature houses play mailboxes and animals play lawn ornaments and people play happiness." Jessica Hollander's debut collection exposes a culture that glorifies and disparages traditional domesticity, where people's confusion, apathy, and anxiety about the institutions of marriage and family often drive them to self-destruction. The world in Hollander's nineteen stories appears at once familiar and vividly unsettling, with undercurrents of anger and violence attached to everyday objects and spaces: a pink room is "a woman exploded," home smells "of laundered clothes and gas from the grill," and the sun "is so bright the sky fills with over-exposure, wilting the corners to orange, to red, to black." Here people adopt extreme and erratic behavior: hack at furniture, have affairs with high school students, fantasize about sex with "monsters," laden flower bouquets with messages of hate; but these self-destructive acts and fantasies feel strangely like a form of growth or enlightenment, or at least the only form that's available to them. As characters become girlfriends, wives, husbands, and mothers, they struggle within their roles, either fighting to escape them or struggling to "play" them correctly, but always concerned with the loss of individuality, of being swallowed up by society's expectations and becoming "a mother" or "a wife" instead of remaining themselves. "Hollander's debut collection effectively fuses the common (childhood adventures, unhappy adults) with the bizarre (a grandmother obsessed with buttons, a gym full of people refusing to wear clothes) to create an intriguing volume. . . . The details in these stories ring true and are recognizable amid the insanity. A potent work from a strong new literary voice."-Publishers Weekly starred review "These are human tales of vigorously individual characters living with intensity. The author's ear for revealing dialogue and double-edged humor ground these stories in a reality worth enduring. The characters connect despite suspicion and betrayal, beyond blood, circumstance or embarrassment at their own ridiculous humanity. Each piece is powered by a deep, slow boiling jubilation in the moment-to-moment, line-by-line fact of taking breath."-Katherine Dunn, author of Geek Love and judge JESSICA HOLLANDER grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and received her BA from the University of Michigan. She holds an MFA from the University of Alabama. Her stories have appeared in over fifty journals, including The Cincinnati Review, The Journal, Quarterly West, and Web Conjunctions, and she will be anthologized in The Lineup: 25 Provocative Women Writers. She teaches at the University of Alabama.

Описание:

Love beneath the Napalm is James D. Redwood’s collection of deeply affecting stories about the enduring effects of colonialism and the Vietnamese War over the course of a century on the Vietnamese and the American and French foreigners who became inextricably connected with their fate. These finely etched, powerful tales span a wide array of settings, from the former imperial capital of Hue at the end of the Nguyen Dynasty, to Hanoi after the American pullout from Vietnam, the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in 1979, contemporary San Francisco, and Schenectady, New York.

Redwood reveals the inner lives of the Vietnamese characters and also shows how others appear through their eyes. Some of the images and characters in Love beneath the Napalm—the look that Mr. Tu's burned and scarred face always inflicts on strangers in the title story; attorney and American Vietnam War–veteran Carlton Griswold's complicated relationship with Mary Thuy in "The Summer Associate"; Phan Van Toan's grief and desire, caught between two worlds in "The Stamp Collector"—provide a haunting, vivid portrayal of lives uprooted by conflict. Throughout, readers will find moments that cut to the quick, exposing human resilience, sorrow, joy, and the traumatic impact of war on all those who are swept up in it.
