Описание: What makes a Chinese poem “Chinese”? Some call modern Chinese poetry insufficiently Chinese, saying it is so influenced by foreign texts that it has lost the essence of Chinese culture as known in premodern poetry. Yet that argument overlooks how premodern regulated verse was itself created in imitation of foreign poetics. Looking at Bian Zhilin and Yang Lian in the twentieth century alongside medieval Chinese poets such as Wang Wei, Du Fu, and Li Shangyin, The Organization of Distance applies the notions of foreignization and nativization to Chinese poetry to argue that the impression of poetic Chineseness has long been a product of translation, from forces both abroad and in the past.

Описание: This intellectual history project, which has been conducted primarily by gathering the individualized oral history of senior scholars who work on China, Chinese civilisation, and Chinese people in different parts of the world, has proceeded with the support of various national and private teams since 2005. Although attempting a grand scheme of analysis or even deciding if such a scheme is desirable at all is still premature, comparative analyses using interviews have already produced a significant body of thought, which the present and future generations could reflect on. The current publication assembles a number of possibilities provided by scholars who have actually interviewed their senior colleagues as well as by interviewees who recollect their intellectual growth to enrich the project. Their approaches and concerns vary and overlap with one another in distinct aspects, indicating an evolving agenda of never-ending inspiration. Nevertheless, with the initial problem in mind, which is to discern the mutual constitution of China, China scholars, and China scholarship, the following introduction serves to inductively present the rationales of this publication. The expost notion of post-Chineseness will be its main theme.

Описание:

Colonial legacies in knowledge production affect the way the world is represented and understood today. However, the subject is rarely attended. The book, Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Studies of China and Chineseness: Unlearning Binaries, Strategizing Self, is about the colonial construction of intellectual perspectives of the colonized population in terms of the latter's approach to China and Chineseness in the modern world. Relying on the available oral histories of senior China scholars primarily in Asia, authors from various postcolonial and colonial sites present these multiple routs of self-constitution and reconstitution through the use of China and Chineseness as category. The revealed manipulation of this third category, romantically as well as antagonistically, is easier than straightforward self-reflection for us all to accept that, coming to identities and relations, none, even subaltern, is politically innocent or capable of epistemological monopoly. Through comparative studies, it shows a way of self-understanding that does not always require discursive construction of border or cultural consumption of any specific "other".

With US-China rivalry possibly lasting for decades, this book offers extremely rich and contrasting practices from the subaltern worlds for anyone in a quest for humanist alternatives. This interdisciplinary and transnational project contributes to post-colonial studies, cultural studies, international relations, China and Chinese studies, and the comparative histories of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

Описание: This book explores the personal experiences of professionals who are a part of the post-colonial and late-industrializing reality in the global value chain in Singapore. Looking at Chinese Singaporean employees at a French multi-national firm, the author explores the evolving social constructions of ‘Chineseness’. Sociologist Manuel Castells once hailed Singapore as ‘the only true Leninist project that has survived’, and Lee revisits the Singapore ‘social laboratory’, addressing recent dialectics that transpire within the global political economy. Currently, professional actors need to address the demands of dual hegemony in response to China’s rise in the Western-dominated capitalist political economy. Underlying these constructions are enduring dispositions that mediate interpretations of professionalism. The author puts to test the potential for change, surveying a large cohort of teachers as makers of future professionals. The question is, does change occur in the domain of practice or the habitus, if it is possible in the first place? The book will be of interest to scholars and students with an interest in Sociology, Identity and Ethnicity, Business Management, Globalisation, Organizational Sociology and Sociology of Education.

Описание: Nearly eleven million Chinese migrants live outside of China. While many of these faces of China’s globalization headed for the popular Western destinations of the United States, Australia and Canada, others have been lured by the booming Asian economies. Compared with pre-1949 Chinese migrants, most are wealthier, motivated by a variety of concerns beyond economic survival and loyal to the communist regime. The reception of new Chinese migrants, however, has been less than warm in some places. In Singapore, tensions between Singaporean-Chinese and new Chinese arrivals present a puzzle: why are there tensions between ethnic Chinese settlers and new Chinese arrivals despite similarities in phenotype, ancestry and customs? Drawing on rich empirical data from ethnography and digital ethnography, Contesting Chineseness: Nationality, Class, Gender and New Chinese Migrants investigates this puzzle and details how ethnic Chinese subjects negotiate their identities in an age of contemporary Chinese migration and China’s ascent.
