Описание:
1 Corinthians 5:5 is a curious passage which has been variously interpreted by scholars. For some, it denotes a magical curse which is designed to cause the physical death of the sinner. Others have found such an interpretation unpersuasive. Instead, they maintain that Pauls words at verse five are to be understood as a metaphor for exclusion from the Corinthian community. So, the errant Corinthian is not to die by a curse, but is to be excluded.

This work argues for the former interpretation by marshalling a range of the most recent-specialised-magical material, which has not been considered by other works in relation to 1 Corinthians 5. It fully acknowledges the weaknesses of previous magical interpretations, and metaphorical approaches to the passage. Instead, it presents a fresh magical reading of not only 1 Corinthians 5:5, but the whole of 1 Corinthians 5-within its wider context of the apostle Pauls letter to the Corinthians.

Описание: The divisions in the Corinthian church are catalogued by Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:12: "Each of you says, ‘I follow Paul,’ or ‘I follow Apollos,’ or ‘I follow Cephas,’ or ‘I follow Christ.’” White shows how these splits are found in the milieu of 1st-century Graeco-Roman education. By consulting relevant literary and epigraphic evidence, White develops a picture of ancient education throughout the Empire generally, and in Roman Corinth specifically. This serves as a backdrop to the situation in the Christian community, wherein some of the elite, educated members preferred Apollos to Paul as a teacher since Apollos more closely resembled other teachers of higher studies. White takes a new and different direction to other studies in the field, arguing that it is against the values inculcated through “higher education” in general that the teachers are being compared. By starting with this broader category, one that much better reflects the very eclectic nature of Graeco-Roman education, a sustained reading of 1 Corinthians 1–4 is made possible.

Описание: Are You a "Whosoever?" Whosoevers are people destined to live forever in a place beyond their wildest expectations. Whosoevers are becoming more difficult to identify today due their being mocked and persecuted by Hollywood, the mainstream media, and most of our schools and universities. However, the rewards for achieving "whosoever status" are well worth looking into How can you become a "whosoever"? Just believe (John 3:16) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Whosoevers are believers in God, the Creator of the universe, and Jesus Christ His one and only Son who exchanged His righteous for our sinfulness. Jesus paid the price for all our sins, past, present, and future. The game of life is extremely complicated and doomed to failure if you don't know all the rules. The Bible is God's use and care manual and is His means used to communicate with us today. In the past, God communicated through various prophets. Now, we have God's Word, the Bible, to help us understand and know what pleases our creator. God says that it is impossible to please Him without faith and that faith comes from hearing His Word, the Bible. Today, many people know that God hates "idol worship." However, many peoples don't realize that anything that you put in front of God, for example, family, friends, possessions, or power, is idol worship. In God's eyes, hating anyone is equivalent to murder and lust for anyone, but your spouse is adultery. That is why we need to study the Bible to help us understand God's character Everyone sins and falls short of God's standard. (Romans 3:10-12) "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." This is why everyone needs a Savior (Proverbs 14:12) "There is a way that seems right to man but in the end it leads to death." At the opposite end of the believing spectrum are the "never God" people. "Never God" people not only deny God their Creator and Jesus's sacrifice on the cross but also mock believers. The Apostle John called those who deny Jesus "antichrists." Unbelievers or antichrists will also live forever, but in an extremely hot environment. Instead of joy, there will be weeping and a gnashing of teeth. The fire in hell will burn eternally, but the occupants will never die. (John 8:31-32) "To the Jews who has believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teachings, you are my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.'"
