Описание:

In Conversation with Bessie Head shows how reading the novels and letters of Botswanas most influential writer, Bessie Head, fosters an ongoing conversation between reader and writer and is in fact a very personal undertaking. Each chapter tackles two parallel threads, the first regarding Mary S. Lederers own history of reading Head-from her first purchase of Maru, through completing a Ph.D. on Heads trilogy, through living in Botswana and connecting with various aspects of Heads life, to examining how reading Head has affected her own development as a human being. This history then ties each chapter into discussion of how Head develops her own vision of the brotherhood of man.

Alongside critically informed discussion, Heads vision is examined through the prism of specific questions. Why is madness not a useful concept for understanding Heads ideas? Why did Head say she was not a feminist, and what is the significance of male and female in her novels? What is the relationship between individual, race, and community? How can the nature of God be a clear expression of love but also an indistinct force for both good and evil? Heads novels present opportunities for personal growth, and through these conversations with her, we become different readers.

Описание:

Experimentation with the speech of characters has been hailed by G?rard Genette as “one of the main paths of emancipation in the modern novel.” Dialogue as a stylistic and narrative device is a key feature in the development of the novel as a genre, yet it is also a phenomenon little acknowledged or explored in the critical literature. Fictional Dialogue demonstrates the richness and versatility of dialogue as a narrative technique in twentieth- and twenty-first-century novels by focusing on extended extracts and sequences of utterances. It also examines how different versions of dialogue may help to normalize or idealize certain patterns and practices, thereby excluding alternative possibilities or eliding “unevenness” and differences.

Bronwen Thomas, by bringing together theories and models of fictional dialogue from a wide range of disciplines and intellectual traditions, shows how the subject raises profound questions concerning our understanding of narrative and human communication. The first study of its kind to combine literary and narratological analysis with reference to linguistic terms and models, Bakhtinian theory, cultural history, media theory, and cognitive approaches, this book is also the first to focus in depth on the dialogue novel in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and to bring together examples of dialogue from literature, popular fiction, and nonlinear narratives. Beyond critiquing existing methods of analysis, it outlines a promising new method for analyzing fictional dialogue.

Описание: Inexhaustible Beckett: even as his oeuvre continues to mark today’s literary, dramatic and other arts, the man and artist remain alive in the memories of those who knew him personally. Collected here are conversations with the author recalled by translators, scholars, artists, and theatre and media practitioners drawing on unpublished notes of meetings and uncollected (mostly) correspondence with him. Through the varied lenses of their reminiscences, readers will appreciate Beckett’s remarkable art of letter writing, his conversation punctuated by pregnant pauses, his exceptional humor and talent for friendship, and his punctilious concern for the translations, interpretations, and performance of his works. The readers of this volume will come to share the exhilaration the encounters with Beckett produced in the writers of these memoirs. Inepuisable Beckett…
