Описание: Many of the wars of the Late Republic were largely civil conflicts. There was, therefore, a tension between the traditional expectation that triumphs should be celebrated for victories over foreign enemies and the need of the great commanders to give full expression to their prestige and charisma, and to legitimize their power. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War rethinks the nature and the character of the phenomenon of civil war during the Late Republic. At the same time it focuses on a key feature of the Roman socio-political order, the triumph, and argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Significantly, the civil aspect of the war did not have to be denied. Carsten Hjort Lange provides the first study to consider the Roman triumph during the age of civil war, and argues that the idea of civil war as "normal" reflects the way civil war permeated the politics and society of the Late Roman Republic.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
No-one likes adversity and Claudia Lantos is no exception. But while the bad times are never embraced at first, adversity has enabled Claudia to reinvent herself several times to her advantage. Over a period of around 10 years, adversity struck Claudia in the form of five car accidents--of one which took her about nine months to recover from--and three concussions from sailing accidents while building her coaching business in The Netherlands and later in Australia. Claudia has turned these hard knocks into brilliant insights for her clients and an advantageous mindset for herself. This book sums up her learnings to give anyone who wants to turn adversity to their advantage new approaches, to tackle anything that is thrown at them and come out stronger.
Combining her psychological and coaching training with her corporate executive search and legal background, Claudia has built excellent insight into corporate dynamics, leadership development and behavioural issues, servicing a wide range of organisations. In the last 25 years, Claudia prides herself in having worked with executive leaders and continued to consult them, through the bigger part of their careers.
As a former national-level sports enthusiast at karate and offshore sailing, and accredited in organisational coaching, she is specialised in executive coaching for high performers in leadership roles, focused on a strengths based, behavioural change and growth mindset approach, using the adult learning principles of positive psychology.
Claudia started her career as a Lawyer in Labour Law and IP in The Netherlands, Europe in 1993, and she has been a member of country management teams based in Amsterdam and Singapore for a UK-listed professional services group, setting up new business service offerings and building and managing small teams. She successfully led her own executive coaching and executive search business in the Netherlands for eight years, before settling down in Bondi Beach, Australia in 2012.

Автор: Darius Ornston Название: Good Governance Gone Bad: How Nordic Adaptability Leads to Excess ISBN: 1501730177 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781501730177 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 30050.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание:
If we believe that the small, open economies of Nordic Europe are paragons of good governance, why are they so prone to economic crisis? In Good Governance Gone Bad, Darius Ornston provides evidence that adapting flexibly to rapid, technological change and shifting patterns of economic competition may be a great virtue, but it does not prevent countries from making strikingly poor policy choices and suffering devastating results. Home to three of the "big five" financial crises in the twentieth century, Nordic Europe in the new millennium has witnessed a housing bubble in Denmark, the collapse of the Finnish ICT industry, and the Icelandic financial crisis.
Ornston argues that the reason for these two seemingly contradictory phenomena is one and the same. The dense, cohesive relationships that enable these countries to respond to crisis with radical reform render them vulnerable to policy overshooting and overinvestment. Good Governance Gone Bad tests this argument by examining the rise and decline of heavy industry in postwar Sweden, the emergence and disruption of the Finnish ICT industry, and Iceland’s impressive but short-lived reign as a financial powerhouse as well as ten similar and contrasting cases across Europe and North America. Ornston demonstrates how small and large states alike can learn from the Nordic experience, providing a valuable corrective to uncritical praise for the "Nordic model."
In The Triumph of Improvisation, James Graham Wilson takes a long view of the end of the Cold War, from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 to Operation Desert Storm in January 1991. Drawing on deep archival research and recently declassified papers, Wilson argues that adaptation, improvisation, and engagement by individuals in positions of power ended the specter of a nuclear holocaust. Amid ambivalence and uncertainty, Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan, George Shultz, and George H. W. Bush—and a host of other actors—engaged with adversaries and adapted to a rapidly changing international environment and information age in which global capitalism recovered as command economies failed.
Eschewing the notion of a coherent grand strategy to end the Cold War, Wilson paints a vivid portrait of how leaders made choices; some made poor choices while others reacted prudently, imaginatively, and courageously to events they did not foresee. A book about the burdens of responsibility, the obstacles of domestic politics, and the human qualities of leadership, The Triumph of Improvisation concludes with a chapter describing how George H. W. Bush oversaw the construction of a new configuration of power after the fall of the Berlin Wall, one that resolved the fundamental components of the Cold War on Washington’s terms.

Описание: TENACITY is the story about the life experiences of the author, Jos Rolando Villarreal, J.D. It is an American immigration story that reflects the life stories of many immigrants who came, and continue to come from all parts of the world, to the United States of America seeking to realize the American Dream. What do present-day immigrants confront when they reach the USA and commence to navigate their journey in seeking the American dream as they define it? How can present-day immigrants to the USA confront a complex cultural system that causes bewilderment, confusion, and perplexity that on occasion hinders and impedes progress towards success? Jos Rolando Villarreal answers these challenging questions by presenting his own immigration story.American immigration life stories are basically about individuals who came or were brought to the United States out of economic necessity, hunger for better opportunities, or even worse, seeking asylum due to oppression in their country. The author's story is no different. While his life story reflects an unpleasantly rough, and at times severely cruel reality that most immigrants have confronted for centuries, it is also a story of resilience. It is a story about immigration, migration, navigation, and adaptation to change in order to realize the American dream. The author was terco (determined) and he had the tenacity to confront and overcome the myriad harsh realities and barriers faced by immigrants in order to navigate successfully toward the American dream. He feels content that he realized the American dream, as he defines it, while striving to be successful as a son, husband, father, grandfather, attorney, administrator, adjunct college professor, city mayor, staff training consultant, and best of all, as an American citizen. The author gives specific historical references to his experiences facing adversity in the areas of institutional racism in education, the criminal justice system, economics, and politics. The author gives special attention to the area of leadership development tools, such as conflict resolution and synergy, which can be used to enhance one's capacity to navigate the aforementioned adversarial situations.Being an American immigrant is a state of mind, a tangle of conundrums and contradictions, but with the end goal of becoming an American in the most transparent and purest sense. From the various identity labels of a documented immigrant, Mexican, Mexican-American, Chicano, Latino, or Hispanic, the author emerges as a quintessential American, proud of his Mexican heritage. His primary intent in writing this book is to inspire immigrants, documented and undocumented, and by extension to anyone who is related to immigrants or works with immigrants. The secondary purpose of this book is to leave a valuable legacy to his family, children, grandchildren. Through the use of memoirs of leadership and cultural competence, the author shows others how to successfully navigate the journey in the USA as immigrants. This book culminates in the author's presentation of highly effective leadership tools which can be utilized by the reader in the pursuit of the American dream, however that dream is defined.
