Описание: These concise guides for visiting Chinese teachers, host families, and host schools have been adapted from handbooks developed for the US-China Teachers Exchange Program, which was an early leader in bringing Chinese teachers to the United States and sending American teachers to China as a cultural and educational exchange. The exchange program provided the teachers a unique opportunity to improve their own language and teaching skills; deepen their understanding of another culture; and share new curriculum, pedagogy, and experiences in their home classrooms upon their return. Today, the teaching of Mandarin is expanding throughout the world through a wide range of programs and initiatives. Berkshire Publishing plans to develop and expand the guides through its online China platform, and has produced these convenient and inexpensive versions for use on ereaders.

Many Chinese language textbooks are intended mainly for people who study Chinese in formal classes and are based on assumptions that are appropriate primarily for such learners.
The words and phrases such textbooks introduce in early lessons are often those that help students function in a classroom setting. Such textbooks also assume that the learners' need to learn to read and write Chinese is as pressing as their need to speak it, so they introduce oral and written skills at the same rate.
Underlying many such textbooks is also the assumption that they will be taught by a teacher, someone who will manage and guide the students' learning process.
However, what about people who live or work in China but do not have the opportunity to study Chinese in a formal classroom setting? Such people usually need to become "street functional" in Chinese relatively quickly, so their most pressing need is for the words and phrases that will help them deal with daily life in China.
Also, during their first few trips to China, such people often have a much greater need to learn to speak and understand basic Chinese than to learn Chinese characters.
This Chinese phrasebook is intended for this special category of Chinese learners, those people who are going to work, live or sightsee in China for an extended period but who do not have the opportunity to study in a formal Chinese language program. This book aims to meet the special needs of these learners in several ways:
It introduces the words, phrases, sentence patterns, and skills that are needed most often in daily life in China.
It encourages learners to make their own choices as to where to focus their efforts; especially in regards to the question of how much time and attention to devote initially to learning to read and write Chinese.
It recognizes that learners might be studying individually, with tutors, or with teachers who may have little experience teaching Chinese to foreigners
Underlying this book are several important assumptions:
It assumes that learners have different needs, interests, and learning strategies, and it is thus designed to accommodate a variety of different approaches to Chinese, especially individual decisions as to how much attention learners initially wish to devote to Chinese characters.
It assumes that people learn any language by first mastering that which is simple and only gradually moving into that which is more complex.
Here's just a tiny fraction of what you'll discover in this Chinese phrasebook:
Exchanging Money
Buying
Drinks and Snacks
In the Cafeteria
The Noodle Stand
In the Restaurant
In the Market
In the Bookstore
Taking the Taxi
On the Train
Asking for Directions
Asking for the Time
Making an Appointment
Introducing Yourself
Talking About Family
Personal Questions
Politely Refusing Requests
Dealing with the Delivery Company
Not Feeling Well
Getting Things Fixed
A Long-distance Phone Call
And much, much more

Описание: Proverbs are an important and characteristic feature of Chinese culture. There is a Chinese proverb for almost any situation, and judicious use of proverbs in Chinese writing is regarded as a sign of good education. Proverbs are often derived from stories or historical events, and offer a multi-dimensional resource for teaching Chinese. This guide, Chinese Proverbs for Mandarin Chinese Classes, offers a collection of proverbs of different types: chéngy? ?? (accepted phrases), yany? ?? (familiar sayings), súy? ?? (popular sayings), and xi?houy? ??? (two-part allegorical sayings). Each proverb is set out with all the materials needed for classroom teaching: a literal translation, the figurative meaning, the story behind the proverb or its source, a vocabulary list, and examples of how the proverb is used in modern Chinese. Illustrations and vocabulary lists are also available online for use in classroom presentations.

What is the best way to learn Chinese? We should remember how we learned our own language when we were children. If we could learn a second language in the same way, it would not seem so difficult.
Think of what a child does; he or she listens to what people say and tries to copy the words. When he or she wants something, they have to ask for it. They are using the language, speaking it, and thinking in it all the time. Thus, if a second language is also used as frequently, it will be learned very quickly.
The main purpose of this book is to provide you with a platform to improve your reading skills and your ability to use Chinese comprehensively so that you can easily read and learn.
In Chinese Short Stories: 11 Simple Stories for Beginners Who Want to Learn Mandarin Chinese in Less Time While Also Having Fun, you will encounter rich and new but not too complex vocabulary, which is translated at the end of the chapter, avoiding the hassle of having to stop the reading rhythm to look up every word in the dictionary. Every paragraph is translated, as well as the summary of the story, thus providing a clearer comprehension of each sentence, while trying to prevent the temptation that the reader might have, if discouraged, of giving up and reading the whole story in English.

In Mandarin Brazil, Ana Paulina Lee explores the centrality of Chinese exclusion to the Brazilian nation-building project, tracing the role of cultural representation in producing racialized national categories. Lee considers depictions of Chineseness in Brazilian popular music, literature, and visual culture, as well as archival documents and Brazilian and Qing dynasty diplomatic correspondence about opening trade and immigration routes between Brazil and China. In so doing, she reveals how Asian racialization helped to shape Brazil's image as a racial democracy.
Mandarin Brazil begins during the second half of the nineteenth century, during the transitional period when enslaved labor became unfree labor--an era when black slavery shifted to "yellow labor" and racial anxieties surged. Lee asks how colonial paradigms of racial labor became a part of Brazil's nation-building project, which prioritized "whitening," a fundamentally white supremacist ideology that intertwined the colonial racial caste system with new immigration labor schemes. By considering why Chinese laborers were excluded from Brazilian nation-building efforts while Japanese migrants were welcomed, Lee interrogates how Chinese and Japanese imperial ambitions and Asian ethnic supremacy reinforced Brazil's whitening project. Mandarin Brazil contributes to a new conversation in Latin American and Asian American cultural studies, one that considers Asian diasporic histories and racial formation across the Americas.
