Описание: Teachers Bridging Difference describes how educators can move out of their comfort zones and practice connecting with others across differences to become culturally responsive teachers. Based on a course developed for preservice teachers, the book illustrates how educators can draw on the visual arts as a resource to explore their own identities and those of their students, and how to increase their understanding of the ways our lives intersect across sociocultural differences.

Drawing on scholarship from multiple disciplines and from her own experience, Marit Dewhurst identifies four stances designed to help educators connect with students in todays multicultural classrooms. To practice these stances, the book introduces eight arts-based activities that can be used by educators in multiple contexts. Ranging from community maps and conversation portraits to scenario comics and reflection zines, the activities are designed to be accessible to even those with little arts experience and can be executed with a wide variety of materials and media.

Unique and timely, Teachers Bridging Difference is an arts-based tool kit for teachers interested in exploring issues of identity and difference as a foundation for creating a more just and equal society.

Описание:

Veteran educator Marjan Glavac's latest book gives new meaning to the concept of the "teachable moment." His collection of personal and inspirational affirmations are guaranteed to connect with anyone who has dedicated their lives to students in a classroom. For every educator who has felt frustrated, unappreciated, and overwhelmed, Teaching Is... reinforces the power of teachers to inspire, motivate, and make a difference. This small book with a big message goes beyond the curriculum, celebrating what true education is all about.

Teaching Is... Moments That Inspire and Motivate Teachers to Make a Difference, was a five year labor of love for Glavac. He captures and offers up the indelible magic moments that teachers experience day in and day out. It seeks to break through the walls of mis-understanding, misguided criticisms, concerns of high pay, teacher performance, accountability, and untold working hours.

Here is a book that lays bare the heart and souls of teachers in their own words, as they describe those defining moments that capture the essence of the reason why they choose and stay in this honored profession.

Teaching Is... is filled with short parables from his own experience. With words and pictures the book highlights the power of teachers to inspire, motivate, and make a difference. Here are some samples:

After telling the class that you grew up without a microwave, a student asks "How did you reheat your food?"(You're tempted to say, "Over the fire ")

Getting a hug from the toughest student in your class on the last dy of school...when no one else is looking.

Telling an elementary student that one day she will become an Olympic athlete...and she does as a member of 2 Olympic teams.

Seeing students leaning forward in their seats, listening to your every word, following your each and every instruction, staring at you intently, mouths and eyes wide open...the AHA moment...something every teacher strives for.

Here is a very special, singularly unique, and beautiful way to learn, appreciate and understand the dedication of teachers and why they devote their lives to making a difference to the lives of the children they touch.

New teachers will be reassured by the personal wisdom of an experienced educator who has walked the path before them; veteran teachers will feel refreshed and invigorated by the unbounded optimism and truthful insight. This book is for every educator at any stage of their career. For parents and students who wish to acknowledge and thank the dedicated teachers who have made an impact with their caring guidance, Teaching Is... is the perfect and lasting gift. Read. Enjoy. And share it with those who have made a difference in your life.

Описание: This book examines the experiences of four Conservatory style trained actors, who go onto complete teacher education programs. In keeping with a/r/tography this research uses social science methods and creative methods of data collection. Interviews and reflective writing about the participant’s educational and experiential backgrounds are complimented by the writing of monologues. Themes from the data collected during interviews, reflective writing and monologues led to the understandings that: there is a connection between developing consciousness and having a noetic experience; actor-teachers want to talk about their noetic experiences; residue is an a/r/tographic rendering used to describe the way that having an illuminating experience in theatre school affected the participants; and an immanent curriculum can be understood by theatrical engagement. In addition to exploring the interview data and monologues, time is spent understanding the works of Antonin Artaud, a prolific theatre artist and a/r/tography, a method of arts-based research. This theoretical and tographical investigation leads to the creation of Interludes. These Interludes, theorized as rhizomatic curricular offshoots, allow for multiple entry points into these new understandings and provide an example of how to bring together artful inquiry into an academic arena. Awards 2013 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Arts Based Educational Research (ABER) Dissertation Honorable Mention 2013 Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CATE) Canadian Association of Teacher Education (CATE) PhD Dissertation Award of Distinction Cick here to find out more information. Dr. Mindy R. Carter is an Assistant Professor at McGill University in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education. She has taught a range of education courses specializing in arts education and curriculum theory. Her research focuses on a/r/tography, teacher identity, teacher education, arts based educational research and curriculum. Her publications have addressed knowledge mobilization, democracy and arts education, the impact of autobiographical and a/r/tographical dispositions on teacher candidates and the impact of creating art on teacher’s pedagogical development and identity. Описание:

Issues of equity remain an essential theme throughout the study and practice of physical education (PE), youth sport and health. This important new book confronts and illuminates issues of equity and difference through the innovative use of narrative method, telling stories of difference that enable students, academics and professionals alike to engage both emotionally and cognitively with the subject.

The book is arranged into three sections. The first provides an overview of current theory and research on difference and inequality in PE, youth sport and health, together with an introduction to narrative forms of knowing. The second section includes short narratives about difference that bring to life the key themes and issues in a range of physical activity contexts. The third section draws upon a selection of narratives to offer detailed, practical suggestions for how they might be used in, or inform, teaching sessions.

This is the first book to explore issues of equity through narrative, and the first to examine the pedagogical value of a narrative approach within PE, youth sport and health. With contributions from many of the world's leading equity specialists, it will be invaluable reading for all students, scholars and professionals working in PE, youth sport, health, sports development, gender studies and mainstream education programmes.
