Описание: In his expansive history of documentary work in the South during the twentieth-century, Scott L. Matthews examines the motivations and methodologies of several pivotal documentarians, including sociologist Howard Odum, photographers Jack Delano and Danny Lyon, and music ethnographer John Cohen. Their work salvaged and celebrated folk cultures threatened by modernization or strived to reveal and reform problems linked to regions racial caste system and exploitative agricultural economy.

Images of alluring primitivism and troubling pathology often blurred together, neutralizing the aims of documentary work carried out in the name of reform during the Progressive era, New Deal, and Civil Rights Movement. Black and white southerners in turn often resisted documentarians attempts to turn their private lives into public symbols. The accumulation of these influential and, occasionally, controversial, documentary images created an enduring, complex, and sometimes self-defeating mythology about the South that persists into the twenty-first century.

Описание: Capturing History: Brief Readings on America from Discovery to 1877 deftly combines primary source documents with historical narrative to give readers an engaging account of early American history. A range of writing styles and methods are featured in 150 small document excerpts on topics ranging from demography to economics, politics to foreign policy. The fifteen chapters begin with writing on the world the Europeans encountered when first discovering and colonizing North America. Subsequent chapters are devoted to England and the 18th Century colonies, the ascendancy of the Federalists, Jeffersonian America, the rise of the Cotton South, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction Era.Designed to show students the kinds of documents historians use to construct a story about the past, while also demonstrating how conceptions regarding history are related to current political, economic, and social debates, Capturing History is well-suited to introductory United States history courses.

Capturing Mariposas: Reading Cultural Schema in Gay Chicano Literature

Описание: Gay Chicano/Latinx literature often holds an intensely personal meaning for its readers, sometimes being the first artistic expression encountered that affirms their own identity as a double minority in a world that is frequently hostile to both. Nevertheless, much of the academic discourse surrounding this body of literature has overlooked how critical audience reaction can be in this inherently political genre, instead seeing the power of a work as resting within the piece itself.

In Capturing Mariposas: Reading Cultural Schema in Gay Chicano Literature, Doug P. Bush looks at the book as only the beginning, considering how this literature has the power to bring understanding to disparate groups, speak truth about repressed sexuality and repressive communities, and recast traditional spaces as ones of inclusion, all through the idea of the cultural schema. Integrating elements of narratology and cognitive studies of literature, the cultural schema speaks to how these authors challenge, reaffirm, and transform commonly held experiences of gay Chicanos--or potentially any audience who reads their works. Focusing on twenty-first-century writers such as Manuel Mu oz, Rigoberto Gonz lez, and Alex Espinoza, Bush examines the cultural schema of their works and then moves toward a more holistic discussion of the publishing and political implications of this genre. In addition to Bush's important scholarship, the book includes extensive interviews with the authors themselves.
