Описание: The fifth and final volume of this series encompasses Robert Treat Paine's time as a justice on the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and covers the final years of his life. Best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Paine spent the remainder of his public career in state service. He concluded his career as attorney general by prosecuting several high-profile cases, most notably the treason trials that followed Shays's Rebellion and a kidnapping case that contributed to the prohibition of the slave trade in Massachusetts. After Paine took a seat on the commonwealth's Supreme Judicial Court in 1790, he issued his most clear statements of political thought in the form of Charges to the Grand Jury. Against the backdrop of nation-building and the French Revolution, Paine deliberated on cases related to many aspects of civil and criminal law, including treason, citizenship, and the Alien and Sedition Acts. Outside of the courtroom, Paine's family life developed as his children grew to adulthood. His relationships with his wife, Sally, and his eight children gain prominence in this volume, especially the turbulent relationship with his second son, Thomas (later renamed Robert Treat Paine Jr., who became a much-lauded poet of the era), and the warm and witty exchanges with his four daughters. Distributed for the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Описание: In eighteenth-century America, information about a woman's life and accomplishments was very difficult to discover, but some woman were avid letter writers or devoted journal keepers, and thankfully some of those letters and journals were saved. These woman include Mary Gray Bidwell, a quiet country woman who had a front row seat on the war and the formation of the new nation. Elizabeth Edwards Burr whose husband founded Princeton University and her son was the second Vice President of the United States (and tried for treason). Lavinia Deane Fisk, widowed during the Revolutionary War, her second marriage triggered a fire storm that led to a revolutionary war in the Congregational Church. The Widow Bingham who fought to live as a man becoming the first woman to have a tavern license, build a business substantial enough to send her son to college and serve on formerly all-male civic committees. Abigail Williams Sergeant Dwight, a Tory: the story of the Royalists during the War is not often told. The war years changed the lives of each of these women and perhaps their lives changed our new country.

Описание: Americans of the Early Republic devoted close attention to the question of what should be the proper relationship between church and state. Kabala examines this debate across six decades and shows that an understanding of this period is not possible without appreciating the key role religion played in the formation of the nation.
