Описание: Walking, Falling is Kelwyn Soles seventh collection of poetry. It extends and deepens themes that emerged in his earlier books: love and human relationships; the exposing of false and cliched perspectives in our socio-political life; and our relationship as South Africans to land and landscape. Whether the theme is the end of a relationship or the murder of immigrants, there is the calm look of analysis, a voice, like a conscience, that threatens to disturb the readers complacency, but a voice simultaneously gentle with empathy and sincerity.--Rustum Kozain, author of Groundwork ***Kelwyn Sole was born in Johannesburg in 1951. He taught for thirty years at the University of Cape Town, retiring in 2016 as Professor and De Beers Chair of English Literature. He has won several awards, in South Africa and internationally, for both his poetry and for his critical work on South African poetry. [Subject: Poetry, African Studies]

Описание:

THE NEW YORK OBSERVER: ONE OF THE TOP 10 BOOKS FOR FALL
It’s no wonder that New York has always been a magnet city for writers. Manhattan is one of the most walkable cities in the world. While many novelists, poets, and essayists have enjoyed long walks in New York, not all of them have had favorable impressions. Addressing an endlessly appealing subject, Walking New York is a study of twelve American writers and several British writers who walked the streets of New York and wrote about their impressions of the city in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
Seen through the eyes of Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, William Dean Howells, Jacob Riis, Henry James, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, James Weldon Johnson, Alfred Kazin, Elizabeth Hardwick, Colson Whitehead, and Teju Cole, almost all the works in Walking New York are about Manhattan, with only Whitman and Kazin writing about Brooklyn. Though the writers were often irritated, disturbed, and occasionally shocked by what they saw on their walks, they were still fascinated by the city William Dean Howells called “splendidly and sordidly commercial” and Cynthia Ozick called “faithfully inconstant, magnetic, man-made, unnatural—the synthetic sublime.”
In this idiosyncratic guidebook to New York, celebrated writers ruminate on questions that are still hotly debated to this day: the pros and cons of capitalism and the impact of immigration. Many imply that New York is a bewildering text that is hard to make sense of. Returning to New York after an absence of two decades, Henry James loathed many things about “bristling” New York, while native New Yorker Walt Whitman both celebrated and criticized “Mannahatta” in his writings.
Combining literary scholarship with urban studies, Walking New York reveals how this crowded, dirty, noisy, and sometimes ugly city gave these “restless analysts” plenty of fodder for their craft.

Описание:

Falling After 9/11 investigates the connections between violence, trauma, and aesthetics by exploring post 9/11 figures of falling in art and literature. From the perspective of trauma theory, Aimee Pozorski provides close readings of figures of falling in such exemplary American texts as Don DeLillo's novel, Falling Man, Diane Seuss's poem, "Falling Man," Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Fr d ric Briegbeder's Windows on the World, and Richard Drew's famous photograph of the man falling from the World Trade Center.

Falling After 9/11 argues that the apparent failure of these texts to register fully the trauma of the day in fact points to a larger problem in the national tradition: the problem of reference-of how to refer to falling-in the 21st century and beyond.

Описание:

Retracing Hogg's remarkable journeys in the 21st century

James Hogg, also known as the Ettrick Shepherd, was a writer, poet, sportsman, musician and larger-than-life personality. In 1802, uneducated and still unknown, he set out on the first of a series of journeys through Scotland, from the Borders to the Highlands and Hebrides. The journeys were inspiring, life-changing and often frightening. They led him to a life of chaos, failures, fame, fun and literary masterpieces.

Now, a descendant follows his footsteps and reflects on his experiences, and on the remarkable rediscovery of Hogg's works a century after his death. It is a story of tenacity, of daring to be different and, against all odds, success and a flourishing legacy. It is a lively look at an extraordinary life and some of his works, including Confessions of a Justified Sinner, considered by many to be one of the greatest novels ever written.

Bruce Gilkison, a New Zealander and a great-great-grandson of Hogg's, walked through Scotland to discover what was special about him and his journeys. Like Hogg, he had no idea where these travels might lead. He found a world of stunning landscapes, fairies and mystery, genius and ambiguity, friendships and back-stabbings, and learnt about his flawed, lovable and eccentric ancestor.

Key Features:

  • Celebrates the extraordinary life of a flawed and lovable character, and provides a brief and accessible study of Hogg's works
  • Examines three Scottish journeys and provides an account of the same trips recreated by one of his great-great-grandsons
  • Provides a guide to parts of Hogg's travels in the Highlands, Western Isles and some other locations, showing how these influenced his career and his writing
  • Demonstrates Hogg's ongoing relevance in the 21st century

Описание: I wrote my first poem when I was in second grade. Okay, maybe it was my second term in second grade, but it amazed my teacher and my principal so much that they asked me to read it to every class in Woodside Elementary School. I was proud. I was embarrassed. I was too scared to do it, so I didnt. It went something like this: Poor me, I got bit by a bee. I told my mommy and daddy, About that bad bee that bit me. It was a very long time ago, and that is about all that I remember of it. Our memories fade with age. Maybe that is a good thing.
